Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a complete synopsis of the millipede fauna of Asian Russia, the vast Palaearctic area extending from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific coast and adjacent islands in the east. The fauna, which has no fewer than 103 species, 39 genera, 17 families, and five orders, is reviewed and summarised. A historical account, a review of the morphology and ecology of the millipedes in the region, and zoogeographical notes are provided. Illustrated descriptions and diagnoses of, as well as keys to, all main millipede taxa recorded in the Asian part of Russia are included. In addition, all available data on the taxonomy and distribution of the regions Diplopoda are summarised. Dr E. V. Mikhaljova works at the Institute of Biology and Soil Science, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok, Russia. The book reflects her lifetime experience with the systematics, biology, ecology and distribution of Asian Diplopoda. Despite certain inavoidable lacunae, this work allows the millipede faunas of Siberia and the Russian Far East to be ranked among the best known in the world, let alone Asia.

R. Bergholz and published by Pensoft Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The periodic flood pulse of the Amazon River has been the main controlling factor in the local ecosystems for at least two million years. Numerous adaptations, in some cases along with speciation, have evolved in local terrestrial invertebrates. The small millipede Poratia obliterata (Kraus, 1960), which probably originates from the Andes, is currently known from a remarkably broad range of Central Amazonian biotopes, i.e. various seasonal inundation forests, upland forest and plantations. Like most native millipedes, P. obliterata appears to escape flooding by tree ascents. Such developed survival strategies adaptive to annual inundation can either reflect ecological plasticity or implicate ecological speciation, .i.e. 'biotope-specific races' or ecotypes. To assess the causal mode of adaptation, ecological studies with genetic analyses are combined in this work. Comparing the distribution, biotope range, population subdivision and genetic diversity of different millipedes, the species P. obliterata appears to feature a generalist strategy. and widespread species, which seems to cope well with various biotopes and thus successfully invaded seasonal inundation forests. The book is addressed to specialists in evolution, ecological genetics, ecology and conservation of wetlands, millipede research and conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Synopsis of Biology, Second Edition presents a critical review of general topics in the field of biology. This book is organized into eight sections encompassing 164 chapters that discuss the form and structure of living and non-living, as well as the physiology of organism and the environment. Considerable sections are devoted to the anatomy and physiology of the reptile, bird, mammal, and humans; study of the inorganic environment; evolution and heredity of the species; systematic classification of plants; production and cultivation of plant products; preservation, breeding, and cultures of organisms; and definition of epiphytes and climbers. Other sections deal with the dynamics and structure of inorganic compounds and the molecular structure and mode of action of drugs. The analysis of the natural system and the theory of evolution are presented. The remaining sections discuss the distribution of floras and faunas in space. These chapters also focus on the dermal excretion and thermo-regulation. The book can provide useful information to biologists, students, and researchers.

This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myriapods are the only major zoological group for which a modern encyclopedic treatment has never been produced. In particular, this was the single major gap in the largest zoological treatise of the XIX century (Grassé’s Traité de Zoologie), whose publication has recently been stopped. The two volumes of “The Myriapoda” fill that gap with an updated treatment in the English language. Volume II deals with the Diplopoda or millipedes. As in the previous volume, the treatment is articulated in chapters dealing with external and internal morphology, physiology, reproduction, development, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and taxonomy. All currently recognized suprageneric taxa and a very large selection of the genera are considered. All groups and features are extensively illustrated by line drawings and micrographs and living specimens of representative species of the main groups are presented in color photographs.
