Download or read book A Study of Four-jet Events and Search for Double Parton Interactions at [radical] written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinematic properties of four-jet events in p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.8 TeV are compared with the predictions of leading order quantum chromodynamics. We place an upper limit on the double parton scattering cross of [sigma][sub DP] 120 nb (95% C.L.) for partons with transverse momenta greater than 18 GeV/c. Defining the effective cross section [sigma][sub eff] through the equation of [sigma][sub eff] = [sigma][sub DP] = [sigma][sub dijet]/([sup 2]/[sigma][sub eff]), where [sigma][sub dijet] is the cross section for two-jets events, the limit [sigma][sub eff] 3.9 mb (95% C.L.) is also placed. Implications for physics at the SSC ([radical]s = 40 TeV) are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have searched for double parton scattering in the 4-jet channel with an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb−1, collected using the D{O} detector during 1994-1995 Fermilab Collider run at a center of mass energy ((square root)s) of 1.8 TeV. We present the preliminary observation of a statistically significant excess of signal.

Download or read book LHC Physics written by T. Binoth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the phenomenology of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, LHC Physics focuses on the first years of data collected at the LHC as well as the experimental and theoretical tools involved. It discusses a broad spectrum of experimental and theoretical activity in particle physics, from the searches for the Higgs boson and physics beyond the Standard Model to studies of quantum chromodynamics, the B-physics sector, and the properties of dense hadronic matter in heavy-ion collisions. Covering the topics in a pedagogical manner, the book introduces the theoretical and phenomenological framework of hadron collisions and presents the current theoretical models of frontier physics. It offers overviews of the main detector components, the initial calibration procedures, and search strategies. The authors also provide explicit examples of physics analyses drawn from the recently shut down Tevatron. In the coming years, or perhaps even sooner, the LHC experiments may reveal the Higgs boson and offer insight beyond the Standard Model. Written by some of the most prominent and active researchers in particle physics, this volume equips new physicists with the theory and tools needed to understand the various LHC experiments and prepares them to make future contributions to the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second open access volume of the handbook series deals with detectors, large experimental facilities and data handling, both for accelerator and non-accelerator based experiments. It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book Synopsis A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector by : Lesya Horyn
Download or read book A Search for Displaced Leptons in the ATLAS Detector written by Lesya Horyn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a search for long-lived particles decaying into displaced electrons and/or muons with large impact parameters. This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).
