Book excerpt: Havamal, Verse 52: You don't have to give large or expensive gifts away, gifts with sentimental value are best; half a loaf of bread and a horn of ale won me many friendships. Hail to the reader! The Havamal is one of the most sacred texts for modern Scandinavian descendants who wish to learn more about their Norse ancestral philosophy. The literature of the Havamal stayed alive amongst old Scandinavia, due to the fact that all stories were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. The Havamal is a collection of advice and verses believed to have been handed down by Odin to the Norse people. I have attempted my best to translate these ancient words into modern-day English most speakers could understand, while only interpreting the meaning of words into understandable grammar for English. While also not trying to tamper with the practical structure, integrity and flow of the original verses using "wisdom plus proof equals truth".

Book excerpt: Hávamál is presented as a single poem in the Codex Regius, a collection of Old Norse poems from the Viking age. The poem, itself a combination of numerous shorter poems, is largely gnomic, presenting advice for living, proper conduct and wisdom. It is our most important source on Old Norse philosophy. The verses are attributed to Odin; the implicit attribution to Odin facilitated the accretion of various mythological material also dealing with the same deity.

Download or read book The Hávamál written by Cyrus Gorgani and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hávamál, the most sacred and mysterious part of the Elder Edda, was understood as the very Words of Odin, King of the Gods of Asgard, for centuries by the Norse Vikings and earlier Germanic peoples. Across the mists of time, this holy poem of wise advice to mankind, was the inspirations of some of the Germanic world's greatest explorers, warriors and heroes. The noble ethics of the brave Heathen faith of the Vikings are encapsulated in the Hávamál, which remains just as relevant today as when it was first recited by the Skalds. Now it is translated line-for-line, un-altered, uncensored, side-by-side with the original text, in a powerful English edition for Odinists, Asatruars, Heathens, and all those who dare to learn the true meanings of the Words of the High One for themselves. WARNING: This is NOT another ""safe"" or ""politically correct"" academic translation. It is NOT watered-down to please the weak sheep of the ""new age."" This is the raw wisdom of the Gods, sorely needed by mankind. Hail Odin!

Book Synopsis The Havamal - The Sayings of Odin the Wise One by : Anon E Mouse
Download or read book The Havamal - The Sayings of Odin the Wise One written by Anon E Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE existed from very early times a collection of Norse proverbs and wise counsels, which were attributed to Odin (Othin) just as the Biblical proverbs were to Solomon. This collection was known as "The High One's Words," and forms the basis of the present poem. Few gnomic collections in the world's literary history present sounder wisdom more tersely expressed than the Havamal. Like the Book of Proverbs it occasionally rises to lofty heights of poetry. If it presents the worldly wisdom of a violent race, it also shows noble ideals of loyalty, truth, and unfaltering courage. Over time other poems were added to the original content dealing with wisdom which seemed, by their nature, to imply that the speaker was Odin. Thus a catalogue of runes, or charms, was tacked on, and also a set of proverbs. Here and there bits of verse crept in; and of course the loose structure of the poem made it easy for any reciter to insert new stanzas almost at will. This curious miscellany is what we now have as the Havamal Five separate elements are pretty clearly recognizable: (1) the Havamal proper (stanzas 1-80), a collection of proverbs and counsels for the conduct of life; (2) the Loddfafnismol (stanzas 111-138), a collection somewhat similar to the first, but specifically addressed to a certain Loddfafnir; (3) the Ljothatal (stanzas 147-165), a collection of charms; (4) the lovestory of Odin and Billing's daughter (stanzas 96-102); (5) the story of how Odin got the mead of poetry from the maiden Gunnloth (stanzas 103-110). There is also a brief passage (stanzas 139-146) telling how Odin won the runes, this passage being a natural introduction to the Ljothatal, and doubtless brought into the poem for that reason. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To a faithful friend, straight are the roads and short."—Odin, from the Hávamál (c. 1000) Friendship was the most important social bond in Iceland and Norway during the Viking Age and the early Middle Ages. Far more significantly than kinship ties, it defined relations between chieftains, and between chieftains and householders. In Viking Friendship, Jón Viðar Sigurðsson explores the various ways in which friendship tied Icelandic and Norwegian societies together, its role in power struggles and ending conflicts, and how it shaped religious beliefs and practices both before and after the introduction of Christianity. Drawing on a wide range of Icelandic sagas and other sources, Sigurðsson details how loyalties between friends were established and maintained. The key elements of Viking friendship, he shows, were protection and generosity, which was most often expressed through gift giving and feasting. In a society without institutions that could guarantee support and security, these were crucial means of structuring mutual assistance. As a political force, friendship was essential in the decentralized Free State period in Iceland’s history (from its settlement about 800 until it came under Norwegian control in the years 1262–1264) as local chieftains vied for power and peace. In Norway, where authority was more centralized, kings attempted to use friendship to secure the loyalty of their subjects. The strong reciprocal demands of Viking friendship also informed the relationship that individuals had both with the Old Norse gods and, after 1000, with Christianity’s God and saints. Addressing such other aspects as the possibility of friendship between women and the relationship between friendship and kinship, Sigurðsson concludes by tracing the decline of friendship as the fundamental social bond in Iceland as a consequence of Norwegian rule.
Download or read book The Elder Edda written by Andy Orchard and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compiled by an unknown scribe in Iceland around 1270, and based on sources dating back centuries earlier, these mythological and heroic poems tell of gods and mortals from an ancient era: the giant-slaying Thor, the doomed Völsung family, the Hel-ride of Brynhild and the cruelty of Atli the Hun. Eclectic, incomplete and fragmented, these verses nevertheless retain their stark beauty and their power to enthrall, opening a window on to the thoughts, beliefs and hopes of the Vikings and their world.
