Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE existed from very early times a collection of Norse proverbs and wise counsels, which were attributed to Odin (Othin) just as the Biblical proverbs were to Solomon. This collection was known as "The High One's Words," and forms the basis of the present poem. Few gnomic collections in the world's literary history present sounder wisdom more tersely expressed than the Havamal. Like the Book of Proverbs it occasionally rises to lofty heights of poetry. If it presents the worldly wisdom of a violent race, it also shows noble ideals of loyalty, truth, and unfaltering courage. Over time other poems were added to the original content dealing with wisdom which seemed, by their nature, to imply that the speaker was Odin. Thus a catalogue of runes, or charms, was tacked on, and also a set of proverbs. Here and there bits of verse crept in; and of course the loose structure of the poem made it easy for any reciter to insert new stanzas almost at will. This curious miscellany is what we now have as the Havamal Five separate elements are pretty clearly recognizable: (1) the Havamal proper (stanzas 1-80), a collection of proverbs and counsels for the conduct of life; (2) the Loddfafnismol (stanzas 111-138), a collection somewhat similar to the first, but specifically addressed to a certain Loddfafnir; (3) the Ljothatal (stanzas 147-165), a collection of charms; (4) the lovestory of Odin and Billing's daughter (stanzas 96-102); (5) the story of how Odin got the mead of poetry from the maiden Gunnloth (stanzas 103-110). There is also a brief passage (stanzas 139-146) telling how Odin won the runes, this passage being a natural introduction to the Ljothatal, and doubtless brought into the poem for that reason. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Book excerpt: Hávamál, (Old Norse: "Sayings of the High One [Odin]") a heterogeneous collection of 164 stanzas of aphorisms, homely wisdom, counsels, and magic charms that are ascribed to the Norse god Odin. The work contains at least five separate fragments not originally discovered together and constitutes a portion of the Poetic Edda. Most of the poems are believed to have been composed in Norway in the 9th and 10th centuries. The collection begins with poetry concerning rules of social conduct. Of perhaps greater general interest are the myths about Odin's erotic affairs, especially his amorous adventure leading to the theft of the precious mead. In another poem, the VafÞrúðnismál ("Lay of VafÞrúðnir"), Odin engages in a contest of wits with VafÞrúðnir, an immensely wise giant. The poem, in the form of question and answer, tells of the cosmos, gods, giants, the beginning of the world, and its end. The latter part contains the strange myth of how Odin acquired the magical power of the runes (alphabetical characters) by hanging himself from a tree and suffering hunger and thirst for nine nights. The Hávamál ends with a list of magic charms.

Book excerpt: Havamal, Verse 52: You don't have to give large or expensive gifts away, gifts with sentimental value are best; half a loaf of bread and a horn of ale won me many friendships. Hail to the reader! The Havamal is one of the most sacred texts for modern Scandinavian descendants who wish to learn more about their Norse ancestral philosophy. The literature of the Havamal stayed alive amongst old Scandinavia, due to the fact that all stories were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. The Havamal is a collection of advice and verses believed to have been handed down by Odin to the Norse people. I have attempted my best to translate these ancient words into modern-day English most speakers could understand, while only interpreting the meaning of words into understandable grammar for English. While also not trying to tamper with the practical structure, integrity and flow of the original verses using "wisdom plus proof equals truth".

Book excerpt: Havamal is presented as a single poem in the Codex Regius, a collection of Old Norse poems from the Viking age. The poem, itself a combination of numerous shorter poems, is largely gnomic, presenting advice for living, proper conduct, and wisdom. It is considered an important source of Old Norse philosophy. Nowadays, the only source for the Havamal is in the Codex Regius, where there are many Old Norse poems preserved. Even though it came into being thousand years ago, every word from the Havamal never seems to go out of fashion. The reason for this is that they carry the essence of life that is so true that it can last from time to time, passed down from generation to generation, and spread from region to region. Have you ever been out talking with someone and knew there was a perfect Havamal quote for the situation but you just couldn't remember it exactly? Ever been inspired out in nature and felt the urge to read the words of Odin? If so, this book is for you! All the famous quotes are inside. Grab your copy now.

Book excerpt: The Hávamál, the most sacred and mysterious part of the Elder Edda, was understood as the very Words of Odin, King of the Gods of Asgard, for centuries by the Norse Vikings and earlier Germanic peoples. Across the mists of time, this holy poem of wise advice to mankind, was the inspirations of some of the Germanic world's greatest explorers, warriors and heroes. The noble ethics of the brave Heathen faith of the Vikings are encapsulated in the Hávamál, which remains just as relevant today as when it was first recited by the Skalds. Now it is translated line-for-line, un-altered, uncensored, side-by-side with the original text, in a powerful English edition for Odinists, Asatruars, Heathens, and all those who dare to learn the true meanings of the Words of the High One for themselves. WARNING: This is NOT another ""safe"" or ""politically correct"" academic translation. It is NOT watered-down to please the weak sheep of the ""new age."" This is the raw wisdom of the Gods, sorely needed by mankind. Hail Odin!

Book excerpt: The Havamal (Hávamál) ('sayings of the high one' i.e. 'Odin') is a collection of poetry from the Viking age. It can be described as 'gnomic poetry' in that it contains a series of insightful verses which offer advice in the form of maxims and aphorisms (short statements, observations, and opinions) about how to live one's life, how to conduct oneself in a proper manner, and how to gain and use wisdom in order to survive and prosper in a dangerous world. Old Norse is a North Germanic language spoken by inhabitants of Scandinavia from about the 7th to the 15th centuries. The text is presented in its original Old Norse, with a literal word-for-word line-by-line translation, and a Modern English translation, all side-by-side. In this way, it is possible to see and feel how the Old Norse language worked and how it has evolved. Also included is a word list with 1,471 Old Norse words translated in to English, and 1,148 English words translated into Old Norse. This book is designed to be of use and interest to anyone with a passion for the Old Norse or Old Icelandic language, Old Norse history, or languages and history in general. Translated by Matthew Leigh Embleton Matthew Leigh Embleton is a language and history enthusiast, musician, composer, and producer living in London. www.matthewleighembleton.co.uk

Book excerpt: This book is about the Old Norse god Odin. It includes references to all occurrences of Odin in the Old Norse/Icelandic texts, including Saxo’s Gesta Danorum, the eddic poems, Snorri’s Edda, and Ynglinga saga and analyses the high medieval reception and literary representations of Odin rather than the religious character of the god. This is the only existing study of Odin in all the Old Norse/Icelandic texts and applies a contextual method: the different guises of Odin are studied on the basis of the various textual contexts and on their background in the literary and Christian intellectual milieu of the time. Contrary to existing studies, this method is non-reductive in that it does not aim at providing a synthesis about Odin’s original nature on the basis of the differing textual uses of Odin in the Middle Ages. The book argues that the perceived complexity of Odin, often highlighted in research, is first and foremost a function of the complex textual material spanning a wide variety of genres each with its particular literary conventions and of the reception of Odin in early modern and modern mythological studies.

Often dismissed by the King’s court and shunned by their peers, they went a-viking with a small band of loyal followers, or sometimes alone, to seek their fortune and fame in a way that only a Viking would know how. On their return home they were, more often than not, proclaimed as heroes to be honoured by their kings and given their rightful places in the court and the nation.
