This book was released on 2007 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of supplemental direct instruction on fifth graders' written expression. We looked to see if supplemental instruction on isolated grammar skills (commas in a series, parts of speech, possessives, and subject-verb agreement), could improve student's skills in these areas (direct measure) and their writing skills (generalization measure). We provided them with 10-15 minutes supplemental lessons four days a week. On Fridays, the whole class was given a skill check-up to check their progress on their grammar skills and a three-minute writing probe, in which students responded to story starter. We measured their total words written and correct word sequences minus incorrect word sequences. Findings indicated that the supplemental lessons helped to improve their grammar skills, but did not generalize to their writing. On the skill check-up, they needed to reach mastery, 80% or better on the target skill, for two consecutive weeks in order to move onto the next skill. Each of the four students in this study were taught three skills.
