Book excerpt: In this paper, we focus on the relationship of public figures using statistical network analysis methods. Specifically, we analyze the network of Instagram following relationship of NBA All-Stars in the most recent 5 seasons. Based on Latent Space Position Modeling, we find that there might be an International "gang" and a veteran "gang" within this network although it is not so clear. Triad Census Model implies that this network is more likely to be transitive. With the help of Exponential-family Random Graph Models (ERGM), we analyze this network from 4 aspects, including Demographical Characteristics, Social Media Characteristics, Business Factor and Basketball Factor. We find strong Nationality and Team homophily effects. As for Business Factors, it does show some Brand homophily effect. Also, players who have more NBA experience, more honors and are more active on social media are more likely to form a tie with others.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we aimed to obtain a better understanding of the public and private Twitter/Xpersonas of a professional basketball team (the 2022-2023 NBA Spurs). We used the data to form a social network and utilized statistical network analysis methodology to study our data. We studied this network to understand how an average NBA team's players represent themselves to the public as opposed to studying the top teams/players in the NBA. We found that stochastic block models group the players correctly into two groups but mishandles the classification of some players due to their network structure. Analysis with Exponential- family random graph models (ERGMs) reinforce the idea that players often tend to keep their social media presence professional. Players also rated higher on an ESPN metric of performance tended to be more involved with social media.

Book excerpt: Social network analysis (SNA) allows us to quantify cooperative team sports such as basketball, and compare different passing patterns’ effects on a successful game. We analyzed games at both the college and professional level to identify common network metrics that predict a win. For both levels of competition, individual players who scored the most points per game were unlikely to also occupy the central position in their team’s network; however, we found opposite effects of out-degree centralization on college vs. professional basketball. Other factors that significantly increase chances of success at the professional level include a team’s total number of passes and level of reciprocity. These results may be used as a tool for coaching staff to improve their teams’ strategies in concrete, measurable ways, and help track the level of cooperation among their players more easily.
