Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous B/w Illustrations & Maps Description: The articles selected for this anthology are meant to act as a guide to the changing ramifications and some major foci of Indian archaeology up to the mid-eighties. The subsequent publications are still too close to us for a clear historical assessment. Although published some eighteen years later than the first volume, compiled with the same intention this is a definitive 'source-book' in its own right and will further help people to turn to some major studies which have become over the years difficult of access. Like archaeology elsewhere, Indian archaeology too is getting increasingly complex and perhaps polarized. In a sense the articles incorporated in the present volume serve as a reminder of some of the issues which confronted Indian archaeology before the current phase of complexity and politicization. The relevant literature, right from the beginning of Indian archaeological studies, was carefully scrutinized in its entirety before the present volume was compiled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology" is a significant reference work on archaeology in India. It is an authoritative work of permanent value in which the knowledge and expertise of Indian archaeologists from the Archaeological Survey of India, universities and other institutes have been pooled together under the editorship of the late A. Ghosh, former Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. The "Encyclopaedia" has been planned in an ambitious manner; it is not merely an alphabetical listing of entries with sketchy information on topics. Volume 1, which deals with certain broad subjects relating to Indian Archaeology, is divided into twenty chapters, alphabetically arranged. Each chapter is further divided into sections and subsections containing independent and self-contained essays. For example, in the chapter on "Cultures," detailed information can be found on various cultures in India; the chapter on "Basis of dating" contains articles on archaeological dating, archaeomagnetic dating, 14C radio-carbon dating, numismatic dating, palaeographic and epigraphic dating, thermoluminescent dating, etc. For those interested in getting further information on the subjects and in looking into the original sources and references, each entry also carries an exhaustive bibliography. Volume II is the Gazetteer. It contains basic data and information on all the explored and excavated sites in India along with reference to published reports and/or notices on each.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 31 B/w Illustrations and 9 Maps Description: This is the first of a projected three volumes. It has been compiled with two aims: (1) to indicate the development of archaeological research in India and the emergence of a specifically Indian approach to archaeology and prehistory; (2) and to provide a source-book for students both in India and outside, which will give a selection and excerpts from the significant writings on Indian archaeology to date. As many of the articles are from widely scattered sources and consequently difficult to obtain, it is hoped that students will find the selection useful. The basic themes of this volume are: the background to Indian archaeology, including some of the earliest and most important writings, some examples of the early methods employed; and sections on the relevance of geography and climate for early man, and the cultures of early man himself; finally there is a section on the domestication of plants and animals. The selection is based on careful research and planning and without doubt this is the first work of its kind in Indian archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniélou's powerful rebuttal to the conventional view of India's history, which calls for a massive reevaluation of the history of humanity • Explores historical occurrences from each major time period starting with the first appearance of man 30,000 years ago • Couples the clarity and perspective of an outsider with the unique and specific knowledge of an insider • By the internationally recognized Hindu scholar and translator of The Complete Kama Sutra (200,000 copies sold) Alain Daniélou approaches the history of India from a new perspective--as a sympathetic outsider, yet one who understands the deepest workings of the culture. Because the history of India covers such a long span of time, rather than try to create an exhaustive chronology of dates and events, Daniélou instead focuses on enduring institutions that remain constant despite the ephemeral historical events that occur. His selections, synthesis, and narration create a thoroughly engaging and readable journey through time, with a level of detail and comprehensiveness that is truly a marvel. Because of the continuity of its civilization, its unique social system, and the tremendous diversity of cultures, races, languages, and religions that exist in its vast territory, India is like a history museum. Its diverse groups maintained their separate identities and never fully supplanted the culture and knowledge of their predecessors. Even today one may encounter in India primitive Stone Age people whose technology has remained at what is considered prehistoric levels. Thus Daniélou's examination of India reveals not only the diversity and historical events and trends of that country, but also the history of all mankind. Through Daniélou's history of India we learn from whence we came, what we have discovered over the years in the fields of science, arts, technology, social structures, religions, and philosophical concepts, and what the future may hold for us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost as soon as the last shot was fired in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the battlefield became an archaeological site. For many years afterward, as fascination with the famed 1876 fight intensified, visitors to the area scavenged the many relics left behind. It took decades, however, before researchers began to tease information from the battle’s debris—and the new field of battlefield archaeology began to emerge. In Uncovering History, renowned archaeologist Douglas D. Scott offers a comprehensive account of investigations at the Little Bighorn, from the earliest collecting efforts to early-twentieth-century findings. Artifacts found on a field of battle and removed without context or care are just relics, curiosities that arouse romantic imagination. When investigators recover these artifacts in a systematic manner, though, these items become a valuable source of clues for reconstructing battle events. Here Scott describes how detailed analysis of specific detritus at the Little Bighorn—such as cartridge cases, fragments of camping equipment and clothing, and skeletal remains—have allowed researchers to reconstruct and reinterpret the history of the conflict. In the process, he demonstrates how major advances in technology, such as metal detection and GPS, have expanded the capabilities of battlefield archaeologists to uncover new evidence and analyze it with greater accuracy. Through his broad survey of Little Bighorn archaeology across a span of 130 years, Scott expands our understanding of the battle, its protagonists, and the enduring legacy of the battlefield as a national memorial.
