Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of high school athletic administrators and coaches of the impact of supervision on athletic coaches. This qualitative study investigated the perceptions of eight high school athletic administrators and twenty-three high school athletic coaches. Through the use of constructed response and open-ended survey questions, the study identified (1) how high school athletic administrators (athletic directors) and coaches perceived the administrative supervision process of athletic coaches; (2) the perceptions of athletic administrators and coaches on the potential impact of the administrative supervision process on athletic coaches; and (3) the perceptions of high school athletic administrators and coaches on what the ideal supervision model should look like for high school athletic coaches. Individual interviews with five participants from each group provided additional information that directly related to the research question. While not a comparative study between the two groups, areas of agreement and disagreement were revealed. Results showed that both administrators and coaches found administrators to be effective mentors and leaders. Significant congruence existed on the value of face-to-face conversations between the two parties resulting in a positive influence on coaches, as well as a similarity in their answers to the topic of the need for additional professional development. A clear discrepancy existed on the presence and effectiveness of a formal evaluation process of coaches by administrators. Additional open-ended questions confirmed that the perceptions of the administrators and athletic coaches differed slightly about the overall impact of the current supervision process. The study supports promotion of the importance of extra-curricular athletics and the implementation of positive change in the administrative supervision of those programs.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of the study was to determine high school administrators' perception of the future of women as athletic directors in the state of Missouri. Superintendents, high school principals, athletic directors in Missouri completed a Likert Survey in an effort to understand perceptual context as to why more women are not in positions as athletic directors. Learning from their insight could bring about a discussion as to the importance of women's leadership roles as athletic directors in more high schools in Missouri, encourage more women to apply for, retain or obtain positions as athletic directors, and to portray this position as a viable career choice for young women in the future."--abstract.

Book excerpt: This qualitative research study explored public and non-public high school athletic directors' perception regarding the impact of sport specialization on high school student-athletes. This study was conducted with 30 high schools across the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's District III region. Results were gathered by using an online survey, interviews, and a review of athletic department coaching handbooks, mission statements, and any school board policies relating to sport specialization, sharing of student-athletes, sharing of facilities, and multiple-sport participation. Thirty athletic directors completed the survey and seven were then interviewed. The results from this study indicated that the majority of athletic directors perceived the disadvantages of sport specialization exceeded the advantages for high school student-athletes. While most athletic directors agreed that there is some necessity to specialize to increase skill ability, most also agreed that specializing in one sport provides a greater negative impact than positive impact on high school student-athletes. Athletic directors perceived several factors as critical components in a student-athlete's decision to specialize: opportunities for student-athletes to participate in sports outside of their school district (travel and club teams); pressure from coaches and parents/guardians; the fear of not making a team; and student-athletes' and parents/guardians' belief that specialization helps to obtain a college scholarship. An overwhelming number of participants agreed that playing multiple sports is an important aspect of the high school student-athlete experience; that central administration supports multiple sport athletes; and that they do not encourage student-athletes to specialize during childhood/adolescence.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the underlying dimensions that influence high school athletic director's view of effective high school athletic coaching. By identifying these factors, it was determined if high school athletic directors agree that the components for effective athletic coaching run parallel to Charlotte Danielson's (2013) framework for effective teaching since athletic coaching is a form of teaching. The study surveyed high school athletic directors in Kansas using a modified version of the Framework for Teaching Survey developed by Sweeley (2004). The study also identified if various factors such as school size, years of experience as athletic director, and gender of the athletic director influenced athletic director's opinions of effective high school athletic coaching. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted using direct oblimin as the oblique rotation method and principal axis factoring as the extraction method. The factor analysis revealed three factors representing the underlying dimensions of athletic director views, namely, Coaching Culture, Content Knowledge, and Servant Leadership. Using the raw mean factor score for each participant calculated, the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) did not find any significant relationships existed between the identified factors and the independent variables of school size, years of experience, and gender. Overall, the results supported that Charlotte Danielson's (2013) Framework for Teaching was applicable when applied to effective high school athletic coaching and could be applied to all high school sports of all levels for both head and assistant coaches.

