Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 1 Georgia's history has heretofore existed, at least for the reading public, only in detached fragments, or in meager chronological outlines. This statement is not intended to convey any disparagement. The histories written by McCall, Stevens, and Jones, are works of surpassing value and, for the periods covered, are exhaustive of detail. But these histories deal only with the State's Colonial and Revolutionary epochs. Isaac W. Avery has made a luminous contribution to the history of the Civil war, dealing, however, principally with political events connected with the picturesque personality of Georgia's war governor. Lawton B. Evans has written a splendid epitome of the states political history, while U. B. Phillips, of the University of Michigan, and R. P. Brooks, of the University of Georgia, have each treated the subject with great ability from economic and sociological points of view. Gen. Clement A. Evans, and Prof. Joseph T. Derry, have each discussed the subject in its military aspects. The necessity for a work, therefore, weaving together in one continuous narrative the complete history of Georgia has long been felt. It was the purpose of Col. Charles C. Jones, Jr., the states greatest historian, to bring his masterful work down to the present time, but ere his stupendous task was half finished, death sheathed his shining pen forever. The present work is not designed to complete the unfinished task of Colonel Jones. That glorious Georgian will always occupy a niche in the Temple of Fame peculiarly his own. This work is intended only as a sincere and earnest contribution to the state's political annals, to bridge the gaps which have heretofore existed, and to connect the more or less familiar story of Georgia's remote historic past with the narrative of recent happenings. It is to be regretted that important records no longer exist on which to base an accurate account of the period immediately subsequent to the Revolution. This is due to the fact that when Georgia was overrun by the British, some of her most precious documents suffered destruction. The loss is an irreparable one, since the period in question was a period of beginnings, marked by organic changes. Original sources of information are also lacking for other periods; all of which emphasizes how important it is for the state to create a Department of Archives, in which to safeguard its immortal things. The necessity for providing quarters in which to house current volumes often relegates the old records to dark nooks and corners, where the agencies of decay make sad havoc of priceless values. New England's dearest care for generations has been her sacred memorials. Georgia's history is not one whit less glorious. Georgia may well felicitate herself 'upon the high standard ever maintained by the bench and bar of the state and is signally favored in claiming at the present time as chief justice of the Supreme Court the commonwealth the eminent lawyer and jurist whose name initiates this paragraph, and who by his character and services has signally honored his native state. The following brief review of his ancestral history and personal career can not fail of enduring value as a concrete addition and integral part of the annals of Georgia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 5 Marshall Wellborn Dunn was educated in country schools, which he attended until reaching the age of sixteen, at which time he left school In order to assist his father in the management of the plantation, of which he later took entire charge, residing on it until 1909. He then organized a partner ship with W. T. Parish, under the style of Dunn Parish, and founded a general mercantile and supply house, which is now one of the leading busi ness concerns in Thomson, the enterprise having been successful. Mr. Dunn has long taken a strong interest in educational matters, and his fellow citizens, knowing him to be a good man to entrust with school matters, in 1899 elected him a member of the board of education. After serving efficiently for several years, in 1904 he was elected as county school superintendent, which position he still retains. He took a leading part in the erection of the fine new high school, completed in 1911, and which cost $20, 000. In putting through this project to its final consummation, he had to work hard to overcome the strong opposition against it on the part of many citizens who objected to the city's incurring so great an expense, but persuasion and argument finally prevailed, and it would now be hard to find anyone who does not take a pride in this magnificent and commodious building, or who would wish to go back to the old condition of things. Stewart became a member of the firm, the style of which was then changed to J. H. Almand Son & Company. In a few years this enterprise had taken leading rank among the merchandise stores of Rockdale County. Mr. Almand was in active business as a merchant for more than twenty years. In September, 1892, he established the first bank at Conyers, a private institution, established more as a convenience to the customers and friends of Mr. Almand than with a view of profit. The bank continued in a flourishing condition, and in 1901 a state charter was taken out, and it has since been known as the Bank of Rockdale. Under the charter it started with a capital of $25,000, and in 1905 the capital stock was increased from the earnings of the bank to $50,000, besides a good surplus of undivided profits. The first president was John H. Almand. On the 11th of January, 1916, Mr. Almand retired from the banking business, after over twenty-three years spent in its service. Probably of still more importance than this bank has been Mr. Almand's enterprise in connection with the Millstead Manufacturing Company of Conyers. He was one of the organizers and is one of the largest stockholders and a director in this company, which was incorporated in 1908 with a capital stock of $250,000. The capital has since been increased with the rapid growth of the business. The facilities of the company are employed for the manufacture of heavy duck cloth. A splendid modern factory was erected at the outskirts of Conyers, and at the present time its equipment comprises 10,000 spindles and 104 duck looms. The product is heavy duck, in varying widths to six feet or more, and about 1,000 individuals find employment and depend upon this business for their livelihood. The...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Standard History of Georgia and Georgians, Vol. 2 Over a century ago, a bitter warfare raged between the Catawba and Cherokee tribes of Indians. In one of those frequent and bold excursions common among the wild inhabitants of the forest, the son Of the principal Cherokee chief surprised and captured a large town belonging to the Catawba tribe. Among the captives was the daughter of the first chief of the Catawbas, named Hiawassee, or the beautiful fawn. A young hero of the Cherokees, whose name was Notley, which means the daring horseman, instantly became captivated with the majestic beauty and graceful manners of the royal captive; and was overwhelmed with delight upon finding his love reciprocated by the object of his heart's adoration. With two attendants, he presented himself before the Ca tawba warrior, who happened to be absent when his town was taken by the Cherokees. To this stern old chief he gave a brief statement of recent occurrences, and then besought his daughter in marriage. The proud Catawba, lifting high his war-club, knitting his brow, and curling his lips with scorn, declared that as the Catawbas drank the waters of the East, and the Cherokees the waters Of the West, when this insolent and daring lad could find where these waters united, then and not till then might the hateful Cherokee mate with the daughter of the great Catawba. Discouraged but not despairing, Notley turned away from the presence of the proud and 'unfeeling father of the beautiful Hiawassee, and resolved to search for a union of the eastern with the western waters, which was then considered an impossibility. Ascending the pinnacle of the great chain of the Alleghanies, more commonly called the Elue Ridge, which is known to divide the waters of the Atlantic from those of the great West, and traversing its devi ous and Winding courses, he could frequently find springs running each way, and having their source within a few paces of each other; but this was not what he desired. The manuscript was read and criticised by a number of public school and normal school teachers of the state, and I am led to hope from their opinions that a text constructed along the above lines will prove acceptable to teachers and pupils. Where the book is used for very young people, I suggest the omission of Chapters V, XI, XIV, XIX, XXV. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
