A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Interaction between Health-promoting and Health Risk Behaviours in Health by : Huixuan Zhou
Download or read book Exploring the Interaction between Health-promoting and Health Risk Behaviours in Health written by Huixuan Zhou and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health-related behaviours play positive or negative roles in people’s health. For instance, health risk behaviours, such as sedentary behaviours (e.g., binge-watching TV and playing computer games), the use of alcohol, tobacco, or other substances, and lack of sleep, have been found to negatively affect the physical and mental health of people. On the other hand, some studies show that health-promoting behaviours, such as physical activity and healthy dietary habits, can mitigate or reverse the negative effects of health risk behaviours on health outcomes. In the meantime, some studies indicate that the harmful effects of some health risk behaviours may not be mitigated by health-promoting behaviours. For instance, some studies show that sedentary behaviours and physical activity are independently associated with some physical and mental health outcomes; interventions to increase physical activity with and without decreasing sedentary time lead to different health outcomes. Clearly more research is needed to show the interaction between health-promoting behaviours and health risk behaviours in health, which could shed light on the management of health-related behaviours.

This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COVID-19 has resulted in drastic socio-political and economical changes on a global scale. On an individual level, the pandemic has significantly changed the lifestyle and personal values of millions of people. It can be argued that COVID-19 was a result of humans living in an anthropocentric way, in which humans are at the top of the hierarchy. The impact and spread of COVID-19 have forced us to face our affective relationship with the environment from a Biocentric perspective, rather than an anthropocentric perspective. The Biocentric perspective encourages us to reflect on the meaning of values of our social integration and emphasizes the importance of a sustainable affective interaction with nature. To improve human capacity of coping with crises like COVID-19 in the future, it would be important that we develop biocentric education and reinforce lifestyles that promote sustainability
