Book Synopsis Wetting and Drying of Small Wood Panels by : D. C. Tibbetts
Download or read book Wetting and Drying of Small Wood Panels written by D. C. Tibbetts and published by Division of Building Research, National Research Council. This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observations of painted wood sidings on houses, and subsequent study of instrumented panels exposed to the elements suggest that much of the water associated with paint failure is due to rain. From automatic recordings of wood moisture content in the exposed panels (at one depth only), rapid increases were observed during a rain followed by what appeared to be similar rates of decreases when the rain ceased (1). Both wetting and drying of the wood were assumed to occur through the paint films In order to investigate if apparent drying rates of the exposed panels were due to moisture redistribution, a laboratory program using small panels was initiated whereby artificial but controlled methods of wetting could be observed. The program also studied the relative performances of coated and uncoated panels, the effects of prolonged period of wetting, cycling influences, water temperature and rates of uninterrupted drying under controlled conditions. The laboratory experiments initially involved the use of a rain leakage apparatus which provided a continuous film of water over the ex posed face of the panel and an air pressure approximating a 50 mph (22.37m/ sec) wind (2). During this period, when some modifications to existing apparatus were being made, it was observed that variation of the water' temperature, between 50 deg.F and 70 deg.F (10 deg. to 21.1 deg.C) appeared to have no significant influence on the wood moisture contents recorded.
