Book excerpt: The Tennessee Centennial Exposition, which celebrated Tennessee's 100th year of statehood, opened May 1, 1897, at Nashville's Centennial Park and enjoyed tremendous success during its six-month run. Citizens from all over Tennessee--and the nation--honored the state's history by sponsoring exhibits at the event, and thousands of visitors flocked to the fairgrounds each day to experience the excitement it offered. In this fascinating collection of over 200 images combined with informative, well-researched text, author Bobby Lawrence takes us on a journey into the past to relive the optimism and wonders of another time. Take a relaxing gondola ride on one of the park's four lakes or stroll the 200-acre grounds and visit a variety of buildings and exhibits featuring everything from ancient artifacts to scientific inventions, from on-site farms to international restaurants, from the thrilling Vanity Fair, a midway attraction comparable to today's amusement parks, to one of the first large displays of electric lights.

Book Synopsis Nashville in the 1890s by : William Waller
Download or read book Nashville in the 1890s written by William Waller and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from first-hand accounts and oral histories collected and stored at Vanderbilt University as well as newspapers and other local history sources, this collection is an invaluable look at the “Gay Nineties” in Nashvillians’ own words. It is, however, not a complete insight into Nashville in the 1890s. Readers should take note that the book focuses almost exclusively on the experiences and worldviews of white Nashvillians. These stories have incredible value for local historians and anyone interested in Nashville history, but the book’s failure to deal with race—as evidenced by Waller’s belief that “the social order was thought to be providential,” which was clearly not true for Nashville’s Black residents who struggled against the unjust systems designed to oppress them—is a grave shortcoming.

Book excerpt: Few places in the country can boast the extraordinary historic architecture possessed by Nashville, a remarkable hybrid city integrating both New South commerce with Old South charm and traditions. During the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, many affluent families, including governors, statesmen, and presidents, built luxurious homes in many different revival styles of architecture such as Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival. Since that time, residents and countless visitors to Nashville alike have enjoyed their dramatic and imposing exteriors. In this volume, you are given a special opportunity to walk into these homes and explore their fascinating interiors as they appeared from 1866 to 1920. Nashville Interiors: 1866 to 1920 provides valuable insight into the tastes and needs of the families who lived in these historic homes, from their formal parlors and gardens to their private dining rooms and bedrooms. Within these pages, the capital city's most famous country homes, such as Belmont Mansion, Belle Meade Plantation, and the Hermitage, and a wide assortment of city dwellings, boarding schools, hotels, and businesses again open their doors, allowing today's viewer a rare, intimate glimpse into their past.

Book Synopsis The Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 1850-1963 by : Kincaid A. Herr
Download or read book The Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 1850-1963 written by Kincaid A. Herr and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was founded in 1850, it was the first major railroad in the west, and the only one headquartered in Kentucky. In the twentieth century, the L&N grew into one of the nation's major rail systems, reaching from the Great Lakes to the Ohio River Valley and down to Florida and the Gulf Coast. Kincaid Herr worked for the Louisville and Nashville for more than forty years, and this book originated as a series of articles that he wrote for L&N Magazine between 1939 and 1942. After various printings through the 1940s and '50s, this fifth edition, completely revised and updated, was released in 1964. The 1950s saw the reluctant abandonment of the old steam engine (the L&N was a major coal-carrying railroad) in favor of the diesel. During the late 1950s and early 60s, the railroad experienced significant expansion in the South, where the economy was being fueled by new industry. Coal, automobiles, mail, and passengers all counted on the L&N to get them around the region. Herr traces the development and expansion of the L&N system over a century and profiles important company figures, such as longtime L&N president Milton Smith. Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan and railroad bandit Morris Slater also find their place in this entertaining history. Four appendices on topics ranging from the materials used to build trains to passenger equipment to motive power round out the complete, but accessible, account. Even after all these years, this volume remains the concise, illustrated history of "The Old Reliable" for its many fans around the world.
