Book excerpt: This book is a political history of the island of Malaita in the British Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1927, when the last violent resistance to colonial rule was crushed, to 1953 and the inauguration of the island’s first representative political body, the Malaita Council. At the book’s heart is a political movement known as Maasina Rule, which dominated political affairs in the southeastern Solomons for many years after World War II. The movement’s ideology, kastom, was grounded in the determination that only Malaitans themselves could properly chart their future through application of Malaitan sensibilities and methods, free from British interference. Kastom promoted a radical transformation of Malaitan lives by sweeping social engineering projects and alternative governing and legal structures. When the government tried to suppress Maasina Rule through force, its followers brought colonial administration on the island to a halt for several years through a labor strike and massive civil resistance actions that overflowed government prison camps. David Akin draws on extensive archival and field research to present a practice-based analysis of colonial officers’ interactions with Malaitans in the years leading up to and during Maasina Rule. A primary focus is the place of knowledge in the colonial administration. Many scholars have explored how various regimes deployed “colonial knowledge” of subject populations in Asia and Africa to reorder and rule them. The British imported to the Solomons models for “native administration” based on such an approach, particularly schemes of indirect rule developed in Africa. The concept of “custom” was basic to these schemes and to European understandings of Melanesians, and it was made the lynchpin of government policies that granted limited political roles to local ideas and practices. Officers knew very little about Malaitan cultures, however, and Malaitans seized the opportunity to transform custom into kastom, as the foundation for a new society. The book’s overarching topic is the dangerous road that colonial ignorance paved for policy makers, from young cadets in the field to high officials in distant Fiji and London. Today kastom remains a powerful concept on Malaita, but continued confusion regarding its origins, history, and meanings hampers understandings of contemporary Malaitan politics and of Malaitan people’s ongoing, problematic relations with the state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of grammaticalization raises a number of fundamental theoretical issues pertaining to the relation of langue and parole, creativity and automatic coding, synchrony and diachrony, categoriality and continua, typological characteristics and language-specific forms, etc., and therefore challenges some of the basic tenets of twentieth century linguistics. This two-volume work presents a number of diverse theoretical viewpoints on grammaticalization and gives insights into the genesis, development, and organization of grammatical categories in a number of language world-wide, with particular attention to morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic issues. The papers in Volume I are divided into two sections, the first concerned with general method, and the second with issues of directionality. Those in Volume II are divided into five sections: verbal structure, argument structure, subordination, modality, and multiple paths of grammaticalization.

Book excerpt: The practice of inserting sharp objects into the skin or other body parts for beautification or other purposes is thousands of years old. The oldest mummy discovered in Egypt had a pierced ear. Ancient African civilizations had habits of piercing their lips and tongues. The oldest evidence of facial piercing was discovered in 2020 on the skeleton of a man who lived about 12,000 years ago. Ear piercing has been common throughout history. Often used for spiritual protection, people wore metal on their ears to prevent evil spirits from entering the brain through the ear canal. Ancient African tribes and the Egyptians also practiced body modification through earlobe stretching, as did people in Asia. This practice among royalty is evident on the death mask of the young Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, as well as on statues of the Buddha, where his earlobes reach almost to his shoulders. Nose piercing is probably more than 4000 years old in the Middle East and was often offered as a gift and is still a tradition among some African tribes. In India, nose piercing was done for a completely different reason. The jewel is usually worn in the left nostril of a woman. In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian approach to health and well-being, the spot on the left nostril is associated with the female reproductive organs, and piercing here is believed to facilitate childbirth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than twenty years the standard view among anthropologists has been that Polynesians evolved from a group of settlers known as Lapita people whose characteristically dentate-stamped pottery has been found on numerous mostly Melanesian sites, and who entered Fiji more than 3000 years ago from a starting point in the Bismarck Archipelago. An alternative view that champions Micronesia as a primary area of origin for Polynesians has been in limbo as a result of the prevailing theory, but is reappraised in the present book and found once again to be in contention. The book takes an historical view of theories of origin, and provides some account of methodologies used by scholarly disciplines which have been brought to bear on the subject, including evidence from music and dance, which forms the core of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tattoo Encyclopedia provides the first comprehensive overview of tribal tattooing across history, continents, and ethnicities. Each group, clan, or community that practiced tattooing had its own places where people prepared for tattooing or where tattooing was performed. Tattoo sessions were accompanied by music, songs, or other rituals. They had tattoo artists and their assistants. Of course, they used various tattoo tools to carry and apply the designs. Last but not least, they also used different ingredients to obtain the inks for the tattoos. For all this, the different communities had their own names and terms, in their own language or dialect, and it is these terms, including descriptions, often already lost in history, that this book presents.
