Book excerpt: Since its first appearance in 1950, Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines has served seagoing engineers, students of the Certificates of Competency examinations and the marine engineering industry throughout the world. Each new edition has noted the changes in engine design and the influence of new technology and economic needs on the marine diesel engine. This eighth edition retains the directness of approach and attention to essential detail that characterized its predecessors. There are new chapters on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation. Important developments such as the latest diesel-electric LNG carriers that will soon be in operation. After experience as a seagoing engineer with the British India Steam Navigation Company, Doug Woodyard held editorial positions with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Marine Engineers. He subsequently edited The Motor Ship journal for eight years before becoming a freelance editor specializing in shipping, shipbuilding and marine engineering. He is currently technical editor of Seatrade, a contributing editor to Speed at Sea, Shipping World and Shipbuilder and a technical press consultant to Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine. * Designed to reflect the recent changes to SQA/Marine and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency exams. Careful organisation of the new edition enables readers to access the information they require * Brand new chapters focus on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation * High quality, clearly labelled illustrations and figures

Book excerpt: Nigel Calder, a diesel mechanic for more than 25 years, is also a boatbuilder, cabinetmaker, and machinist. He and his wife built their own cruising sailboat, Nada, a project they completed in 1984. Calder is author of numerous articles for Yachting Monthly and many other magazines worldwide, as well as the bestselling Boatowner's Practical and Technical Cruising Manual and Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, both published by Adlard Coles Nautical. Here, in this goldmine of a book, is everything the reader needs to keep their diesel engine running cleanly and efficiently. It explains how diesel engines work, defines new terms, and lifts the veil of mystery that surrounds such engines. Clear and logical, this extensively illustrated guide will enable the reader to be their own diesel mechanic. As Nigel Calder says: 'there is no reason for a boatowner not to have a troublefree relationship with a diesel engine. All one needs is to set the engine up correctly in the first place, to pay attention to routine maintenance, to have the knowledge to spot early warning signs of impending trouble, and to have the ability to correct small ones before they become large ones.'

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book on Marine Motors: Being a Description of Most of the Leading Types of Various Marine Motors as Now Manufactured Practically all the oils that we use for these engines are derived from Petroleum or Rock Oil, which, like coal, is found ready made for us by nature, in a great many countries of the world; our chief supply comes from America and Russia. This petroleum consists of a great many different substances all mixed together, and the first thing the manufacturer does is to fractionally distil it, that is to say, by gradually warming it; first of all the light volatile oils pass off as vapour, and are condensed into suitable receptacles. On an average, American Petroleum contains about 16 per cent. Of these oils, whilst Russian Petroleum only gives 4 per cent. As the heat of distillation is gradually increased, the next substance to come away is what the Americans call kerosine and we here paraffin, that is the oil we use in our ordinary household lamps. American Petroleum gives about 50 per cent. Of this oil, whilst Russian only gives 27 per cent. As the heat of distillation is further increased, the heavy lubricating oils that we use for the cylinders of gas and oil engines, vaseline, and paraffin wax, &c., gradually come away and are separately stored for use. The light oils are now again distilled, and ultimately what we use here for engines, and known as Pratt's Motor Spirit or Petrol, is obtained and sent over here in air-tight tins. These contain two gallons and are sold at an average price of per gallon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The diesel engine is by far the most popular powerplant for boats of all sizes, both power and sail. With the right care and maintenance it is twice as reliable as the petrol engine as it has no electrical ignition system, which in the marine environment can suffer from the effects of damp surroundings. Self-sufficiency at sea and the ability to solve minor engine problems without having to alert the lifeboat is an essential part of good seamanship. Marine Diesel Engines, explains through diagrams and stage-by-stage photographs everything a boat owner needs to know to keep their boat's engine in good order; how to rectify simple faults and how to save a great deal of money on annual service charges. Unlike a workshop manual that explains no more than how to perform certain tasks, this book offers a detailed, step-by-step guide to essential maintenance procedures whilst explaining exactly why each job is required.

Since publication of the last edition in 2009, a number of emission control areas (ECAs) have been established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in which exhaust emissions are subject to even more stringent controls. In addition, there are now rules that affect new ships and their emission of CO2 measured as a product of cargo carried. Provides the latest emission control technologies, such as SCR and water scrubbers Contains complete updates of legislation and pollutant emission procedures Includes the latest emission control technologies and expands upon remote monitoring and control of engines

It reviews the development of modern four-stroke marine engines, gas and gas–diesel engines and low-speed two-stroke crosshead engines, describing their application areas and providing readers with a useful snapshot of their technical features, e.g. their dimensions, weights, cylinder arrangements, cylinder capabilities, rotation speeds, and exhaust gas temperatures. For each marine engine, information is provided on the manufacturer, historical background, development and technical characteristics of the manufacturer’s most popular models, and detailed drawings of the engine, depicting its main design features. This book offers a unique, self-contained reference guide for engineers and professionals involved in shipbuilding. At the same time, it is intended to support students at maritime academies and university students in naval architecture/marine engineering with their design projects at both master and graduate levels, thus filling an important gap in the literature.

Book excerpt: This third, revised edition of Stan Grayson's classic history and appreciation of early gasoline marine engines contains several new appendixes, and an expanded list of U.S. and Canadian marine-engine builders -- 750 of them. Among several new chapters, there is a discussion of engine collecting and use that includes tips on propellers and matching engines and boats. This book is much more than lists and nuts and bolts, however. It is fascinating social history, an astute study of how these machines were created, tinkered with, used, cursed, and most recently collected -- and how they changed the small-boat world at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: This densely illustrated, hands-on guide to diesel engine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair renders its subject more user-friendly than ever before. Finally, boatowners who grew up with gas engines can set aside their fears about tinkering with diesels, which are safer and increasingly more prevalent. As in other volumes in the International Marine Sailboat Library, every step of every procedure is illustrated, so that users can work from the illustrations alone. The troubleshooting charts in the second chapter--probably the most comprehensive ever published--are followed by system-specific chapters, allowing readers to quickly diagnose problems, then turn to the chapter with solutions. Diesel engine systems covered include: mechanical; oil; fresh- and raw-water cooling; low- and high-pressure fuel; exhaust; starting; charging; transmission and stern gear.
