The manuscript first underscores the physiologic bases of EEG and the characteristics and usage of electrodes. Discussions focus on basic elements of nerve cell function, general nature of EEG, implantation of intracerebral electrodes, and affixing surface electrodes. The text then examines noise or artifact, electronic recording systems, and interpretation and analysis of EEG. Electronic principles of special relevance, electrode configurations, and electroencephalographs are discussed. The book takes a look at EEG correlates of physiologic and pathologic changes, as well as maturation of EEG, behavioral correlates, and internal influences. Experimentally produced brain diseases and naturally occurring brain diseases are also elaborated. The manuscript is a valuable reference for readers interested in electroencephalography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the theoretical and practical basics of veterinary neuropathology, this concise and well illustrated book is an essential basic diagnostic guide for pathologists, neurologists and diagnostic imaging specialists. It presents readers with strategies to deal with neuropathological problems, showing how to interpret gross and histological lesions using a systematic approach based on pattern recognition. It starts with an overview of the general principles of neuroanatomy, neuropathological techniques, basic tissue reaction patterns, and recognition of major lesion patterns. The book goes on to cover vascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, trauma, congenital malformations, metabolic-toxic diseases, neoplasia and degenerative diseases mainly of the central nervous system. In the respective chapters pathologists can quickly find information to support their daily diagnostic workup for both small and large domestic species. Based on the authors’ extensive diagnostic and post graduate teaching experience as well as the inclusion of MRI as it relates to neuropathology, this book also offers a comprehensive but basic analysis of veterinary neuropathology that neurologists and other MRI users will find very useful. An essential manual for daily diagnostic work Richly illustrated with high quality colour gross, histological and MRI images Includes a section on the function and use of MRI (by Johann Lang, DECVDI) Accompanied by a website presenting MRI sequences for interpretation and correlation with neuropathological findings edited by Johann Lang (University of Bern, Switzerland) and Eric Wiesner (University of California, Davis, USA) www.wiley.com/go/vandevelde/veterinaryneuropathology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Animal Experimentation, Volume III, compiles methods of animal experimentation in a variety of fields so that the researcher might have a reference that would allow him to incorporate other techniques in his research studies. The methods described represent only the most efficient ways known to date for using animals to gain research information. They are not, however, ""standard methods"" for research in which each experiment seeks or confirms new information by another means. The largest portion of this volume is devoted to behavioral science because of the growing importance of this field in two respects. First, it is an important consideration in all experiments in which animals are used repeatedly. Second, the use of higher animals in comparative behavioral research offers much toward the solution of disease problems of man related to behavior and perhaps even clues to his social interactions. A chapter by an author with extensive experiences with dolphins helps us judge how this animal may be used, and warns of the many problems incurred in research using any of the marine mammals. Other chapters cover dental research on animals, fetal surgery and physiological measurements in very young animals, and microsurgery.

The book first offers information on neuropathology, neuroanatomy, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The domesticated animals that have CSF include horses, dogs, pigs, cats, rabbits, and cattle. The text then elaborates on neurologic diseases of apes and monkeys. Discussions focus on confluent leucoencephalosis and perivascular myelosis, encephalopathies and dysenteric syndromes, meningitis, epilepsies, tuberculosis, cerebellar atrophy and experimental manganese poisoning, and choreic syndrome in baboons with corticostriate encephalitis. The publication examines the diseases of the skeletal muscle and hypophysis, including general reactions of muscles to injuries, congenital defects, muscular dystrophies, changes in muscle associated with specific diseases, and tumor. The manuscript also takes a look at inherited diseases and congenital anomalies, protozoan and bacterial infections, and demyelinating or myelinoclastic diseases. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dealing with stance and motion was planned in June 1986 at a meeting held in Moscow and Leningrad between a group of Soviet and French scientists interested in motor control. This meeting took place in the framework of an exchange program between the USSR Academy of Seiences and the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. It was very successful event and was greatly appreciated by all those who attended it. Several participants put forward the proposal that the possibility of publishing a book was worth exploring. What were the reasons for publishing a book on stance and motion ? The interest aroused in the participants by each others contributions was not a sufficiently decisive argument. It was feit, however, that a large proportion of the orginal material presented at the meeting, especially in the field of posture and locomotion but also on other aspects covered by the book could be presented in a summarized form which should appeal to a larger audience because the facts and hypotheses they contained especially those from the Soviet participants, were not very familiar among international circles, and that many scientists would appreciate having a single volume containing a survey ofthe current state of research in this field. This was also the opinion of Plenum Press, who agreed to publish the book. Each participant at the meeting submitted a paper which was examined by two referees before being accepted.
