Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this bestseller expands and extends Gysbers and Henderson’s acclaimed five-phase model of planning, designing, implementing, evaluating, and enhancing Pre-K–12 guidance and counseling programs. This enduring, influential textbook has been fully updated to reflect current theory and practice, including knowledge gained through various state and local adaptations of the model since publication of the last edition. Exciting additions to this new edition are increased attention to diversity and the range of issues that students present, counselor accountability, and the roles and responsibilities of district- and building-level guidance and counseling leaders in an increasingly complex educational environment. An abundant array of examples, sample forms, job descriptions, evaluation surveys, flyers, letters, and procedures used by various states and school districts clearly illustrate each step of program development. At the end of each chapter, a new feature called “Your Progress Check” functions as a tracking tool for growth at each stage of the change process. *Requests for digital versions from ACA can be found on www.wiley.com. *To purchase print copies, please visit the ACA website *Reproduction requests for material from books published by ACA should be directed to [email protected]

Book excerpt: The purpose of the school counseling program is to impart specific skills and learning opportunities through academic, career, and personal/social development experiences in a proactive and preventive manner for all students. This document presents national standards that can establish similar goals, expectations, support systems, and experiences for all students as a result of participation in a school counseling program. Chapter 1 defines standards and provides the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) rationale for the development of these national standards. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the history of the school counseling profession and defines the school counseling program. The program goals are outlined, and major components are described along with benefits derived by its constituencies. Chapter 3 outlines the standards for the areas of academic, career, and social development. Following this is a list of student competencies that define the specific knowledge, attitudes, and skills that students should obtain as a result of participating in the program. Chapter 4 focuses on the initial stages of implementation and evaluation for a standards-based school counseling program. Sample activities of standards into practice are presented. Appendixes include information about ASCA, the Research Development Process for National Standards, and The School Counselor and comprehensive School Counseling Programs. (Contains 48 references.) Examples of national models and paradigms, all designed to make the profession manageable and understandable, are on display throughout the book. The authors have incorporated the human side of school counseling at the core of every chapter, hoping not to block the spirit of caring for people by what at first glance might appear to be academic jargon. This book is designed as a means for graduate students and others to lend their voices to the issues confronting school counselors and, most importantly, to chart the course for invention in school counseling. The authors believe that the school counseling profession is enriched when the voices of aspiring professionals meet the voices of experience, with the aim of creating new ways to serve. For future school counselors.

Book excerpt: The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs is a resource to develop effective and high quality comprehensive school counseling programs that align with Texas statutes and rules governing the work of school counselors. It outlines a process for tailoring school counseling programs to meet the varying needs of students across an array of school districts through implementation of the four components of school counseling programs, Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support. With this resource, a school counselor will learn to use campus-specific data to identify the unique needs of a campus and design a comprehensive school counseling program to meet those needs. Recognizing the important roles of the entire educational community, the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs provides examples of how parents, teachers, administrators, principals and school counselors can best contribute to implementation of each of the four components of comprehensive school counseling programs. It provides a developmental framework for a school counseling program curriculum that includes activities at each grade level to enhance students¿ educational, career, personal and social development.

This book was released on 2023-04-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. The ecological concept views that human development is influenced by the environmental context. The relationship between the two is reciprocal and has an important influence on one another, as well as on the conditions of post-pandemic education. The COVID-19 pandemic has had an important impact on human life, particularly on education. Conventional learning patterns shift to online mechanisms which of course have advantages and disadvantages, especially in people in developing countries like Indonesia. Lack of interaction due to the pandemic impacts student behaviour, such as learning and coping difficulties (Pavin Ivanec, T., 2022). An important issue that needs serious attention in education, as well as mental health practices in schools after the pandemic, is human development efforts through education which minimizes inequality in education and the relevance of education which is no longer adequate. This can be achieved if Education is geared toward empowering students to engage with real social issues so as to promote a sustainable future. Schools and all existing stakeholders (guidance and counseling teachers/school counselors) can contribute to facilitating sustainable human development through an ethical dimension and presenting an educational model that is able to build students’ self-confidence (Curry-Stevens, 2007). In the end, it is hoped that the efforts of this educational institution can support the achievement of the SDGs, especially in the area of education, which has been proclaimed since the 2000s through the millennium declaration by countries in the world.
