Book excerpt: Do individuals’ perceptions of their relative economic status affect their attitudes regarding gender roles in patriarchal societies? What role does hearing messages designed to increase support for women’s empowerment play in moderating these effects? Leveraging an original survey experiment in Nepal, we find that a prime conferring feelings of relative deprivation causes women to revert to traditional views of gender in economic decision-making; they become less supportive of women having equal control over household income, sharing house hold chores with men, and working outside the home. Women’s empowerment messaging does not attenuate these effects. Priming men to feel relatively deprived causes declines in gender equitable economic and political views, but women’s empowerment messaging nullifies these effects. The results suggest that among populations feeling relatively deprived, regressive gender norms may take hold. However, light-touch efforts to spur support for women’s empowerment may counter some reversion to traditional views of gender.

This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional notions of security are premised on the primacy of state security. In relation to energy security, traditional policy thinking has focused on ensuring supply without much emphasis on socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Non-traditional security (NTS) scholars argue that threats to human security have become increasingly prominent since the end of the Cold War, and that it is thus critical to adopt a holistic and multidisciplinary approach in addressing rising energy needs. This volume represents the perspectives of scholars from across Asia, looking at diverse aspects of energy security through a non-traditional security lens. The issues covered include environmental and socioeconomic impacts, the role of the market, the role of civil society, energy sustainability and policy trends in the ASEAN region.

This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are proud to present to our readers Czech Yearbook of International Law 2012, Volume 3. The overarching topic of this volume, Public Policy and Ordre Public turns its focus to the doctrine which is inherently connected with private international law, which is true only at first glance. The problem of Public Policy and Ordre Public is intertwined more deeply in the national legal orders than virtually any legal branch. However, the platform of private international law through which these doctrines emerge and find its strongest application is in the cross-border traffic of the court and extra-court decisions. In these relationships, the most important differences in understanding the extent and nature of these terms take shape. The third volume of the Czech Yearbook of International Law focuses on the uncovering of national differences and the comparison of such doctrines in a global perspective. CYIL 2012 takes into account the completely different connotations given to both doctrines in the United States and the Common Law countries in continental Europe. Book excerpt: This classic text offers a broader intellectual foundation than traditional principles textbooks. It introduces students to both traditional economic views and their progressive critique. Revised, expanded, and updated for this new edition, the text puts the study of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and globalization in their historical context. While covering the same topics as a traditional text, it also offers a richer discussion of economic history and the history of economic thought, including the ideas of Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, and John Maynard Keynes. This allows students to see economics as a way of understanding the world - as a lens for social analysis - rather than, as immutable truth or ideal to which the world should be molded. This completely revised edition incorporates new chapters on microeconomics and macroeconomics, as well as more graphs to enhance the theoretical presentations. Unlike the previous editions, it includes many pedagogical tools to encourage student participation and learning. Each of the 56 chapters opens with Learning Objectives, and key terms appear in boldface within the text and are listed at the end of each chapter. Other end-of-chapter material includes Summary of Major Points, Analytical Questions, and References. An online Instructor's Manual is available to professors who adopt the text.

Book excerpt: Alternative approaches have emerged which have radically altered our understanding of Tennyson's poetry and his relationship to the Victorian age. This text covers the most significant areas of new work on Tennyson, effectively linking feminist and gender studies with deconstructive, psychoanalytic and linguistic attention. The Introduction discusses ways in which orthodox critical approaches have dominated readings of Tennyson's poetry and provides a critical overview of the radical reappraisal of his work. It also provides a guide to the varied ways in which these new debates have shaped and are shaping themselves, with a final discussion of the future directions which Tennyson criticism is likely to take. The essays chosen cover and reflect a range of modes of critical enquiry compelling in themselves.
