The model matches hydraulic, thermal, tracer, and water loss data during a 30-day flow test. Wellbores were placed in the finite element mesh at their relative positions. The data match to this flow test was used to make long-term simulations, and to predict the effect on reservoir performance of redrilling the damaged production wellbore. Increasing the length of producing interval by drilling was found to significantly improve reservoir power production and the temperature of produced fluids, while increasing the wellbore separation distance was found to result in only small improvements.

Book excerpt: A model for heat transfer in a Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal reservoir is developed which predicts produced fluid thermal performance based on the tracer-determined residence time distribution and an estimated value of fracture porosity. The tracer response is modeled as flow through several paths of highly fractured rock. Fracture porosity is used to convert fluid volumes to rock volumes, which is necessary to model the heat sweep. The produced fluid response is the mixing cup average of the individual path temperatures. The model adequately represents the measured thermal response of an HDR reservoir operated at the Fenton Hill NM HDR geothermal site in the late 1970's. Application to the current Fenton Hill reservoir predicts a rapid initial thermal drawdown of about 50°C, followed by a very slow thermal decline thereafter. The model is most sensitive to fracture porosity, and less so to the flow path geometry used to match the tracer response.

Book excerpt: Fluids play an important role in environmental systems appearing as surface water in rivers, lakes, and coastal regions or in the subsurface as well as in the atmosphere. Mechanics of environmental fluids is concerned with fluid motion, associated mass and heat transport as well as deformation processes in subsurface systems. In this reference work the fundamental modelling approaches based on continuum mechanics for fluids in the environment are described, including porous media and turbulence. Numerical methods for solving the process governing equations as well as its object-oriented computer implementation are discussed and illustrated with examples. Finally, the application of computer models in civil and environmental engineering is demonstrated.

Book excerpt: Mining the Earth's Heat: Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy describes the work carried out by the Los Alamos National Laboratory to turn an idealistic concept - that of drawing useful amounts of energy from the vast underground store of hot rock at reachable depths - into a practical reality. This book provides comprehensive documentation of the over two decades of experiments carried out at the test site at Fenton Hill, New Mexico, where the feasibility of accessing and extracting this vast natural resource was finally demonstrated. It also discusses the numerous technical, administrative, and financial hurdles that had to be overcome along the way. This publication will no doubt prove invaluable to researchers around the world as they strive to move this now-proven technology toward commercial viability. In addition, it is a valuable source of relevant information for anyone interested in the world energy outlook for the 21st century and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A closed-loop circulation test was conducted from 10 May to 14 July 1995 on the Hot Dry Rock (HDR) reservoir at Fenton Hill, New Mexico after a hiatus of nearly two years. Changes in heat transfer and reservoir volume were investigated and compared to previous circulation tests. Chemical tracers can be used to measure the volume of flow paths in hydrologic systems. Usually, tracers are used in low temperature situations, but the application to high temperature systems has been established for certain tracer compounds. During the 1995 flow testing at Fenton Hill, both a conservative and a non conservative tracer were injected into the reservoir in each of two separate experiments. The purpose was to determine the volume of the most direct flow paths and to estimate the total volume of fractures in the system. The results indicate a relatively static reservoir volume between June and July, yet with an increase in flow dispersion. It can be assumed that channeling of flow did not occur in the main body of the reservoir due to continuous operation. However, a new flow path adjacent to the injection well did develop, and its affect on reservoir flow was investigated using tracer technology. The tracer data collected during that period shows that there is a minor contribution of flow from a previously under-developed region of the HDR reservoir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete fracture and continuum models are being developed to simulate Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal reservoirs. The discrete fracture model is a two-dimensional steady state simulator of fluid flow and tracer transport in a fracture network which is generated from assumed statistical properties of the fractures. The model's strength lies in its ability to compute the steady state pressure drop and tracer response in a realistic network of interconnected fractures. The continuum approach models fracture behavior by treating permeability and porosity as functions of temperature and effective stress. With this model it is practical to model transient behavior as well as the coupled processes of fluid flow, heat transfer, and stress effects in a three-dimensional system. The model capabilities being developed will also have applications in conventional geothermal systems undergoing reinjection and in fractured geothermal reservoirs in general.

This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates of thermal drawdown in Hot Dry Rock geothermal systems have been made with two different models of heat transfer from hydraulically fractured reservoir rock blocks to water circulated through the fracture permeability. One model is based on deconvolution of experimental tracer response curves into a network of flowpaths connected in parallel with heat transfer calculated individually in each flowpath. The second model is based on one-dimensional flow through the rock with a block size distribution described as a group of equivalent-radius spheres for which the heat transfer equations can be solved analytically. The two models were applied to the planned Phase II long-term thermal drawdown experiment at Fenton Hill, NM. The results show good agreement between the two models, with estimates of temperature cooldown from 240oC to 150oC in a few years depending on selected operation parameters, but with somewhat differing cooldown curve characteristic shapes. Data from the long-term experiment will be helpful in improving the two models.
