Considerable anxiety has been felt by librarians and others as to the possibility of keeping pace with such conditions, both in the additions to their stock of books and in the provision of adequate catalogues and other guides for the use of their readers. In the course of the discussion and controversy arising on these matters considerable attention has been directed to the question of Subject Indexes, and many valuable suggestions have been made, although as yet little has been effected with general literature, beyond giving the author and subject entries of the books. The Subject Index may be divided into two classes - the one referring to the main subject of a book or work, which is generally set forth upon its title-page the other to the contents of a work which are not apparent from its title and are rarely noted in an ordinary catalogue. Taken singly or individually it will be found that almost every work published in these days. Exclusive perhaps of prose fiction, gives not only a clear announce ment of its main subject on the title-page, but also a description of its contents, often carefully arranged under subject headings, either in a list of contents or an index. It was the result of several months' study of library economy as found in some hundreds of books and pamphlets, and in over fifty personal visits to various American libraries. In this study, the author became convinced that the usefulness of these libraries might be greatly increased without additional expenditure. Three years practical use of the system here explained, leads him to believe that it will accomplish this result; for with its aid, the catalogues, shelf lists, indexes, and cross references essential to this increased usefulness, can be made more economically than by any other method which he has been able to find. The system was devised for cataloguing and indexing purposes, but it was found on trial to be equally valuable for numbering and arranging books and pamphlets on the shelves.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works, Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1885-1890 IN the year 1886, a Subject Index of the Accessions of recently-published books added to the Library of the British Museum between January, 1880, and August, 1885, was issued. The present volume continues the work from September, 1885, to January, 1891, and contains an Index of the books published during the last ten years which have been added to the Library during the years 1886, 1887, 1888, and 1889, together with the greater part of those received in 1885 and 1890. Works in the Slavonic, Hungarian, Celtic and Oriental languages are not included in either volume. The primary object of the Index is to assist readers in their researches in the Library of the British Museum; it has not therefore been considered necessary to reproduce such portions of the General Catalogue of Printed Books as are of the nature of a Class Catalogue. Thus, the heading 'bible' will not be found in the present Index, although a considerable proportion of the Biblical literature of the last five years has been included, under such headings as Christianity, Church History, Jews, etc. For the same reason no personal names have been taken as subject headings, and the heading Biography' has been used only for collected biographies, although such individual biographies as serve to illustrate History, Art, or Science have been frequently included, and will be found through out the work under various subject headings. Novels, poems, plays, and miscellaneous essays are also omitted, and only critical or historical works and selections will be found under such headings as Drama, Fiction, Hymns and Poetry. It should also be noted that when several editions of a book have been published during the period included in the present series, reference has been made only to the latest edition.
