Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is centered in computational electromagnetics with a focus on solving large-scale problems accurately in a timely fashion using first principle physics. Error control of the translation operator in 3-D is shown. A parallel implementation of the multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) was studied as far as parallel efficiency and scaling. The large-scale scattering program (LSSP), based on the ScaleME library, was used to solve ultra-large-scale problems including a 200(lambda) sphere with 20 million unknowns. As these large-scale problems were solved, techniques were developed to accurately estimate the memory requirements. Careful memory management is needed in order to solve these massive problems. The study of MLFMA in large-scale problems revealed significant errors that stemmed from inconsistencie s in constants used- by different parts of the algorithm. These were fixed to produce the most accurate data possible for large-scale surface scattering problems. Data was calculated on a missile-like target using both high frequency methods and MLFMA. This data was compared and analyzed to determine possible strategies to increase data acquisition speed and accuracy through multiple computation method hybridization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, step-by-step reference to the Nyström Method for solving Electromagnetic problems using integral equations Computational electromagnetics studies the numerical methods or techniques that solve electromagnetic problems by computer programming. Currently, there are mainly three numerical methods for electromagnetic problems: the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD), finite element method (FEM), and integral equation methods (IEMs). In the IEMs, the method of moments (MoM) is the most widely used method, but much attention is being paid to the Nyström method as another IEM, because it possesses some unique merits which the MoM lacks. This book focuses on that method—providing information on everything that students and professionals working in the field need to know. Written by the top researchers in electromagnetics, this complete reference book is a consolidation of advances made in the use of the Nyström method for solving electromagnetic integral equations. It begins by introducing the fundamentals of the electromagnetic theory and computational electromagnetics, before proceeding to illustrate the advantages unique to the Nyström method through rigorous worked out examples and equations. Key topics include quadrature rules, singularity treatment techniques, applications to conducting and penetrable media, multiphysics electromagnetic problems, time-domain integral equations, inverse scattering problems and incorporation with multilevel fast multiple algorithm. Systematically introduces the fundamental principles, equations, and advantages of the Nyström method for solving electromagnetic problems Features the unique benefits of using the Nyström method through numerical comparisons with other numerical and analytical methods Covers a broad range of application examples that will point the way for future research The Nystrom Method in Electromagnetics is ideal for graduate students, senior undergraduates, and researchers studying engineering electromagnetics, computational methods, and applied mathematics. Practicing engineers and other industry professionals working in engineering electromagnetics and engineering mathematics will also find it to be incredibly helpful.

Book excerpt: Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves is an outgrowth of several years of work. There have been no recent books on integral equation methods. There are books written on integral equations, but either they have been around for a while, or they were written by mathematicians. Much of the knowledge in integral equation methods still resides in journal papers. With this book, important relevant knowledge for integral equations are consolidated in one place and researchers need only read the pertinent chapters in this book to gain important knowledge needed for integral equation research. Also, learning the fundamentals of linear elastic wave theory does not require a quantum leap for electromagnetic practitioners. Integral equation methods have been around for several decades, and their introduction to electromagnetics has been due to the seminal works of Richmond and Harrington in the 1960s. There was a surge in the interest in this topic in the 1980s (notably the work of Wilton and his coworkers) due to increased computing power. The interest in this area was on the wane when it was demonstrated that differential equation methods, with their sparse matrices, can solve many problems more efficiently than integral equation methods. Recently, due to the advent of fast algorithms, there has been a revival in integral equation methods in electromagnetics. Much of our work in recent years has been in fast algorithms for integral equations, which prompted our interest in integral equation methods. While previously, only tens of thousands of unknowns could be solved by integral equation methods, now, tens of millions of unknowns can be solved with fast algorithms. This has prompted new enthusiasm in integral equation methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Electromagnetics is a young and growing discipline, expanding as a result of the steadily increasing demand for software for the design and analysis of electrical devices. This book introduces three of the most popular numerical methods for simulating electromagnetic fields: the finite difference method, the finite element method and the method of moments. In particular it focuses on how these methods are used to obtain valid approximations to the solutions of Maxwell's equations, using, for example, "staggered grids" and "edge elements." The main goal of the book is to make the reader aware of different sources of errors in numerical computations, and also to provide the tools for assessing the accuracy of numerical methods and their solutions. To reach this goal, convergence analysis, extrapolation, von Neumann stability analysis, and dispersion analysis are introduced and used frequently throughout the book. Another major goal of the book is to provide students with enough practical understanding of the methods so they are able to write simple programs on their own. To achieve this, the book contains several MATLAB programs and detailed description of practical issues such as assembly of finite element matrices and handling of unstructured meshes. Finally, the book aims at making the students well-aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the different methods, so they can decide which method is best for each problem. In this second edition, extensive computer projects are added as well as new material throughout. Reviews of previous edition: "The well-written monograph is devoted to students at the undergraduate level, but is also useful for practising engineers." (Zentralblatt MATH, 2007)

Book excerpt: This is the first truly comprehensive and most up-to-date handbook available on modern reflector antennas and feed sources for diversified space and ground applications. There has never been such an all-encompassing reflector handbook in print, and no currently available title offers coverage of such recent research developments. The Handbook consists of three volumes. Volume II focuses on feed sources. Reflector antennas are extraordinary devices that combine high gain with geometrical simplicity, and can operate in broad frequency bands. Their performance, however, depends on the electrical characteristics of the feed system with which they operate. This comprehensive volume provides you with a solid understanding of feed system theory, design, and analysis. Featuring chapters authored by experts in each aspect of feed systems, this book takes you from fundamental mathematical techniques, electrically small and large dual reflectors, feed geometry and telemetry, tracking and command antennas, and more. Throughout the book numerous examples are provided to guide you in the practical aspects of feed design.

Book excerpt: A triennial summation of the state of the art in radio science This book is the fourth in the modern series of triennial reviews prepared by the International Union of Radio Science to further communication and understanding of the status and future of radio science, both for those working in the field, and for those who want to know what is of current importance in this area. The International Union of Radio Science, URSI (Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale), has divided the subject of "Radio Science" according to the ten topics of the Scientific Commissions that make up URSI. This volume consists of thirty-eight original, peer-reviewed papers. Each paper provides a critical, in-depth review of–and, in many cases, tutorial on–advances and research that have been of significant importance within the area of interest of the Commissions during the past three to four years. Among the topics covered are: Electromagnetic metrology Fields and waves Signals and systems Electronics and photonics Electromagnetic noise and interference Wave propagation and remote sensing Ionospheric radio and propagation Waves in plasmas Radio astronomy Electromagnetics in biology and medicine With an included CD-ROM of the full book text, allowing the user to do full-text searching of all the papers, the Review of Radio Science: 1999—2002 is a resource of vital importance to anyone working in, or with an interest in, radio science.
