Guidelines are provided to program sponsors for implementing literacy education for older adults. Chapter I provides an overview of the problem of illiterate older adults and literacy education for them. Chapter II addresses the planning of a literacy program for older adults, including special planning concerns, the planning committee, outreach strategies, and program promotion and publicity. Chapter III focuses on direct-service management issues--tutor and peer support recruitment, volunteer training, and older student recruitment. Strategies for success are presented in Chapter IV. They include matching students and tutors, choosing a site, providing support, recognition, and program evaluation. Chapter V provides results of an in-depth study of 27 sites that participated in Project LEEP (Literacy Education for the Elderly). Chapter VI describes LEEP programs in five communities. Chapter VII is an annotated listing of organizations that can be useful to anyone interested in developing literacy programs for older adults. It is divided into sections on training and technical assistance, coordination and support, funding and resource development, and clearinghouse/information and referral. Sample project materials are appended. (YLB)

Book excerpt: Most adult literacy studies tend to focus on learner outcomes, and the few that do include tutors usually focus on their compassion as volunteers and/or assess the effectiveness of tutor training. Since community adult literacy programs are largely dependent on volunteer tutors to provide instruction, tutors come from various backgrounds and are not required to meet a standard of educational training. It should not be taken for granted that tutors are familiar with all of the theoretical approaches in adult literacy instruction, and it is reasonable to assume that different tutors may approach learning situations differently, based on their own underlying assumptions and experiences. This study was conducted to better understand how tutors think about different aspects of their work and why they volunteer for the cause of adult literacy. Findings suggest that most tutors find at least some value in literacy activities representative of the main themes in the literature of the field, and that different subgroups of tutors share preferences for particular types of activities. Findings also indicate that tutors have a sense of universal ethics when they think about fairness in the context of societal organization, view tutoring as a way to express their humanitarian values, and are motivated by the worth they place on literacy in a socially just society.

Book excerpt: This handbook is designed to provide guidance particularly to inexperienced coordinators of adult literacy volunteer tutor programs or to those isolated from support personnel or structures. It is not a curriculum to be followed from beginning to end, but a selection of materials from all states in Australia. Each section contains references and illustrative examples placed throughout the text, together with their sources. Section 1 is an introduction with chapters on how to use the handbook, the place of volunteers in the development of adult literacy and basic education in Australia, and underlying principles. The five chapters in section 2 deal with management of volunteer tutor programs: volunteer tutor programs, program management, management structure models, areas of program management, and program development. Section 3 on working with volunteer tutors contains chapters on the following: policies and practices for volunteers; recruitment, selection, and training of volunteer tutors; tutor training programs; and ongoing training, support, and evaluation. Appendixes are as follows: state volunteer centers around Australia; volunteers' rights and responsibilities; selection and appointment of volunteers; criteria for selecting tutors; tutor application form; names and addresses of professional support agencies; list of bookshops and suppliers of resource materials; annotated list of 32 articles from "Good Practice in Australian Adult Literacy and Basic Education"; and acronyms. Contains a bibliography listing 54 items. (YLB)

Do you want to update and deepen your practice? Yes! Then this is the essential book for you! In this book, the authors offer friendly guidance on how to work with adult learners to develop their literacy skills and practices. They challenge the negative view of adult literacy learners as social 'problems', often described in terms of their deficits. They promote an alternative view of people who have rich resources and skills in many areas of their lives which they can bring to the learning process. The contributing authors have a wealth of experience as practitioners and researchers in the field. They pull together a wide range of current theory and research on adult literacy, offering new perspectives on theory and applications to everyday practice. Key features include: Case studies of real student experiences Samples of learners’ writing with commentary and analysis Application of linguistic theory to literacy teaching Practical suggestions for teaching, planning and assessment Guidance on supporting learners with dyslexia and global learning difficulties Reflective tasks, encouraging readers to develop and apply their knowledge This book is an invaluable resource for trainee teachers studying on literacy specialist courses leading to teaching qualifications, as well as for experienced practitioners wishing to update and deepen their practice.
