This book was released on 1991 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed knowledge of the gas-phase reactions which occur during propellant ignition and combustion are required to understand and model these processes. If detailed models were available, modification of propellant formulations for improved combustion behavior could be achieved with much less trial-and-error testing. Furthermore, detailed models could be used to generate simplified kinetics schemes for use in propellant models. The present research program, centers around the development and application of a microprobe, mass spectrometer (MPMS) system to study the gas phase chemistry of solid propellant ingredients and solid propellants during heating by a CO2 laser and during steady combustion. The MPMS system uses quartz microprobes with orifice sizes of 100 microns or less to withdraw gases from the region above the sample material. Through a two stage pumping system, the sample is delivered to a quadrupole mass spectrometer for analysis. Sampling is continuous throughout the combustion event so that species profiles of stable intermediates above the sample are obtained during the experiments. In addition to the MPMS system, existing experimental methods to be used in the work include high speed direct photography, high speed schlieren photography, microthermocouple probes and photodiodes (for first visible light).

Book excerpt: This research program is designed to address the critical need for data on the gas-phase chemistry of solid propellants through the development and application of a microprobe mass spectrometer (MPMS) system. The MPMS system is being used to study the gas-phase chemistry occurring above solid propellant ingredients and actual solid propellants when they are heated and/or ignited by the heat flux from a CO2 laser. In addition to the MPMS system, direct and Schlieren photography are being used to study the flame structure and twenty- five micron thermocouples are being used to measure the gas-phase temperature profile. During the last year nearly fifty tests were performed with neat RDX as well as with composite, XM-39 and BLX-9, and double-base propellants, M-9 and JA-2. Measurements of gas-phase species and temperature profiles for neat RDX and tow RDX composite propellants show that while the chemical species detected are similar, the gas-phase structure for these propellants is significantly different. For incident laser energy fluxes above 100 W/sq cm, all three propellants exhibited a primary flame caused by the reaction of CH2O and NO2. The mole fraction of CH2O at or near the sample surface was approximately 0.20 for RDX and XM39 but was about 0.33 for BLX9 due to the addition of CH2O from the decomposition of the BTTN energetic plasticizer. The primary flame products consisted of significant amounts of NO for all three propellants and CO for the composites along with smaller amounts of H2O for RDX and BLX9, CO2 for RDX and XM39, and h2 for RDX.

Book excerpt: Detailed knowledge of the gas-phase reactions which occur during propellant ignition and combustion are required to understand and model these processes. If detailed models were available, modification of propellant formulations for improved combustion behavior could be achieved with much less trail-and-error testing. Furthermore, detailed models could be used to generate simplified kinetics schemes for use in propellant models. Without a firm basis for these simplified kinetic schemes, the kinetic parameters are often adjusted to fit burning rate and ignition data; thus the propellant models are reduced to sophisticated curve fits to experimental data. The present research program, centers around the development and application of a microprobe, mass spectrometer (MPMS) system to study the gas phase chemistry of solid propellant ingredients and solid propellants during heating by a CO2 laser and during steady combustion. Book excerpt: This research program is designed to address the critical need for data on the gas phase chemistry of solid propellants through the development and application of a Microprobe Mass Spectrometer (MPMS) system. The MPMS systems is being used to study the gas-phase chemistry occurring above solid propellant ingredients and actual solid propellants when they are heated and/or ignited by the heat flux from a Carbon dioxide laser. Currently the MPMS system uses quartz microprobes with orifice sizes of twenty microns which results in a spatial resolution of approximately 100 microns. In addition to the MPMS system, direct and Schlieren photography are being used to study the flame structure and twenty-five micron thermocouples are being used to measure the gas-phase temperature profile. The specific goal of this research is to obtain detailed species profiles of the major reacting species above the surface of the individual propellant ingredients and actual propellants in order to obtain an improved understanding of the controlling chemical processes and of the interactions of binders and oxidizers in heterogeneous propellants. In the testing both heterogeneous and homogeneous propellants are being studied as well as their individual ingredients.

Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to determine the chemical mechanisms of solid propellant ignition and deflagration with an emphasis on the decomposition of individual propellant ingredients and on the gas phase reactions of the products of decomposition. A quadrupole mass spectrometer system using quartz microprobes measures species profiles above the surface of the sample during CO2 laser induced pyrolysis or during laser assisted deflagration of the sample. In addition microthermocouples are used to measure the surface temperature and gas phase temperatures during testing. To complement the experimental studies, chemical kinetic models produced by other researchers are used to model some of the data obtained. jg p.4.

Book excerpt: Solid propellant is the most important energy source for rocket, missile and other weapons to launch, and is the key material to realize the firing range and damage effect of weapons. In order to meet the requirements of weapon application, the overall requirements for the energy performance, combustion performance, mechanical performance, storage performance, safety performance and process performance of solid propellant are put forward. Therefore, there are many challenges to fully meet the requirements of solid propellant and apply it to weapons. In recent years, with the development of material science, computational science and experimental technology, there are many reports about the composition, structure, performance research and prediction of solid propellants. This book reviews the research progress in solid propellant binder, energy performance prediction and thermodynamic calculation, combustion gas flow and combustion performance regulation, material storage performance research and safety performance simulation, and discusses the key development direction. The summary and prospect of this paper are expected to provide guidance, reference and inspiration for relevant researchers to carry out the research of solid propellant. This book is suitable for researchers, technicians and students who are engaged in solid propellant, weapons, chemistry and other work to read, for reference in specific research work. Due to the limited level of editors and short time, some problems are inevitable. We regret for some problems.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning propellant samples were quenched, and the burned surfaces were examined microscopically and by chemical analysis. Studies are in progress on a series of propellants including XM39, M30, JA2, RDX, and HMX-polyester compositions. The results to date are consistent with the idea that at least at low pressures (below 2.0 MPa), a liquid layer forms during combustion of most of the propellants, with the possible exception of JA2; scanning electron microscope examination shows the existence of a liquid layer but does not provide evidence of degradation below this layer. The effect of composition and pressure on this liquid layer is discussed. Further gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis confirms our earlier result that at least in the case of XM39, the stabilizer is depleted considerably in the surface layers, presumably by reaction with nitrogen oxides formed by decomposition of RDX and NC. Further high performance liquid chromatography results confirm our earlier result that for XM39, HMX2, and RDX (which contain the cyclic nitramines HMX and RDX), there is a significant increase in concentration of the mechanistically significant nitrosamines MRDX and DRDX over the very small amounts possibly present as impurities In RDX and HMX. FTIR-PAS results provide evidence for condensed-phase reaction in M30 and JA2.

Schroder and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burning propellant samples are quenched, and the burned surfaces are examined microscopically and by chemical analysis. Studies are in progress on a series of propellants including XM39, M30, JA2, RDX, HMX, HMX/PU, and HMP/polyester ('HMX2') compositions. Preliminary results on quenched samples of XM39 burned at low pressures show evidence of a liquid layer approximately 100-300 micron thick. SEM examination reveals little if any evidence of degradation below this liquid layer. GCMS analysis shows that the stabilizer is depleted considerably in the surface layers of quenched samples, presumably by reaction with nitrogen oxides formed by decomposition of RDX and NC. HPLC results show that there is a significant increase the very small amounts possibly present as impurities.
