Book excerpt: Eighty-three Didelphis virginiana from the Portland metropolitan area were collected and studied from December 1974 through May 1976. Males averaged 3394 g, females 2318 g. An annual sex ratio of 68.7:31.3 was recorded. Data indicate the possibility of a year-round breeding season and suggest the occurrence of three peaks of reproductive activity: January-February, April-May and October-November. The six primary foods consumed annually are: leaf litter, mammals, gastropods, earthworms, grasses and pet food. Seasonal composition and diversity in the diet is marked. Five new parasite-host records were established. These include mites: Androlaelaps fahrenholsi, Haemogamasus nidi, Eulaelape stabularis tick, Ixodes angustus, and a nematode, Toxocara canis. Both minimum and maximum temperature, and perhaps precipitation to a lesser degree, affect the activity of the species. Nest building by an immature opossum is described.

Book excerpt: Ecology of the Opossum on a Natural Area in Northeastern Kansas' stands as a seminal work within the field of environmental studies, offering a comprehensive exploration of the North American opossum within its natural habitat. Through an integration of various methodological approachesranging from statistical ecology to observational ethologythe collection presents a multifaceted view on the survival strategies, breeding behaviors, and ecological significance of this often overlooked species. The anthology's strength lies not only in its breadth of scientific inquiry but also in the ecological narrative it weaves, highlighting the opossum's role in biodiversity and ecosystem health. The editors, Lewis L. Sandidge and Henry S. Fitch, bring together a rich tapestry of research findings, making this work stand out both for its scientific rigor and its holistic approach to wildlife ecology. Both Sandidge and Fitch are renowned figures in the realm of environmental science, with a history of contributions that transcend mere academic interest to foster a deeper public understanding of conservation biology. This anthology aligns with critical environmental movements, advocating for the sustainability of natural habitats through empirical evidence and passionate discourse. It is through their collective expertise that the anthology offers an unparalleled insight into the complexity of ecological relationships, furthering the academic and practical discussions on wildlife conservation and biodiversity. 'Ecology of the Opossum on a Natural Area in Northeastern Kansas' invites readers into a world less traveled by mainstream ecological research, presenting an enriching compilation that speaks volumes on the intricate dance of nature's tapestry. This collection is aimed not only at scholars and students within the environmental sciences but also at conservationists and nature enthusiasts seeking to deepen their understanding of ecosystem dynamics. The anthology underscores the importance of every species in maintaining the delicate equilibrium of our planet, encouraging readers to engage with the text not just for its academic value but for its contribution to a global conversation on conservation and biodiversity stewardship.

Book excerpt: The definitive volume on opossums, a group of ecologically and scientifically important mammals, covering natural history, evolution, behavior, and biogeography. Opossums are the most diverse and ecologically important group of New World marsupials, although only the Virginia opossum is familiar to North American residents. In fact, many species of opossums are found in Neotropical rainforests, savannas, and other habitats, where they are key participants in food webs and other ecological relationships. One species, the short-tail opossum (Monodelphis domestica), has recently become a model organism for biomedical researchers. Eclipsed in the public imagination by their Australian relatives, opossums remained for many years a somewhat obscure group, of interest primarily to taxonomists and students of mammalian reproduction. While thousands of scientific articles have appeared in recent years on opossum systematics, morphology, behavior, physiology, genetics, and ecology, this important but widely scattered literature has never been effectively summarized—until now. In Opossums, the first book-length treatment of these fascinating organisms, recognized authorities Robert S. Voss and Sharon A. Jansa synthesize a wide range of available information about the diversity, comparative biology, and natural history of the opossum. Peering into every biological facet of the lives of these long-neglected mammals, the volume includes • introductory chapters explaining the paleontological and biogeographic context for opossum evolution • an overview of the extant fauna, which includes over 100 species in 18 genera • a section devoted to opossum phenotypes: morphology, physiology, and behavior • detailed information on opossum natural history, including habitats, diets, predators, and parasites • in-depth and novel interpretations of opossums' adaptive radiation in a phylogenetic context Intended for undergraduate biology majors, graduate students, and research professionals, this coherent and original portrait of opossums will be of particular interest to mammalogists, evolutionary biologists, and Neotropical field biologists as well as biomedical researchers working with Monodelphis domestica as a model organism.

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interspecific association between two distantly related species, Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and raccoon (Procyon lotor), in western Tennessee was examined utilizing live-trap data collected over 6 years of work at Ames Plantation and Edward J. Meeman Biological Station. Results showed an overall neutral relationship between the two species with some common habitat features associated with the presence of both species which allows for possible prediction of their co-occurrence utilizing MaxEnt. Models produced from this study were successful in predicting areas of occurrence and co-occurrence. Contributing habitat factors to species presence were similar to those noted in previous investigations. Future work could include other possible competitors or predators of the two species, seasonal analyses, larger geographic areas, and more evenly dispersed data. It also would be interesting to utilize species that exhibit either commensalism or mutualism.
