Book excerpt: "In this book, the author posits that the exploration of urban students' engagement with school science using sociocultural perspectives may uncover factors that influence students learning and success in the science classrooms. The author further proposes that using curricula framed around sociocultural perspectives may develop students' understandings about the role science and technology plays in their lives, as well as well as in the larger society, thus making science more accessible and relevant for these children in urban settings." "There has been no study to date that examines the impact of curricular approaches guided by a sociocultural framework (contextualized curriculum in this study) on the comprehension level and attitudes of students. The study fills that gap and holds implications for the inclusion of alternative curricular framework in urban middle school science classrooms." "The author has used a mixed-methods study and draws upon both quantitative and qualitative data sources. The study design allows the reader to appreciate the perspectives of participating students and teachers on the use of contextualized curricular framework versus curricular framework guided by IVF practices in urban middle school science classrooms"--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This study presents a comparison of two instructional approaches, 6 + 1 Traits Writing and Interactive Editing, in a seventh grade social science class over a two week period. The comparison was conducted in order to measure students' achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing. Participating students in this study were selected using a table of random numbers and assigned to either the 6 +1 Traits Writing group or the Interactive Editing group. The study used a pretest to establish baseline achievement scores using a sample reading passage and comprehension questions from the district adopted curriculum. Students were also asked to write a summary and scored using the California Standardized Test (CST) released writing rubric. Instruction was given to group A using the 6 + 1 Traits Writing approach while group B received instruction using the Interactive Editing approach. A posttest was subsequently administered at the end of each instructional treatment using the same reading passage, comprehension questions, and writing assignment. Two independent writing judges scored students' writing using the CST rubric. Results indicated improvement in students' reading comprehension and writing for both treatment groups. However, the Interactive Editing group showed greater achievement in reading comprehension and quality of writing compared to the 6 +1 Traits Writing group.

Book excerpt: This K-12 teaching methods text opens each chapter with case studies illustrating the model in actual classroom practice and translates cognitive principles of learning into teaching strategies. As in past editions, the fourth edition of Strategies for Teachers continues to focus on instruction, using a models approach, linking prescriptive teaching strategies to specific content and thinking goals. This edition is composed of two main parts: the first two chapters outline advances in effective teaching and the teaching of thinking. The remaining chapters offer detailed coverage of the individual models, including suggestions for modifications that make them adaptable to a variety of teaching-learning situations. The text focuses on active learning, the use of research, psychology and experience, and emphasizes the teacher's central role in the learning process. New chapters on social interaction models and problem-based learning explain and illustrate applications of these models in classrooms. The practicality of this text is one of its key selling points, promising to make the fourth edition as vital a tool for instructors and students as the previous editions have been.

Book excerpt: This research study was designed to examine the impact of the incorporation of vocabulary instruction and various teacher strategies by a middle school science teachers team on student science achievement. The researcher focused on the teacher preparation of vocabulary word walls and the inclusion of specific words within individual units of study that would increase student science scores at the campus, district, and state levels. The study involved 320 eighth grade students at an urban central Texas middle school campus and explicitly analyzed student scores on campus, district, and Texas' STAAR tests. The research study included an ongoing discussion involving a Professional Learning Community (PLC) team that resulted in the study being a mixed method research design effort. The quantitative results of the research study revealed there was not a statistically significant difference in student campus, district, and Texas Science STAAR scores when comparing student performances in the academic years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. From a qualitative perspective, student improvement was noted regarding increased student awareness to speak and write using appropriate academic science language in the science classroom and the student's ability to self-correct incorrect science vocabulary by utilizing the science classrooms word walls and visual organizers in journals. Teacher improvement and growth was noted in building a strong team bond, implementing various teaching strategies, and increasing positive, daily reflection that contributed to more effective teaching in the classroom.

Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Book excerpt: Results of a collaborative, quasi-experimental, research and development project partnering university professors with a seventh grade science teacher are reported. The study proposed to test the academic effectiveness of innovative digitally-inspired instruction using commonly available digital tools on 33 North Texas public school students enrolled in seventh grade science. Technology was introduced into science lessons not as the goal of instruction, but as tools to develop effective and engaging 21st Century learning. State mandated student learning objectives were tested pre- and post-intervention using district benchmark tests to determine effects of digitally-inspired instruction on achievement. Mean achievement pass rates increased from 18%-42% for all learning objectives measured. Instructional unit lesson design and associated digital tools are also described.
