Download or read book Social Identity and the Book of Amos written by Andrew M. King and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, according to the Book of Amos, does it mean to be the people of God? In this book, Andrew M. King employs a Social Identity Approach (SIA), comprised of Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory, to explore the relationship between identity formation and the biblical text. Specifically, he examines the identity-forming strategies embedded in the Book of Amos. King begins by outlining the Social Identity Approach, especially its use in Hebrew Bible scholarship. Turning to the Book of Amos, he analyzes group dynamics and intergroup conflicts (national and interpersonal), as well as Amos's presentation of Israel's history and Israel's future. King provides extensive insight into the rhetorical strategies in Amos that shape the trans-temporal audience's sense of self. To live as the people of God, according to Amos, readers and hearers must adopt norms defined by a proper relationship to God that results in the proper treatment of others.

Book Synopsis Participants in Old Testament Texts and the Translator by : Regt
Download or read book Participants in Old Testament Texts and the Translator written by Regt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Biblical Hebrew texts, individuals and groups are referred to according to specific rules and conventions. How are participants introduced into a text and traced further? When is this done by means of proper names, when by nouns, and when by pronominal elements? In this book, examples from many Biblical passages illustrate the patterns involved. These rules help to solve problems of participant reference in controversial passages. But it is not enough to know who are the participants; one needs to establish why they are referred to the way they are. Main characters in a text are referred to differently from others. Certain devices of participant reference help to indicate paragraph boundaries. Unusual references to participants aim to be noticed and have rhetorical impact. Proper names may occur where one would have expected a pronominal element (or vice versa). Participants may be mentioned in an unexpected order. Special attention is given to such unusual reference devices and the rhetorical strategies involved: climax, suspense and implicit comment. In a translation, these strategies should still be as clear as they are in the source text. So how have reference devices been handled in ancient and modern translations?

Download or read book Hosea, Amos written by Allen R. Guenther and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 1998-04-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allen R. Guenther brings an evangelical believers church perspective to the study of two eighth-century B.C. prophets. He explores theological and practical implications of their message, which he applies to the contemporary church. This work compares Israel’s distinctive religion, influenced by Baal-worshiping Phoenician neighbors, with faith in Judah. In his own marriage, Hosea dramatizes God’s redeeming love. Amos’s exposure of shallow piety and injustice brings him into confrontation with the official priest at Bethel. For both prophets, the Lord’s judgment is to lead on to repentance and restoration.
