The theoretical model is based on implicit finite-difference integration of the governing three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer equations in conjunction with a three-dimensional scalar eddy-viscosity model of turbulence. Comparison is made of present theory with detailed experimental measurements of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer structure (velocity and temperature profiles), the surface streamline direction (obtained via an oil-flow technique) and surface heat-transfer rate.

Book excerpt: Velocity profiles were obtained from pitot-pressure and total-temperature measurements within a turbulent boundary layer on a large sharp-edged flat plate. Momentum-thickness Reynolds number ranged from 2590 to 8860 and wall-to-adiabatic-wall temperature ratios ranged from 0.3 to 0.5. Measurements were made both with and without boundary layer trips. Five methods are evaluated for correlating the measured velocity profiles with the incompressible law-of-the-wall and the velocity defect law. The mixing-length generalization of Van Driest gives the best correlation.

Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.
