Book excerpt: The characteristics of lightning, artificially induced by wire-trailing rockets were measured in a cooperative program involving investigators from France, from the Flight Hazards Branch of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and from New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology. Lightning currents ranging from a few hundred amperes to a peak of 79 kA were measured. The waveforms of the electromagnetic signals produced by the lightning had associated magnetic field variations in excess of 10 T/s with rise times ranging from 40 ns to 1 microsecond. The development of an 11 cm radar was completed for a determination of the interaction between lightning and the surrounding atmosphere. Preliminary data on lightning echoes have now been obtained with it.

Due to its complex nature, research continues in many countries and reveals amazing results. Lightning is actively observed because of its relevance to Earth climate and air composition in addition to the classical aspects of related human fatalities and damage to forests, buildings, power lines, aircraft, structures and electronic devices. In this volume, the most important contemporary questions on lightning are addressed and analyzed under many experimental and theoretical aspects. Lightning detection techniques using ground-based and space-borne methods are described, along with network engineering and statistical analysis. Contributions detail research on atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, lightning physics, modeling of electrical storms and middle atmospheric events. Special phenomena such as triggered lightning and sprite observations are examined. Lightning-induced nitrogen oxides and their effects on atmospheric chemistry and climate are discussed. Each topic is presented by international experts in the field. Topics include: * air chemistry * convective storms * infrasound from lightning * lightning and climate change * lightning and precipitation * lightning and radiation * lightning and supercells * lightning and thunderstorms * lightning detection * lightning from space * lighting protection * lightning return strokes * observations and interpretations * spatial distribution and frequency * triggered lightning * weather extremes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mountain-top laboratory facility has been established in central New Mexico for studies of the effects of high powered lasers on the ionization of the air and on the possible triggering of lightning from thunderclouds overhead. A net of electric field meters and another one with television cameras and video recorders have been established for determinations of the nature of normal and of triggered lightning in the operational area. A special electric field meter is carried beneath a captive balloon to heights of about 600 m above the facility and measured the electric fields there for the entire life of several storms. The field strengths aloft were as much as 6 fold greater than those observed at the surface; the field changes after lightning did not show the characteristic reversal caused by the corona produced space charge and the field after lightning recovered with a linear increase until lightning occurred again. Monitoring of electric fields aloft therefore provide a better choice of the optimum times for a lightning triggering attempt. As part of the 1979 field work, lightning discharges were induced twice by the use of wire-trailing, French rockets fired into thunderclouds over the Magdalena Mountains. As a result, interesting measurements of the breakdown process were obtained using AF Weapons Laboratory electromagnetic sensors: Magnetic field derivative signals in excess of 17 Teslas/second were observed in one of the triggered discharges.

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.
