Book excerpt: [Author's abstract] This study addresses the increasing importance of student test scores by examining the different factors that influence test scores. Composite test scores of tenth grade students from the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 are examined using a four-part model which includes student role performance, school, family, and peer factors. Ordinary Least Squares analysis indicates that the strongest predictor of student test scores is socioeconomic status, resulting in a statistically significant increase in the standardized coefficient of .224 points. These results support previous research and possible directions for public policy are given.

Book excerpt: Since 1986, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has collected information from 11th-grade students about their employment activities. Out of the 29,000 students asked about work in the 1986 assessment, 54% reported working some amount of time each week, and over 28% reported working more than 15 hours per week. Thus, of 2.9 million 11th graders questioned in 1986, an estimated 1.6 million were employed and attending school. Data in this report cover the general characteristics and academic achievement of working students included in the NAEP as well as ancillary information from other studies. Student characteristics analyzed include gender, race/ethnicity, parents' education, high school program type, mathematics and science courses taken, postsecondary expectations, absenteeism, homework time, and television viewing time. Results indicate that: (1) employment has various effects on student achievement; (2) schools vary in the amount of time and effort they demand from their students, but it appears that some teachers lower their expectations regarding working students; (3) students' jobs should be examined in terms of content compatible with youth development and achievement; and (4) where work assignments are connected to schooling objectives, work can complement, rather than compete with, schooling objectives. Twenty-nine data tables and one graph are included. (TJH)

Book excerpt: This ex post facto, causal-comparative quantitative study examined the relationship between student socioeconomic status and academic achievement at affluent North Texas schools. Social constructionism, critical theory, and cultural and social reproduction theory were used as the foundation of the study. Using archival data from the 2018-2019 school year for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) in mathematics and reading, scores for students identified as economically disadvantaged were compared with scores of affluent students. Independent samples t-tests were conducted to analyze test scores. The t-tests revealed that there were differences in STAAR scores between economically disadvantaged students and affluent students. Chi-square tests of independence, descriptive statistics, and multivariate linear and logistic regressions were used to ascertain significant group differences. The analyses presented results that showed a significant association between socioeconomic status and academic achievement. Economically disadvantaged students scored significantly lower than affluent students in both mathematics and reading. To analyze results further, economically disadvantaged students and affluent students were compared within their race/ethnic group. These analyses yielded the same results. Economically disadvantaged students in one race/ethnic group scored lower in mathematics and reading than affluent students in the same race/ethnic group. Analyses also showed that socioeconomic status was the most significant predictor of student score on the Mathematics and Reading STAAR when compared to race/ethnicity, gender, and grade level. A call for additional studies is warranted to examine why economically disadvantaged students score lower on STAAR than affluent students.

Today there is enough empirical evidence showing the link between social origin and educational performance. The first chapter of this book shows how the social class, socio-economic status of family and parents' expectations about the academic development of their children influence in the educational performance. Chapter two focuses on the empirical literature regarding the relationship of the 65% instructional expenditure ratio, education production function, student achievement, and school district wealth. Chapter three dives into the aspects of executive functioning and its relation to academic achievement, as well as analyses the connection between the academic achievement and the perception the children have of their own executive functioning. Chapter four analyses in detail, in accordance with previous theoretical and empirical data, self-protective mechanisms, self-handicapping and defensive pessimism. Chapter five examines the interrelations between academic striving, effective functioning, personal resolve, and school experience of secondary school students. Chapter six examines the influence of shared and non-shared environmental influences on math-based reaction time/chronometric tasks, as well as their influence on the relationship between chronometric and standardised paper-and-pencil tasks. Chapter seven examines the historical framework underlying postsecondary education in the United States and in Texas, current issues of student attrition, retention, and college success, and ethnicity as it relates to student performance, attrition, and persistence. Chapter eight discusses the role of executive functions on academic performance in Mexican at-risk adolescents. Chapter nine analyses Hispanic student achievement in reading and mathematics as a function of grade span configuration. The final chapter is an overview of the transformation in education through ubiquitous access to the digital universe.

Using data from three large-scale nationally representative surveys of high school seniors, this paper seeks to document whether the gap between students from high and low socioeconomic situations changed between 1972 and 1992. The analysis avoids some of the disadvantages in the literature on the intergenerational transmission of income by using large-scale studies and by using education as a measure of permanent income. As expected, I find that students from the bottom quartile consistently perform below students from the top quartile of socioeconomic status. More importantly, the gap in standardized test scores between student types increased during the 1970's. Though this gap also increased in the 1980's, how much of that increase is due to increased income inequality is unclear.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of socioeconomic status on academic achievement as measured by the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Achievement Test and the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program Writing Assessment. The population consisted of 8th grade students enrolled in 4 elementary schools in a rural school system in Tennessee. Data were analyzed for the population of the 2006-2007 academic school year. A 2-way analysis of variance model was used to compare the means among the schools, the means between economically disadvantaged students and those who were not economically disadvantaged, and whether there was a significant school by socioeconomic status interaction. The independent variables were the schools (School A, B, C, D) and the socioeconomic status of the students (those who qualified for free or reduced price meals and those who did not qualify for free or reduced price meals). The 5 dependent variables in the study were the number of items students answered correctly on the math, language arts, science, and social studies portions of the test and the holistic writing test scores. The quantitative findings revealed the F test for the school by socioeconomic status interaction term was not significant in all 5 research questions. The mean score of economically disadvantaged students was lower than noneconomically disadvantaged students in math, language arts, social studies, and science. Results indicated no difference in the mean writing scores between students who were economically disadvantaged and students who were not. When the main effect of school was significant, the Bonferroni post hoc multiple pairwise comparisons test was used to determine which pair of school means was different. The main effect of school was significant in math, social studies, science, and writing. There were no significant differences in the mean number of language arts items answered correctly among the schools.
