Past studies have shown that as much as 70% of campus faculty and administrators believe decision making processes are ineffective and new approaches are needed. As many scholars point out, however, little empirical research exists and few studies have been conducted to advance the body of literature to better understand the perceptions held by both faculty and administrators in regards to governance, and of those, even fewer in the community college. The literature heavily suggests the way faculty and administrators form perceptions about governance is based on the organizational environment in which they function. Few in-depth studies have attempted to investigate the implications of an organization's environment, as it relates to shared governance. Most research in the area of governance focuses on internal and external forces of colleges, ways of altering structure, faculty participation in governance, student government, faculty senates, governing boards or subunits of these. It is clear that research has been conducted regarding the various afore mentioned areas, and the viewpoints of governance has been described through many lens; faculty, administrator and board of trustees to name a few. However, in areas regarding faculty and administrative perceptions and, how they interact to alter governance, few studies have been conducted. Thus, this study's purpose was to explore institutional governance in a public two-year community college, provide a more comprehensive understanding of institutional governance, and investigate the perceptions of faculty and administrators within this sector. The results provided valuable insight to the site institution regarding participants' perceptions of institutional structure, supervisory relationships, and shared governance. The findings of the study indicated that faculty and administrators significantly differ in these aspects of their organization, and that an environment of trust and cooperation in a community of equals is not the norm. Data analysis provided further evidence of a strong correlation and a significant relationship between institutional structure and shared governance, revealing that faculty and administrators perceptions of shared governance were strongly related to their perception of institutional structure.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between selected demographic and educational variables of faculty members employed in the Alabama Community College System and their impact on job satisfaction. The variables included in the study are the demographic variables of age, gender, ethnicity, salary, and degree status, along with the institutional variables of academic ability of students, advancement in technology, faculty workload, tenure, co-worker relationship, administrative governance and support, and professional growth opportunities. This study was conducted to educate college administrators regarding faculty morale and to provide a means of communication between administrators and faculty to address faculty concerns, thus leading to a more stable learning environment for students. A survey research design was used to collect and analyze the data from faculty members at 10 community colleges within the state of Alabama. An instrument designed by the researcher entitled the Howton Community College Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey was used to collect the data using SurveyGizmo.com. The instrument was validated by a panel of experts and a pilot study determined the reliability coefficient to be .786. The data were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics, factoral analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings of the study indicated a four scale structure for the created instrument which consisted of the following components: 1) administrative support and its affect on the personal life of faculty members; 2) obtaining tenure and the evaluation process; 3) technology in the classroom and training through professional development activities; and 4) relationship among colleagues. Results from ANOVA show that there were no between or within group differences among mean scores with regard to age, sex, ethnicity, salary, tenure status, or degree status. Examining measures of central tendencies revealed that over 20% of faculty members responded negatively with regard to satisfaction in the areas of academic ability of students, administrative support, professional development opportunities, and advancements in technology. However, 87% of faculty members responded favorably regarding their overall job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: Studies have sounded the alarm concerning the impending void of leadership that community colleges will face in the 21st century. One concern is that the pool of applicants from the traditional leadership pathway of existing community college faculty members has decreased dramatically in the past decade. This study explored faculty perceptions of the administration positions in California community colleges and their desire and willingness to step into these roles. The study also looked at the impact of the underlying issues associated with the motivation for life-work balance on the likelihood of community college faculty to apply for administrative positions. This study was conducted through a mixed-method design involving quantitative and qualitative data collection. A survey was sent to all tenured and tenure-track faculty at community colleges in San Diego County, California. There were 341 participants who completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 22.7%. The first research question sought to explore faculty's perceptions of the administration positions at California community colleges and their desire to step into those roles. Three themes emerged in analyzing the responses of why faculty consider going into administration: (1) improve the system or college; make a difference, (2) personal growth and challenge, and (3) salary and/or benefits. In addition, five main themes emerged from reasons why faculty would not consider jumping into administration: (1) workload, stress, and lack of flexibility for family time; (2) lack of job satisfaction due to bureaucracy, incompetent colleagues, or system; (3) love of teaching and profession; (4) lack of job security; and (5) going to the "dark" side. The second research question sought to explore to what extent motivators for life-work balance affect the decision of California community college faculty to leap to administration. The motivators for life-work balance do influence the faculty in the decision to jump into administration; however, there was no significant difference between Generation X and the baby boom generation's belief in achieving the balance. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gather participant/ campus data, and to measure morale and teaching faculty participation in institutional governance on the 107 California public community college campuses to determine if collective bargaining faculty have statistically higher or lower morale and greater or lesser participation in institutional governance. In doing this, it was also an objective to determine whether morale and participation were significantly related to one another, or to participant/ campus data, or to collective bargaining in order to originate a theory which would predict the establishment of collective bargaining. The Purdue Teacher Opinionaire was used to measure morale and the Questionnaire on Faculty Participation in College and University Government was used to measure faculty participation in institutional governance. The results were compiled and analyzed using two one-way ANOVAs, Chi-Square Analysis, and Multiple Regression. With a random sample of 424 full-time teaching faculty and a return of 297 questionnaires, or 70.05 percent, the following conclusions were reached using the .05 significance level: 1. Morale of collective bargaining teaching faculty was reported as less than those who were not under collective bargaining, although the difference was not statistically significant, so no conclusions could be drawn. 2. Faculty participation was reported as slightly higher by faculty who had entered into a collective bargaining contract, although the difference was not statistically significant, so no conclusions could be drawn. 3. There was a moderate relationship between morale and participation in governance, and although there was a higher correlation for collective bargaining respondents, the difference was not statistically significant and no conclusions could be drawn. 4. The teaching areas of community service and developmental/remedial/ABE were related to collective bargaining. Both of these results may have been factors of location, however, rather than causal. The multi-campus districts were much more likely to be organized for collective bargaining. 5. No predictive theory was warranted regarding collective bargaining since the relationship between morale and participation in governance was statistically nonsignificant. The conclusions of this study did not indicate any clear benefits to organizing for collective bargaining because the data were statistically non-significant.