Book excerpt: High school sport has often been considered a viable context for promoting youth development of life skills and character (Turgeon et al., 2019). So much so that key stakeholders, including coaches and athletic directors, have been charged with meeting the mission statements of these education-based sport programs (Camire et al., 2009). However, despite a focus on promotion of psychosocial development in the very definition of education-based athletics (Blanton et al., 2021), coach and athletic director perceptions of their responsibility for fulfilling this 'social mission' of student-athlete psychosocial development has not been explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to answer the following research questions: (1) How do coaches and athletic directors perceive their responsibility for the social mission of high school sport and student athletic success, and (2) what job characteristics predict perceptions of responsibility for the social mission of high school sport and student athletic success? This study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design with stratified sampling of 191 coaches and 112 athletic directors spanning all four divisions in Michigan. Responsibility and predictors of responsibility such as skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, feedback from the job, feedback from agents, and working with others were measured using the Job Diagnostic Survey (Hackman & Oldham, 1975), and explanatory follow-up focus group interviews were conducted (Creswell & Plano-Clark, 2018).Results from Research Question 1 indicate that coaches perceive the same amount of responsibility for both the social mission and the athletic success of student-athletes. Athletic directors perceive more responsibility for the social mission than they do for promoting athletic success, although coaches had higher levels of perceived responsibility for the social mission than the athletic directors. In the follow up focus groups the coaches indicated feelings of perceived definitive responsibility for the social mission, as well as some level of nuanced responsibility when recognizing that others also may share the responsibility for student-athlete psychosocial development. Coaches also commented on the balance of responsibility between promoting athlete life skills development while fostering athletic success. Athletic directors discussed a perceived definitive responsibility for the social mission, with their conversations highlighting that nuanced responsibility includes the multitude of other duties assigned to their jobs. Specific to the athletic director group was the mentioning of accountability and evaluation as an obvious, and mostly unwanted, next step from assuming responsibility for student-athlete psychosocial development. Results of Research Question 2 revealed that status as an educator, task identity and task significance significantly predicted coaches' level of responsibility for fulfilling the social mission of high school sport. In follow-up focus groups, the coaches discussed task identity, feedback, motivation for joining the profession, time demands of the job, and external support as important influences on responsibility. In the athletic director sample, task identity and feedback from the job significantly predicted athletic directors' responsibility for fulfilling the social mission. In follow-up focus groups, athletic directors emphasized task identity, feedback, administrator responsibility for the perception of the school, motivation for joining the profession, and demands of the job as important influences the responsibility for the social mission of education-based athletics. The current study provides foundational data on the responsibility of coaches and athletic directors for future lines of research.

Book excerpt: The present study examined how athletic directors perceive their leadership roles in interscholastic athletics and the relationship of their leadership styles to their job satisfaction. The conceptual framework of this study was Bass and Avolio's (1994) full range leadership model, also known as the transformational-transactional leadership model, which consists of 9 factor--5 transformational behaviors: idealized influence (attributed), idealized influence (behavior), inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration; 2 transactional behaviors: contingent reward and management-by-exception (active); 2 passive/avoidant behaviors: management-by-exception (passive) and laissez-faire. These 9 factors are measured by the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The study was also informed by Chelladurai's multidimensional model of leadership in sport which focuses on transformational effects of sport leaders on individual satisfaction and group performance. The study was significant in that the effects of transformational leadership on individuals in sporting organizations have not been fully explored in previous research. Both the MLQ and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) served as data collection tools. A sample of 500 athletic directors from across the United States was invited to participate in an electronic survey. Usable data were returned by 55 (11%) of the original sample. Participants self-assessed their leadership styles via the MLQ and job satisfaction via the MSQ. Data were analyzed via canonical correlation analysis followed by canonical commonality analysis. One canonical root was interpreted (Rc2 = .22; pCanonical structure coefficients indicated that Transformational and Passive/Avoidant Leadership made major contributions to the predictor canonical variate; the dependent canonical variate was defined by both Intrinsic and Extrinsic Satisfaction. Canonical commonality analysis indicated that Transformational Leadership had the largest unique variance partition; the largest common variance partition was shared by Transformational and Passive/Avoidant. The analysis also indicated two variable suppressor effects. There was a moderate correlation between athletic directors' leadership styles and their job satisfaction; however, the directionality of the relationships of the variables in the leadership set with satisfaction was unexpected: (a) the relationship between transformational leadership and job satisfaction was found to be negative, and (b) the relationship between passive/avoidant leadership and job satisfaction was positive.
