Feeling that this was a grand opportunity for a skilful pen upon an interesting subject, and that the requisite talent for the purpose was not lacking in our party, I was reluctant to undertake the work, until sufficient time had elapsed to satisfy me, at least, that unless I took it upon myself it might remain unwritten, and for ever lost, except to the memory of a few of those who, like myself, participated in it. This story, which must of necessity be in the form of a diary of events, is made up largely from private memoranda which were made day after day, with the sole object of refreshing the memory, when relating an account of the journey upon my return home. In rewriting my diary, however, I have made use of all the material I could gather, and from whatever source. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flying Visits to the City of Mexico and the Pacific Coast On the 5th of March 1900 I left New York for a hurried trip to the City of Mexico. The general idea was for me to go to New Orleans and stay for a couple of days, that some American relations should follow and pick me up there, and that we should go on together to the City of Mexico, which is 3200 miles, or five days' journey, distant from New York. After a week in the City of Mexico I was to return via New Orleans, staying there again a couple of days while the rest of the party went to California. The trip was necessarily a very hurried one, but a glimpse is better than no sight at all. The journey from New York to New Orleans by way of Washington, Atlanta, and Montgomery takes about forty hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of a Tour in Mexico and California During a recent excursion with my family in the neighboring Republic of Mexico, in California and other States and Territories of our own country, I made hasty notes from day to day of what I saw, and while these convey an inadequate idea of observations whose accuracy cannot always be depended on, I have yet ventured to think that my friends and acquaintances will not dislike to read what my impressions were, since it may be said, truly perhaps, that if any one will describe with sincerity, however imperfectly it may be done, those things he has himself seen, a certain interest will attach to the performance. With this feeling I have made a little book of these notes, and will ask those to whom I send a copy to regard it as a souvenir of the tour itself and of my cordial memory of themselves as well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Mexico's Standard Guide to the City of Mexico and Vicinity T has been said that throughout the world there is not such a splendid scene as the first View of Mexico City, the capital of the Mexican Republic. Nestling in a valley of surpassing beauty and like a jewel in its setting of silvery lakes and dark-green hills, the belfries and towers of its hundred churches and palaces are mirrored against a sky that baf es all description. It was this sight that inspired the feelings of awe, of wonder and admiration in the bosom of Hernan Cortez, as he stood with his little band of adventurers upon the crest of one of the surrounding hills and looked down upon the capital of the Moctezumas for the first time. Such feelings are common with all tourists as they View Mexico City from any of the surrounding elevations. But it is not the beautiful scene that alone inspires. It is the new sensation that awakens the imagination, that brings into play all the emotions, as the reminiscences come of the mighty con icts that have dyed every foot of the city's soil, of the many people and races who have made it their home. Here are the ruins of a civilization, thousands Of years before history commenced. Here was the home of Moctezuma, and there under the giant trees of Chapultepec, dreamt of the coming of the white god from across the seas. Here the ags of a hundred different' governments have own to the breeze. Here Maximilian raised his imperial standard which brought death to him at the end. All Mexico inspires the same interest, but here in the capital it reaches its climax. The City of Mexico is the object point of all tourists, and naturally so. It is distinctive and individual, and is rapidly becoming modern in every respect. Its streets are wide and handsome, its Paseo dc la Reforma one of the world's most beautiful drives; its hundreds of churches are evidence of the wealth and liberality of the people; its stores compare favorably with those Of Paris or London. It is simply the record of an actual journey to seven or eight Mexican cities and towns, as experienced by two intelligent, wide-awake children, with some one at hand to answer their questions and call their attention to things they might otherwise not have noticed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tour of the 400: To Mexico T o begin with The Tour of the 400 was a holiday and not a sight-seeing trip, therefore let it not be re garded as the writer's end to attempt to compass anything in the nature of a description of Mexico. The writer's inevitable end would be a foregone conclusion were such her intention. Instead this lit tle work is written merely as a souvenir of their jour ney for the and for the possible entertainment of their friends. The foundation of the work was a diary hastily written en route in a system of shorthand all my own, so nearly undecipherable as to pass for Toltecan hieroglyphics. In my translation therefrom I have formulated ideas suggested in the original journal and have filled out in sentences historical or other facts which were briefly noted, retaining as local color many trivial incidents not in themselves worth remem bering, in the hope that they might suggest the environ ments in which they occurred. When I asked permission to print real names, one of the 400 made the Byronic remark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Indian Mexico: A Narrative of Travel and Labor The reading public may well ask, Why another travel book on Mexico? Few countries have been so frequently written up by the traveler. Many books, good, bad, and indifferent, but chiefly bad, have been perpetrated. Most of these books, however, cover the same ground, and ground which has been traversed by many people. Indian Mexico is practically unknown. The only travel-book regarding it, in English, is Lumholtz's "Unknown Mexico." The indians among whom Lumholtz worked lived in northwestern Mexico; those among whom I have studied are in southern Mexico. The only district where his work and mine overlap is the Tarascan area. In fact, then, I write upon an almost unknown and untouched subject. Lumholtz studied life and customs; my study has been the physical type of south Mexican indians. Within the area covered by Lumholtz, the physical characteristics of the tribes have been studied by Hrdlicka. His studies and my own are practically the only investigations within the field. There are two Mexicos. Northern Mexico to the latitude of the capital city is a mestizo country; the indians of pure blood within that area occupy limited and circumscribed regions. Southern Mexico is indian country; there are large regions, where the mestizos not the indians, are the exception. From the time of my first contact with Mexican indians, I was impressed with the notable differences between tribes, and desired to make a serious study of their types.
