Book excerpt: Metallographic techniques which have been used in previous work to study how fatigue damage develops in fatigue specimens subjected to cyclic strain at constant amplitude are extended to study of damage produced when cyclic strain is commenced in one range of amplitudes and continued in another. Reactions particularly studied have been those between what have been termed the H or large-amplitude range and the F or smallamplitude range as found in Fcc metal. It is shown how the type of damage produced by combination of H and F amplitudes differs from that which would be produced by either amplitude alone and depends upon the order in which they are applied. Damage is especially drastic if H cycles follow a sequence of F cycles which have established slip-zone fissures and on the basis of the observations suggestions are made on how this particular consequence may be avoided. Book excerpt: A theory of cumulative damage is presented which is quantitative and is capable of explaining the effect of stress magnitude and is sensitive to the order of application of stress. The theory is based on a model of fatigue obtained from the elasto-plastic theory of cracks and on concepts from the dislocation theory of metals. The fundamental idea involved in the theory is the estimation of the length of a dominant crack that is presumed to grow during progressive fatigue whether due to a single stress or multiple stress loading. By referring all damage to the growth of this crack it is found possible to treat the cumulative damage as a logical extension of the engineering theory of fatigue without making any other arbitrary assumptions. Applications of the theory to multi-step loading, program-type loading, sequential random loading, and completely random loading have been discussed in a quantitative manner. Aspects of extension of the theory to acoustic fatigue and some implicit limitations of the theory are also briefly discussed. The basic information necessary for the quantitative application of the theory is a statistically well defined stress versus number of cycles curve of fatigue. If this information is given, most of the aspects of cumulative damage can be predicted quantitatively. Comparison of the predicted results with the statistically reliable test results indicate the correlation to be excellent, the difference between the predicted fatigue lives from the theory and experiment being well within ten percent.

Book excerpt: A cumulative fatigue damage procedure for estimating the fatigue crack initiation life of notched structural members subjected to known load histories is outlined. This procedure assumes that a knowledge of the local cyclic stress-strain response of the metal at the most severely strained region in a member is sufficient to predict when a crack will form there. Some of the steps in this procedure that are of current interest and which are especially applicable to a local stress-strain approach are discussed. Alternative, approximate and/or abbreviated steps in the cumulative fatigue damage procedure are given wherever possible. Limitations of the method and areas where research is needed are pointed out. Cumulative fatigue test results for smooth specimens, notched plates and built-up box beams are compared to life calculations made using the local stress-strain approach. Cyclic deformation and fracture properties, used in the analysis, were obtained from tests on a limited number of axially loaded unnotched specimens. These examples indicate that a cumulative fatigue damage analysis based on the local stress-strain approach employing a minimum amount of materials test data can be used to make reasonable life estimates for members similar to many practical structural members.
