The Motivated Life shares a composite picture of the social and educational journey of a few urban male students and their step-by-step challenges as they reach for success in a fast track world. Shellie Sampson Jr., Ph.D., a former headmaster in an urban school, discusses the dynamics of goal-setting concepts while relying on the recent research of scholars as well as his own research conducted at an urban school in a major city. While sharing the results of a comprehensive study that included high school counselors, administrators, and African American male students, Dr. Sampson provides strategic information that will help others move their lives to more productive levels. He extensively covers urban trends that affect the lives of African American adolescents, goal-setting methods, and ways that young adults can build a motivated life. Society is filled with those who are coping with success in their own context, yet many are suffering from a devalued life of underachievement. The Motivated Life provides the encouragement that will enable all those who struggle with success to think, search, and create a new life for themselves.

Book Synopsis Psychological Perspectives on Musical Experiences and Skills by : Blanka Bogunović
Download or read book Psychological Perspectives on Musical Experiences and Skills written by Blanka Bogunović and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-20 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology of Music is a flourishing area of research in the Western Balkans. However, much of its findings and insights have remained relatively unknown outside the region. Psychological Perspectives on Musical Experiences and Skills features recent research from the Western Balkans, foregrounding its specific topics, methods, and influences, and bringing it into productive conversation with complementary research from Western Europe and further afield. The essays in this collection investigate the psychology of listening and performance and their relevance to music practice. Employing a range of research methodologies, they address divergent themes, from a cross-cultural understanding of aesthetic experiences and innovations to attract new audiences, to developmental perspectives on musical growth and the challenges of mastering performance skills. Authors reflect independently and collaboratively on how these psychological processes are shaped by the different traditions and geopolitical conditions inside and outside the Western Balkans. The result is a volume that emphasizes how musical experiences and practices happen not in isolation but in socio-cultural environments that contribute to their definition. This work will appeal to musicians, music educators, students, researchers, and psychologists with an interest in the psychology of music and exemplify ways forward in decolonizing academia.

Book Synopsis Urban Education by : Karen Symms Gallagher
Download or read book Urban Education written by Karen Symms Gallagher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many factors complicate the education of urban students. Among them have been issues related to population density; racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity; poverty; racism (individual and institutional); and funding levels. Although urban educators have been addressing these issues for decades, placing them under the umbrella of "urban education" and treating them as a specific area of practice and inquiry is relatively recent. Despite the wide adoption of the term a consensus about its meaning exists at only the broadest of levels. In short, urban education remains an ill-defined concept. This comprehensive volume addresses this definitional challenge and provides a 3-part conceptual model in which the achievement of equity for all -- regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity – is an ideal that is central to urban education. The model also posits that effective urban education requires attention to the three central issues that confronts all education systems (a) accountability of individuals and the institutions in which they work, (b) leadership, which occurs in multiple ways and at multiple levels, and (c) learning, which is the raison d'être of education. Just as a three-legged stool would fall if any one leg were weak or missing, each of these areas is essential to effective urban education and affects the others.
