Book excerpt: The classical difficulties in synthesizing the velocity fluctuation field from turbulence data are discussed, including the closure problem, consequent non-uniqueness of the representation, and the loss of information due to averaging. In the present work the inverse approach is used, that is, several analytical models of the velocity fluctuation field, suggested by the flow visualization data, are compared with the existing space-time correlation function data. This approach effectively eliminates the closure problem, but due to its inductive nature, causes some difficulties in disclosing the underlying physics. Using the most promising model, the turbulent flow field has been decomposed, by modeling the velocity fluctations as non-deterministic travelling waves with random phase angles. It is found that this phenomenological model correctly represents the observed trends in the narrow band (frequency filtered) correlation function data. Next, the power spectral density function is identified as the appropriate frequency weighting function with which to synthesize the broad band (unfiltered) from the narrow band correlation functions. The functional form of the power spectral density function which agrees with the observed data is taken to be the superposition of a strong, unorganized background turbulence (Markoff noise) and an organized turbulent structure. The derived broad band correlation functions agree very well with a wide range of turbulent correlation function measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fully updated fourth edition, this leading text in its field is an exhaustive monograph on turbulence in fluids in its theoretical and applied aspects. The authors examine a number of advanced developments using mathematical spectral methods, direct-numerical simulations, and large-eddy simulations. The book remains a hugely important contribution to the literature on a topic of great importance for engineering and environmental applications, and presents a very detailed presentation of the field.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the workshop on Statistical The ories and Computational Approaches to Turbulence: Modern Perspectives and Applications to Global-Scale Flows, held October 10-13, 2001, at Nagoya Uni versity, Nagoya, Japan. Because of recent developments in computational capabilities, the compu tational approach is showing the potential to resolve a much wider range of length and time scales in turbulent physical systems. Nevertheless, even with the largest supercomputers of the foreseeable future, development of adequate modeling techniques for at least some scales of motion will be necessary for practical computations of important problems such as weather forecasting and the prediction and control of global pollution. The more powerful the available machines become, the more demand there will be for precise prediction of the systems. This means that more precise and reliable knowledge of the underlying dynamics will become important, and that more efficient and precise numerical methods best adapted to the new generation of computers will be necessary. The understanding of the nature of unresolved scales then will playa key role in the modeling of turbulent motion. The challenge to turbulence theory here is to elucidate the physics or dynamics of those scales, in particular their sta tistical aspects, and thereby develop models on sound bases to reduce modeling ambiguity. The challenge to the computational method is to develop efficient algorithms suitable for the problems, the machines, and the developed models.

Book excerpt: Since the inaugural symposium at the Pennsylvania State University in 1977, the venues for the series of biennial symposia on turbulent shear flows have alternated between the USA and Europe. For the Sixth Symposium, the first to be held in France, the city of Toulouse proved a natura] choice, being a centre for the aerospace industry, meteorological research and higher education. The meeting was hosted by the Paul Sabatier University on the southern perimeter of the city, and there nearly 300 workers in the field of turbulence converged to pronounce upon, debate and absorb the current issues in turbulent shear flows and to enjoy the unfailing September sunshine. The meeting had attracted more than 200 offers of papers from which just over 100 full papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums could be accommodated. The present volume contains 28 of the original symposium presentations selected by the editors. Each contribution has been revised by its authors - sometimes quite extensively -in the light of the oral presentation. It is our hope that the selection provides a substantial statement of permanent interest on current research in the five areas covered by this book, i.e. fundamentals and closures, scalar transport and geophysical flows, aerodynamic flows, complex flows, and numerical simulations.

Book excerpt: This book is a unique opportunity to present in a single volume information that is needed for both experimentalists, theoreticians and computationalists for the detection, analysis, prediction and control of eddy structures in turbulent shear flows. Major identification techniques of Eddy Structures in Turbulent Shear Flows are presented together with applications to vortex dynamics, turbulence management and flow control, for experimental and numerical applications with new prediction methods: Eduction Schemes, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Stochastic Estimation, Pattern Recognition Analysis, Wavelet Transform. Illustrations of the use of the different methods are given.
