Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between student participation in extra-curricular activities and the achivement of desirable objectives of education in selected Winnipeg junior and senior high schools. Texts and source books on the extra-curriculum, curriculum planning and administration, along with various types of periodicals, reports, memoranda and other statements, questionnaires, printed programs of events, school year books, letters, telephone inquiries, and personal observations were used to approach the problem in four ways: 1. to survey the general attitudes towards extra-curricular activities and indicate the claimed outcomes of the extra-curriculum; 2. (a) to establish an acceptable set of objectives of education and, (b) to indicate the relationships between participation in the extra-curriculum and the desired outcomes of education; 3. to examine the relationship between extent of participation in the extra-curriculum and the student's mental ability and academic achievement; 4. to survey university attendance and subsequent occupations of some high school graduates in relation to their participation in extra-curricular activities. The first approach appears to indicate that, in the opinion of most writers, speakers, parents and students, a properly supervised and controlled program of extra-curricular activities makes very important contributions towards the achievement of desirable objectives of education. According to some sources, certain desirable outcomes are almost impossible without such a program. The second approach to the problem appears to indicate that, generally, Winnipeg schools should attempt to extend the democratic way of life and assist in the development of each individual student to the highest possible potentiality. This means that the schools should strive to develop in the children the knowledge, skills, habits, understandings, attitudes and character traits which are essential in the healthful living of the "good life". Schools should attempt to give students the personal qualifications and training necessary for finding and holding a place in a vocation which is best suited to the particular characteristics of the individual. It is also important that the individual should learn to participate in, and contribute to, community life.

Book excerpt: Little is known about the mechanisms by which extracurricular participation in high school influences educational attainment in young adulthood. Also limited is an understanding of the different types of extracurricular participation and how various activities may manifest within the relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment, with social capital, parental expectations, and academic achievement presented as mediators. Additionally, the present study will explore socioeconomic differences in the proposed relationships. The sample consisted of 5,239 ninth through twelfth graders from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple-group SEM were used to test pathways. Extracurricular participation was categorized into sports participation, non-sport participation, mixed participation (including both sport and non-sport), and no participation. Social capital, a latent factor, was measured by the latent variables of family and school capital. Various indicators of family closeness and inclusion of school culture from survey items operationalize social capital. Parental expectations, another latent factor, was measured by one survey indicator using the question of how disappointed would your resident father and mother be if you did not graduate from college. Academic achievement was measured by grade point average and calculated by the average of self-reported grades in four subjects: English, math, social studies, and science. Educational level attained used seven levels ranging from less than 8th grade to beyond a Bachelor degree. Gender, race, and parent education were also included as covariates. Social capital, parental expectations, and high school academic achievement were all shown to be mediators between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment. However, social capital's impact on educational attainment was indirect through GPA rather than direct. Sport showed better capacity to strengthen social capital than non-sport. However, non-sport participants achieved higher high school GPA than sport participants. On average, students involved in both sport and non-sport activities had more positive effects on all model variables than students involved in sports only. Results for socioeconomic comparison showed some evidence for the benefit of sport participation directly on educational level for low-income students. Practically speaking, the conclusion of the study is that students need to participate in a combination of activities that include both sport and non-sport to improve their chances of educational attainment.

Many schools encourage their students to participate in these voluntary activities because they build skills that may not be taught in the classroom, but may be important in becoming successful in school and in the community. Extracurricular activities put students in leadership positions, teach them team work, and can instill a confidence in their abilities. Previous research has shown that participation in extracurricular activities in high school can affect labor market conditions and educational achievements, but few studies have differentiated the impacts of different types of extracurricular activities on earnings and educational attainment. This paper examines the academic and labor market effects of participating in a performing arts activity in high school. The arts are of particular interest because the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 lists it as a core academic course. The core courses are believed to increase the academic attainment of students, and are eligible for increased federal funding based on "scientifically-based research" (Arts Education Partnership, 2005; Arts Education Partnership, 2006, p. 4). A major problem in program evaluation is the possibility of selection bias due to the non-randomized way individuals self-select into activities. To reduce the bias, a treatment effects model is estimated using the covariate matching technique. I use the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) to test my hypotheses.
