Book Synopsis A Study of Concrete and Formal Operations in School Mathematics by : Kevin Francis Collis
Download or read book A Study of Concrete and Formal Operations in School Mathematics written by Kevin Francis Collis and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents an interpretation of Piaget's formulation of the concrete-operational to formal-operational level of the cognitive functioning continuum by using material from elementary mathematics. The proposal is made that concrete- operational level reasoning can be distinguished from formal operational by its dependence on empirical cues, the movement up the continuum being marked by a lessening dependence upon empirical support. Reality for a child in this context is seen as being bound up with the notion of closure or uniqueness which in its turn is related to both the kind of elements operated upon, and the number and type of operations involved.

Book Synopsis A Review of Research in Mathematical Education by :
Download or read book A Review of Research in Mathematical Education written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of a review prepared for the Cockcroft Committee of Inquiry into the Teaching of Mathematics in Schools in Great Britain, and its main conclusions were incorporated in their report, "Mathematics Counts." Its aim was to display the main outcomes of research relevant to the teaching and learning of mathematics. The introduction of this first volume was intended to highlight some of the main points of the review, as well as to put it into the context of questions currently of concern. The 14 chapters of the document synthesize the research on the following particular topics in mathematics education: (1) the mathematics curriculum; (2) background psychology; (3) stages of general intellectual development; (4) skills, concepts, and strategies; (5) the teaching of facts and skills; (6) understanding of concepts in specific topic areas; (7) teaching methods; (8) process aspects; (9) attitudes; (10) individual differences; (11) language; (12) evaluation and assessment; (13) calculators and computers; and (14) using research. A supplement has been added to take account of work published since the original review was compiled. (MNS)

Download or read book Early Algebra written by Carolyn Kieran and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of the state of the art on research in early algebra traces the evolution of a relatively new field of research and teaching practice. With its focus on the younger student, aged from about 6 years up to 12 years, this volume reveals the nature of the research that has been carried out in early algebra and how it has shaped the growth of the field. The survey, in presenting examples drawn from the steadily growing research base, highlights both the nature of algebraic thinking and the ways in which this thinking is being developed in the primary and early middle school student. Mathematical relations, patterns, and arithmetical structures lie at the heart of early algebraic activity, with processes such as noticing, conjecturing, generalizing, representing, justifying, and communicating being central to students’ engagement.
