Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of the History of Education The present volume is the outgrowth of several years' experience in the use of the syllabus method in teaching the history of education. The syllabi were originally prepared in a somewhat elaborate form for use in graduate classes at Yale University. The teaching method used in the course at. Yale combined extensive library reading with lectures. Subsequently the syllabi were revised and to some degree abridged for my classes in the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers, where they have been of service in directing and organizing the students' reading. They are now published in the belief that they will fill a wider field of usefulness in normal school and college classes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Lectures on the History of Education: With Selected Bibliographies and Suggested Readings This book is a revision of a Syllabus of Lectures used during the past three years with a class in the History of Education. In revising it for printing I have made such changes in arrangement and such additions and omissions as an experience of three years has seemed to indicate as desirable. It is hoped that in this new form the Syllabus and appended bibliographies will prove useful as a practical guide to teachers, librarians, and individual students. The Syllabus 1s based on a combination of the lecture and library methods, with occasional class discussions and reports. Instead of confining students to a few text-books, the aim has been to give them breadth of view by familiarizing them with the literature of the subject, and to provide some training in methods of independent work. An attempt has been made to study the history of education as a phase of the history of civilization. Accordingly a close connection has been maintained between the history of the civilization of a people and the ideas on and progress of education among them. Significant political events, changes in religious ideas, the attitude of the leaders toward the great problems, the progress of scientific discovery and invention, and the rise and progress of the scientific method and national spirit have been considered as a back-ground for the study of the history of educational theories and practice. An attempt has also been made to separate what was mere theory from what was actual practice, what was particular or local from what was general; to give some coherence to that confusing period between the Protestant Revolt and the nineteenth century; to set the work of the theorists and the reformers in a proper relation to one another and to the times in which they lived, and to point out how far they have influenced the present; and finally, to sketch the great organizing movements of the nineteenth century, taking Germany, France, and England as types. Only the slightest outline of the history of education in America is given; just enough to show the relation of the European development to our own, this subject being dealt with in another course. Book excerpt: In clear, concise language, this book deals with fundamental issues that must be addressed if teachers are to construct coherent and powerful history curricula, including: What are the purposes and goals that different types of teachers establish for their history teaching?, and What do children know and think about history, and what are the teaching implications for our schools? This book represents a major advance in developing a knowledge base about children’s historical learning and thinking that applies to history teaching some of the principles involved in teaching for understanding and conceptual change teaching, methods that have been so successful in other school subjects.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Textbook in the History of Education Some years ago I prepared a syllabus in the history of education for the use of my undergraduate classes in the College of the City of New York and in an extension course offered to teachers in the city. This volume is the result of a suggestion on the part of those pupils that the syllabus be expanded into a textbook. It is written primarily as a teaching instrument, for students who are preparing to teach or who have a cultural interest in the subject but who are unable at the time to undertake a deeper or more detailed study than the survey here presented. Certain characteristics which have been kept in view ought, perhaps, to be mentioned. 1. It is intended to be of practical assistance to the teacher in giving him a better understanding of present-day problems in education. Unless the history of education throws light upon the educational principles and practices of today, it has only an academic interest and should not be a prescribed subject in the training of a teacher. A series of questions and of topics for study has been put at the end of each chapter, therefore, to suggest further study in the relation of the content to the problems that confront us today, and to make clear the manner in which past experience may help to clarify present theories and practices. Each chapter is also prefaced by an outline to enable the student better to understand the facts of the text. Illustrations, where they have served to elucidate the text, have been inserted. Book excerpt: At a time marked by strong demands for educational reform, the American school curriculum is a topic of special concern. This volume provides a comprehensive historical record of the evolution of the curriculum in America from the colonial period to the present day. The editors have compiled a collection of influential and representative documents in primary, secondary, and higher education in the United States. Each document is introduced by a short essay that discusses its historical context and significance. The result is a valuable chronicle of the development of the American school curriculum. The work begins with an introductory piece that overviews the development of the curriculum and surveys the most important works on curriculum history. The introduction is followed by excerpts from 34 documents representative of the school curriculum from The Rules and Course of Study of Harvard College, 1642 to the 1983 report, A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform. The essay that introduces each document closes with a brief bibliography, and the volume concludes with a more extensive list of sources for further reading. By consulting this reference, historians and educators can trace the development of the curriculum over the last 350 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work embodies the most thorough treatment yet made in this country of the subject indicated by the title. The book opens with what history is, the problem of grading history, and the question of aims and values. The aim of history teaching is "to make the world intelligible." Next, the subject of history in schools of Europe and the United States; then, the biographical approach and the study of social groups. Practical methods in making history real by using visualizations are discussed, along with textbooks and their use, collateral reading, the historical method, correlation, and examinations. The critical chapters--dealing with the meaning of history, with the materials of history, with the aims and values of history-teaching, and with the grading of history--are models of clear, logical thinking expressed in simple but concrete language.
