Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Hydromechanics For the present edition the text has been carefully examined, and various changes and amplifications have been made. Additional illustrative examples have been introduced, and fully worked out, and those proposed for exercise have been rearranged throughout, examples which have been found useless being excluded, and new examples appended to most of the Chapters. In correcting the proof sheets I have received much valuable assistance from Mr E. Hill, Fellow of St John's College, who has kindly examined the whole of them, and has tested many of the examples. I venture to hope that the alterations which have been made, and the care which has been taken to ensure accuracy of results, will render this treatise of increased utility to the mathematical student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydromechanics: An Elementary Treatise, Prepared for the Use of the Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy Even gases offer some resistance to change of shape at a finite rate, but, when in equilibrium, gases, all common liquids, and even such viscous substances as honey and tar, behave like perfect fluids. Hence, although the science of hydromechanics is founded upon the consideration of a purely ideal substance, its hydrostatical results are found to be verified in prae tice, and it is only when fluids in motion are being considered that it becomes necessary to take account of their viscosity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Hydrostatics and Hydrodynamics: For the Use of Students in the University In a Treatise intended for the purposes of Academical instruction it is of the first importance that the more elementary propositions should be laid down, reference being had only to the simplest and most obvious methods of investigation. The attainment of this object has in the following work been found in some degree incompatible with a strictly scientific arrangement of its parts. The discussion of the general equations of Equilibrium evidently forms the legitimate basis of a theory of Hydro-statics. This discussion involves however the consideration of a point in space referred to three rectangular co-ordinates, and is, in its most general form, by no means essential to a further progress in the subject: it has therefore been referred to the end of the work, and that particular case of it in which the accelerating force is gravity, considered alone. In the theory of the motion of fluids, a distinction has been made between the case in which the velocity of every particle is the same as it passes through the same point in space; and the more extended case of variable motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise Relative to the Testing of Water-Wheels and Machinery: With Various Other Matters Pertaining to Hydrodynamics That I know but little about the exact lines necessary for the production of a good turbine is not, perhaps, a legitimate excuse for the absence in this work of directions for turbine building. Because the most minute formulas to be found upon the subject have undoubtedly been published by those who knew still less about it than myself, but such formulas seem to have hindered rather than to have aided turbine improvements, for it is very certain that the best turbine builders have given little heed to such formulas, hence I have not attempted to do what I could not do well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Treatise on Water-Supply Engineering: Relating to the Hydrology, Hydrodynamics, and Practical Construction of Water-Works, in North America, With Numerous Tables and Illustrations There is at present no sanitary subject of more general interest, or attracting more general attention, than that relating to the abundance and wholesomeness of domestic water supplies. Each citizen of a densely populated municipality must of necessity be personally interested in either its physiological or its financial bearing, or in both. Each closely settled town and city must give the subject earnest consideration early in its existence. At the close of the year 1875, fifty of the chief cities of the American Union had provided themselves with public water supplies at an aggregate cost of not less than ninety-five million dollars, and two hundred and fifty lesser cities and towns were also provided with liberal public water supplies at an aggregate cost of not less than fifty-five million dollars. The amount of capital annually invested in newly inaugurated water-works is already a large sum, and is increasing, yet the entire American literature relating to water-supply engineering exists, as yet, almost wholly in reports upon individual works, usually in pamphlet form, and accessible each to but comparatively few of those especially interested in the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Hydraulics Many letters from foreign countries have urged the author to introduce the metric system of measures into the book. To meet this demand, the most important metric data, coefficients, formulas, and problems are given at the end of each chapter, and the student who follows these will have no occasion to transform English measures, but may learn to think in metric units and to use them without hesitation. The hydraulic tables have been gathered together at the end Of the volume, instead of being scattered throughout the text, and it is believed that this plan affords the advantage that a table can be more readily found. The most important tables are presented both in the English and in the metric system, the latter not being a mere transformation Of the former, but being arranged to be used with metric arguments.
