Book excerpt: Dante Alighiere is considered one of the great Italian writers and poets of all time. A philosopher who lived in the thirteenth century, he is most well known for his seminal work La Comedia. While one of his lesser known works, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri remains an important piece of writing from one of the Middle Age's most prominent philosophers. Originally written in the early fourteenth century, this work was never fully completed by Dante. Dante wrote in Italian, the language of the common man, which was highly unusual for writers in the Middle Ages. His book was thus accessible to the masses, and as such was focused on many areas of interest to the commoner. The Banquet is divided into four books which mix poetry and prose. The book opens with Dante's explanation of the need for Il Convito and why he opted to write in the vernacular as opposed to Latin. Books two and three are about the loss of his love Beatrice, and his new love for Lady Philosophy. Book three consists of a lengthy poem praising philosophy, while book four, which makes up the majority of this work, is a discussion of true nobility, and includes the longest hymn to appear in all of Il Convito. The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is truly a wonderful read and the work of a master. Even in its translation to English, the power of Dante's ideas transcends the language used to convey them. This book provides a portrait of the man himself, and is an important contextual piece to Dante's entire body of writing. If one is looking for a companion piece to read alongside La Comedia, Il Convito is perhaps the most illuminating of all Dante's work. As a work of philosophy from one of the great thinkers of the Middle Ages, Il Convito: The Banquet of Dante Alighieri is of tremendous importance. This is a must read for anybody remotely interested in philosophy, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri: Translated Line for Line in the Terza Rima of the Original, With Notes In carrying out this undertaking, I have ever kept in mind that the original text is quella materia ond' io son fattoscriba; that thework I had todowasto write itout in another language: as far aspossflale with out adding thereto, diminishing from, or substituting for, it. Difiicultas it is to adhere to this high standard of literal accuracy, I am convinced that it is only by doing sototheutmostofhispowenintheoriginalmetreand in a line for line version, that a translator can hope to produce anything approximating to such a true photo graph of the original as, according to a recent pro nouncement of the Bishop of Ripon, has never yet been taken.' Dante's style is so terse, and his terzine are so interwoven, that in transferring the poem into any other mould we have but the disjecti membra poets. Nine times already, since my birth, the starry heaven of light had returned almost to the self-same point on its revolution, when first appeared to my eyes the glorious lady of my mind, she was by many called Beatrice, not knowing wherefore she was so called. She had been so long in this life, that in her time the starry heavens had moved towards the orient one of the twelfth parts of a degree, so that almost at the beginning of her ninth year she appeared to me, and I beheld her almost at the end of my ninth year. And she appeared to me clad in a most noble colour, a subdued and pure crimson, girded and adorned in a manner befitting her extreme youth. At that moment I say truly that the spirit of life, which dwelleth in the most secret chamber of the heart, began to tremble so violently, that it was painfully perceptible in the smallest pulses; and trembling it spake these words: "Behold a god stronger than I, who coming, shall rule over me." At that moment the animal spirit, that inhabits the high chamber where the sensitive spirits have their perceptions, began to marvel greatly, and speaking more especially to the spirits of the eyes, he said these words: "Your beatitude hath now been manifested to you." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commedia and Canzoniere of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Translation, With Notes Essays and a Biographical Introduction I heard from time to time that others were anticipating me. Versions of the whole or part of the. Commedia in triple rhyme appeared, and met with at least a partial acceptance, by Rev. James Ford (i E. R. Elleby C. Tomlinson (i877), Warburton Pike J. R. Sibbald J. T. Minchin Of these I know little or nothing beyond the fact that I have, within the last few month, transcribed from them, as from all other English versions to which I could gain access, the rendering of the dread inscription of H. 1 - 9. But did I know more, it would, I feel, he at once unbecom ing and unwise to express any opinion on their merits. There can, I believe, he no worse introduction to a translator's work than that he should sit in udgment on the labours of his predecessors. It may be easy to point to this faulty rhyme and that obscure construction, to meanings imperfectly apprehended and special beauties turned into commonplace mediocrities, but then there comes the thought, common alike to Horace and St. Paul, Mutato mine, do is falmla narratur, Thou that judgest doest the same things. I have no doubt that each of these versions has, like my own, its special merits and defects. I hope and believe that each of the translators has found in his work, as I have found in mine, its own best reward. Each, perhaps, has had the added comfort of a small select circle of sym pathising friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
