Book excerpt: This study examines the weak-form efficiency of the Dubai Mercantile Exchange (DME) by way of empirically testing for the profitability of technical trading strategies on the price series of the Oman Crude Oil Futures Contract (OQD) from 2008 - 2014. The scholarly interests of this study is twofold: For one, it derives its practical relevance from the need for a well functioning crude benchmark on which crude exports from the Middle East to East Asia can be priced on. Secondly, this study contributes to the existing literature as it is the first study to employ technical trading strategies as a way to test the EMH on the Dubai Mercantile Exchange. The empirical examination includes parameter optimisation, in-sample and out-of-sample testing, risk-adjusted performance measures and tests on statistical significance. Overall, the analysis obtains mixed results, which do not allow for the definitive conclusion that the OQD futures market was weak-form inefficient during the examined time period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to evaluate different trading strategies in the crude oil market. WTI crude oil futures contracts from 1989 to 2015 are analyzed and compared to a benchmark, which is always invested in the first in line contract. The analysis includes technical trading, long-only and long-short strategies, which are based on ideas from the literature as well as findings within this thesis. The performance of the tested strategies is evaluated on an absolute US Dollar basis. In order to understand the riskiness of the strategy, the standard deviation of daily profits and losses as well as the 5% expected shortfall are computed. Furthermore, using an adjusted Sharpe ratio, the different strategies are also compared in terms of the risk-return characteristics. Overall, results indicate that the 2 long-short strategies, namely the Regime Changing Strategy as well as the Carry Based Trading Strategy, lead to significant better risk-return results than the Benchmark Strategy. In addition, also the Dow Theory Based Strategy shows impressive results in terms of profitability. In-sample optimized moving average strategies perform well, however out-of-sample testing shows that the performance heavily depends on the chosen parameters.

Book excerpt: The sultanate’s economy continues to enjoy the benefits of petroleum wealth, which has provided budget surpluses in most years and served as a backbone for growth. However, planning is well under way for an era in which oil will not be the main economic driver, with the twin goals of diversification and creating an increased number of private sector jobs at the top of the government’s current agenda. Indeed, in recent years, the non-OPEC oil exporter’s economy has been undergoing a steady transformation, reorienting from oil toward a more diverse set of service and industry-based economic activities. So far, progress has been promising. In 2011 oil and gas accounted for 38.8% of GDP. With the continuation of higher-than-expected energy prices in 2012, the government has increased economic investments accordingly. These investments, which include infrastructure, social programmes and small-business development, are aimed toward better preparing the country for its post-fossil fuel future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2007, an extraordinary meeting took place in London's The Exchange Forum. Chief executives from many of the world's most important financial exchanges came together with senior executives from a wide array of global banking, trading, and investing firms, index providers, regulators, system suppliers, and key academics to discuss the rapidly changing business and technological environment in which exchanges function. The forum was an exclusive event, open only to the most senior-level individuals in the global exchanges community: those who run exchanges, who are clients of exchanges, who invest in exchanges, and who supply goods and services to exchanges. In presentations and panel discussions over two days, these experts explored the effect of shrinking margins as more instruments became exchange traded rather than OTC and the conflicts that creates. They shared what exchanges are doing today to respond to the challenges wrought by competition, globalization, and rapid technology advances. And they looked into the future and discussed the multi-asset, multi-currency, and multi-region trading that holds out the promise of future success. The book is based on the discussion and analysis that took place at this exclusive event that brought together leading exchange professionals, their customers, and suppliers from around the globe to share insights and experiences. It will provide an overview of the latest technological, regulatory, and market developments in the exchange industry and the common problems exchanges face; explain how these problems are being addressed; and present the consensus view from leading exchange professionals about how to move forward. Most significant, the ideas in the book will come directly from the worlds leading exchange professionals and customers. Hear the voices of executive-level exchange professionals throughout the book for a candid, realistic, and high-level analysis of the exchange business, its present and future Share the stories of success and failure these exchange executives shared as they discussed solutions to common challenges Chart the way forward for your exchange business with confidence based on the collective insights and experience of these professionals
