Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Principles and Practice of Physio-Medical Surgery: For the Use of Students and Practitioners These considerations form a sufficient apology for the appearance of the present volume. There was something new to offer - something entirely different from the established Opinions and practices of surgeons and of sufficient importance to deserve a careful consideration. The labor of presenting these views was undertaken for the purpose of furnishing a guide to the student and practitioner, at the same time that the practical value of the tenets is respectfully offered for the con sideration of the more erudite in the profession. As no book can supply a surgeon with mechanical skill, the descriptions of the several Operations have been intentionally limited; and as unsettled questions are never helped to a solution by dogmatic pedantry, it has been deemed better and more just to confess a want of light where it was felt than to attempt to establish a theory that had only plausibility to recommend it. The words of other authors have been many times quoted, especially where their clearness and correctness left little to hope for by way of amendment. In all such cases due credit has been given for the selection; and no failure to return honor to whom it was due has been intentionally over looked. Many excellent suggestions have been offered by various friends, especially by Prof. A. Curtis and Dr. Z. Hussey, for which I take pleasure in thus publicly acknowledging my indebtedness - sending forth the volume with a keen sense of its imperfections, but hopefully >intrusting it to the leniency of a generous profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Surgery IT may be considered by many that a book upon Surgery is not at the present time one of the desiderata of the medical profession; and such a remark would, I think, be quite true, if it were intended to apply to a work on the abstract principles of the science. It is not without mature consideration that I have determined upon publishing the present vol. Ume; but I have come to the conclusion, that as its contents are of a practical character, embodying the experience of twenty-five years, dur ing which time I have occupied the position of surgeon to Guy's Hos pita], it would be found useful, not only to the student, but also to those who have entered upon the practice of their profession. It must be borne in mind, that it has not been my intention to write a systematic work on the elements of the science of surgery. These lectures were originally delivered before my hospital pupils; and in thus presenting them to the profession in a collected form, my object has been to furnish a useful compendium of surgery, in which the student may meet with a clear account of the practice of that science, established, not only on my own experience, but likewise upon the best acknowledged authorities. That the practice may not bear in some cases the character of empiricism, I have endeavoured, so far as I have been able to lay down the general principles of science upon which the practice is based at the same time I have avoided as much as possible any discussion of the hypotheses of the time, deeming my practical book an unfit medium for such matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Surgery, Vol. 1 In presenting a new work on Surgery the author has endeavored to bring together the most recent and improved methods of surgical practice, and, with the aid of numerous cross - references, to arrange these ina form readily available to the student and practitioner. As a necessary preliminary to this, the so - called art of surgery, the effort has been made to set forth the fundamental principles underlying what is known as the science of surgery in both an interesting and an instructive manner. The study of inflammation from the surgical viewpoint is based on the tissue changes that follow the infliction of wounds. Contrary to the usual custom the subject of Surgical Bacteriology is introduced in connection with the etiology of inflammation, in which it is an important factor. The grouping of the topics differs somewhat from the arrangement usually employed, as will be seen by reference to the table of contents. It is believed that the study of the subject will? Be facilitated by this method of classification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Surgery: Designed for Students and Practitioners The object of this volume is to present the subject of general surgery in the way best adapted for the uses of the general prao titioner and student. For this reason, consideration of the several branches of special surgery, such as ophthalmology, otology, etc., has been omitted. The large clinical experience of the author and his many years of teaching work have convinced him that there is much need for such a book. At a time when the various Special sub jects in medical science require individual text-books to expound their first principles, it is clearly impracticable to attempt anything like a proper presentation of them within the limits of a volume de voted to general surgery. In every instance the effort has been to present the subject matter from the most practical point of view. Condensation has been used as much as is consistent with clearness and a fair exposition of the subjects by giving special attention to practical points and avoiding long theoretical discussions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Surgery: A Presentation of the Scientific Principles Upon Which the Practice of Modern Surgery Is Based MY associate, Dr. Lewis, and myself have undertaken the translating and editing of this text-book on General Surgery, written by Prof. Erich Lexer, because we believe that it presents the present status of the subject of general surgery in a more thorough and complete way than any other text-book. This work is a presentation of the scientific principles upon which the practice of modern surgery is based. In text-books on surgery in all languages two great divisions of the subject are made, and to these two divisions of the subject various names have been given. In England and America, the terms the Science and Art of Surgery and the Principles and Practice of Surgery have been generally employed. On the Continent, the terms General and Special Surgery are used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Surgery The purpose in writing this book has been to put the funda mental facts before the student and the physician in a simple and logical way, and thereby to lay a foundation upon which an intelligent understanding of the immense details of practical work may be built. While the title of the book is Principles of Surgery, its real Significance would possibly be more correctly expressed by the single word Principles for while the text presents the facts upon which surgical diagnosis and treatment rest, it at the same time covers elemental teachings which as surely concern every other branch of medical practice, especially inasmuch as the majority of surgical cases must come at first into the hands of the practitioner of medicine.
