Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins by revealing new ideas about how and why embolic stroke and heart attacks share a common history involving clot formation. The only distinction between the two diseases is where the clot finally stops. If in the brain, it results in a stroke; if in the heart muscle, a heart attack. Thus the first portion of the book (Chapters 1-4) documents how the mechanism of clot formation was studied through the eyes of a lifelong research scientist who was not a stroke expert, but a stroke survivor. Described in those chapters are entirely new ideas about how and why clots form, and how to prevent them. While my four years of stroke investigation (so far) was unfolding, I simultaneously carefully recorded my daily observations as I experienced an embolic shower-type of stroke. My goal was to assemble a guide for all stroke victims alerting them what to expect, and also my evaluation of a number of treatment modalities, nutrients/supplements etc., designed to save money and frustration to newcomers to the stroke world as well as the initiated. The big difference between this and other accounts of embolic stroke is that in this case it is framed in the context of an aging body. If you do not already know, this distinction is important since there is a fine line between the effects of aging and the effects of stroke. The upshot of this book is to offer my evidence to the reader that stroke and heart attack are largely avoidable diseases. My thought is, if the reader thinks what I say makes sense, they can take the recommended action starting today to minimize their risk. And it is so incredibly simple and virtually cost-free.

Book excerpt: "Transformative...[Taylor's] experience...will shatter [your] own perception of the world."—ABC News The astonishing New York Times bestseller that chronicles how a brain scientist's own stroke led to enlightenment On December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven- year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist experienced a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. As she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life-all within four hours-Taylor alternated between the euphoria of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace, and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized she was having a stroke and enabled her to seek help before she was completely lost. It would take her eight years to fully recover. For Taylor, her stroke was a blessing and a revelation. It taught her that by "stepping to the right" of our left brains, we can uncover feelings of well-being that are often sidelined by "brain chatter." Reaching wide audiences through her talk at the Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference and her appearance on Oprah's online Soul Series, Taylor provides a valuable recovery guide for those touched by brain injury and an inspiring testimony that inner peace is accessible to anyone.

On New Year's Eve, 2002, an unbelievable series of events occurred: a brain aneurysm, a devastating car accident, a body broken and a mind shattered. A life was changed forever. Several weeks later Sarah woke from a coma with no idea of who or where she was or what had happened. But thanks to an extraordinary quirk of the brain, Sarah could remember neuroscience. In fact, when doctors came to visit her during the many months she spent in hospital, Sarah assumed they were consulting her as the brain expert, not attending to her as a patient. MY LUCKY STROKE is an extraordinary memoir, full of life and insight, humour and drama, a story about rebuilding a life from square one that you won't easily forget.

Katie had no worries. But, unexpectedly near the end of her kindergarten school year, her mother suffered a life-altering stroke. Katies mom transitioned from a happy-go-lucky mom to one who lost her ability to walk and talk. For the first time in her life, Katie was really scared and worried what was going to happen to her mother. Although Katie lost her old mom, she gained a new mom who turned out to be very different. Life was altered from what it once was, but it wasnt so bad because through it all, Katie was lucky to have her mom. A book for children, Mom Had a Stroke explores how one little girl felt as she learned to accept and adjust to a new mom with physical challenges, and how, over time, they began to experience happiness as a family again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four decades - and most especially in recent years as issues of identity continue to play out across the public stage - identity theory has developed into one of the most fascinating and active research programs within the spheres of sociological social psychology. Having emerged out of a landmark 2014 national conference that sought to integrate various research programs and to honor the groundbreaking work of Dr. Peter J. Burke, New Directions in Identity Theory and Research brings together the pioneers, scholars, and researchers of identity theory as they present the important theoretical, methodological, and substantive work in identity theory today. Edited by Dr. Jan E. Stets and Dr. Richard T. Serpe, this volume asserts that researchers and scholars can no longer rely on using samples, measures, concepts, and mechanisms that limit the overall advancement of identity theory and research. Instead, as Stets and Serpe contend in their introductory chapter, "Researchers constantly must try out new ideas, test the ideas with more refined measures, use samples that are representative yet racially and ethnically diverse, and employ methods (perhaps mixed methods) that capture the different dimensions of the identity process." This book is the truest testament to this idea. In New Directions in Identity Theory and Research, Stets, Serpe, and contributing authors urge readers to think outside the box by providing the road map necessary to guide future work and thought in this emerging field.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the relationship between child and parent develops in Japan, from the earliest point in a child’s life, through the transition from family to the wider world, first to playschools and then schools. It shows how touch and physical contact are important for engendering intimacy and feeling, and how intimacy and feeling continue even when physical contact lessens. It relates the position in Japan to theoretical writing, in both Japan and the West, on body, mind, intimacy and feeling, and compares the position in Japan to practices elsewhere. Overall, the book makes a significant contribution to the study of and theories on body practices, and to debates on the processes of socialisation in Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These highly personal essays from a range of academic settings explore the palpable moments of discomfort, disempowerment, and/or enlightenment that emerge when we discard the fiction that the teacher has no body. Visible and/or invisible, the body can transform both the teacher's experience and classroom dynamics. When students think the teacher's body is clearly marked by ethnicity, race, disability, size, gender, sexuality, illness, age, pregnancy, class, linguistic and geographic origins, or some combination of these, both the mode and the content of education can change. Other, less visible aspects of a teacher's body, such as depression or a history of sexual assault, can have an equally powerful impact on how we teach and learn. The collection anatomizes these moments of embodied pedagogy as unexpected teaching opportunities and examines their apparent impact on teacher-student educational dynamics of power, authority, desire, friendship, open-mindedness, and resistance.
