Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vagabond's Odyssey: Being Further Reminiscences of a Wandering Sailor-Troubadour in Many Lands My South Sea Island legends and fairy tales have never been told elsewhere. I have written them as nearly as possible in the manner in which they were told me by the Samoan children and natives who were my friends. The mythology of the South Seas is unfortunately becoming almost completely forgotten by the natives, who now live under such different conditions, and seem only interested in the creeds, legends and mythology of the Western world. Book excerpt: Most translations of The Odyssey are in the kind of standard verse form believed typical of high-serious composition in the ancient world. Yet some scholars believe the epic was originally composed in a less formal, phrase-by-phrase prosody. Charles Stein employs the latter approach in this dramatic, and in some ways truer, version. Famous episodes such as the sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Cyclops, are rendered with previously unseen energy and empathy. The poem’s second half—where Odysseus, returned home to take revenge on his wife’s suitors—has extraordinarily subtle, “novelistic” features that are made more transparent in this version. There is also a special feel for the archaic dimensions of Homer—the world of gods and their complex relations to Fate and Being that other translators tend to deemphasize in order to make the poem feel “modern.” Most versions exclude or minimize the magical aspects of the poem, but Stein gives these elements full play, so that the spirit of a universe predating the classical era shines through. This vibrant version of The Odyssey shows readers not only what the Greeks thought about their gods but the gods themselves. Summaries preceding each chapter and a list of recommended websites help expand the experience.

Book excerpt: Traveling, a passion of this author, has prompted me to share my experiences with others, especially senior readers. This group of people, of which I am a part, has not always been privileged to take time out to travel, for various reasons. Granted, it is an expensive venture, or hobby, however, it is great fun, adventurous and a wonderful opportunity to meet people of different cultures and living standards. As creatures of habit, we love to stay put and seldom find interest in leaving home, regardless of the occasion. This book, "The Vagabonds", tells the story of the travels and adventures of a couple, husband and wife, who truly love to travel. It encompasses places here, in the United States of America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada, South America, New Zealand, Australia and many other places, including various islands and villages. This author is confident that this story will capture your attention and imagination. Surely you will be anxious to share it with relatives and friends. Once you've read this book, it will be as though you have taken the venture with us. My mission, and hope, is that more seniors will become interested and venture out on cruises, or other modes of travel, to places they have never trod before. Forget about Disneyland for a while. Be a "Vagabond" at least once in your life. My wife, Frances J., is the cruise mistress. She started me on the cruise circuit instead of land touring. This author sailed for twenty years, while in the U. S. Navy, and thought sea life was over for me. If anything, I should be thankful that my wife loves to sail, because we cruise together, as often as we can, and it is such a relaxing mode of travel. She inspired me to undertake this work, and is my personal editor. Her inspiration is very infectious. It was a success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safroni-Middleton, also known as Count Safroni, (1873-1950) was a British composer, director, violinist, harpist, writer and amateur astronomer. For several of his works he used the pseudonym William H Myddleton. He studied violin with Pablo de Sarasate and afterwards performed as a violinist, playing with orchestras in Sydney, Auckland, Providence (RI), and Tokyo. As a solo performer he toured around Australia, South America, Italy and Spain, and later became bandmaster of the Carl Rosa Opera Company in London. His spirit of adventure led him to explore far-flung places such as Borneo, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia, and he wrote travel guides, memoirs, novels and poems. As a composer he is best remembered for his marches and dance music for the harmony orchestra, and his most well-known piece is Imperial Echoes (1913) which for many years was the theme of Radio Newsreel on BBC radio. This second volume of memoirs published in 1916 and subtitled 'Being Further Reminiscences of a Wandering Sailor-Troubadour in Many Lands' gives an account of his time in the South Sea Islands, New Zealand and West Africa. Illustrated with photographs and facsimiles of sheet music.

Book excerpt: George Kennan (1845-1924) was a pioneering explorer, writer, and lecturer on Russia in the nineteenth century, the author of classic works such as Tent Life in Siberia and Siberia and the Exile System, and great-uncle of George Frost Kennan, the noted historian and diplomat of the Cold War. In 1870, Kennan became the first American to explore the highlands of Dagestan, a remote Muslim region of herders, silversmiths, carpet-weavers, and other craftsmen southeast of Chechnya, only a decade after Russia violently absorbed the region into its empire. He kept detailed journals of his adventures, which today form a small part of his voluminous archive in the Library of Congress. Frith Maier has combined the diaries with selected letters and Kennan’s published articles on the Caucasus to create a vivid narrative of his six-month odyssey. The journals have been organized into three parts. The first covers Kennan’s journey to the Caucasus, a significant feat in itself. The second chronicles his expedition across the main Caucasus Ridge with the Georgian nobleman Prince Jorjadze. In the final part, Kennan circles back through the lands of Chechnya to slip once again into the Dagestan highlands. Kennan’s remarkable curiosity and perception come through in this lively and accessible narrative, as does his humor at the challenges of his travels. In her introduction, Maier discusses Kennan’s illustrious career and his reliability as an observer, while providing background on the Caucasus to help clarify Kennan’s descriptions of daily life, religion, etiquette, customary law, and local government. In an Afterword, she retraces Kennan’s steps to find descendants of Prince Jorjadze and describes her work in coproducing, with filmmaker Christopher Allingham, a documentary inspired by Kennan’s Caucasus journey.

His childhood was spent on the mean streets of 1930s Brooklyn, where he scavenged for junk to sell and borrowed money for books; his first love being Homer's Odyssey. He was 15 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and 17 when he enlisted in the US Navy and embarked on the first great adventure of his life: joining a clandestine unit that helped the Kuomintang fight the Japanese. He served for two years, 96 days in combat and a total of 344 days overseas, which sparked a lifelong passion for travel. Returning home after the war, Freely fell in love with a beautiful girl who sang the blues. His own Penelope. Together they signed a blood pact to spend their life travelling the world. This unforgettable memoir takes the reader from the streets of New York to the corridors of provincial campus life; from World War II in the Pacific to the shores of the Bosphorus and from Ancient Troy to the isles of Dionysus and Ariadne. It is the story of a remarkable odyssey that has spanned nine decades, several continents and one great love. And still the odyssey continues, "as I ponder the meaning of an Ithaka and of exile as an art that takes a lifetime to master. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers coming to the Odyssey for the first time are often dazzled and bewildered by the wealth of material it contains which is seemingly unrelated to the central story: the main plot of Odysseus' return to Ithaca is complicated by myriad secondary narratives related by the poet and his characters, including Odysseus' own fantastic tales of Lotus Eaters, Sirens, and cannibal giants. Although these 'para-narratives' are a source of pleasure and entertainment in their own right, each also has a special relevance to its immediate context, elucidating Odysseus' predicament and also subtly influencing and guiding the audience's reception of the main story. By exploring variations on the basic story-shape, drawing on familiar tales, anecdotes, and mythology, or inserting analogous situations, they create illuminating parallels to the main narrative and prompt specific responses in readers or listeners. This is the case even when details are suppressed or altered, as the audience may still experience the reverberations of the better-known version of the tradition, and it also applies to the characters themselves, who are often provided with a model of action for imitation or avoidance in their immediate contexts.
