This book was released on 2013 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional three-phase AC-DC converters have two converter stages. They have a front-end converter that converts the input AC voltage into an intermediate DC bus voltage and a second, back-end converter that converts this DC bus voltage into the desired isolated DC output voltage. The front-end converter also performs power factor correction (PFC) and shapes the three-phase input currents so that they are nearly sinusoidal and in phase with the three-phase input voltages. This allows the AC power source to be used in the most efficient manner. The front-end AC-DC converter is typically implemented with six switches while the back-end DC-DC converter is typically implemented with a four switch DC-DC full-bridge topology. Power electronic researchers have been motivated to try to reduce the number of switches that are used in the conventional two-stage approach in order to reduce cost and simplify the overall AC-DC converter. There are two general approaches to doing this: This first approach is to reduce the number of switches in the front-end AC-DC converter. The second approach is to combine the AC-DC converter and the DC-DC converter in a single converter so that the overall AC-DC converter can be implemented in a single converter stage that can simultaneously perform AC-DC power conversion with PFC and DC-DC power conversion. The main focus of this thesis is on new power converter topologies that convert a three-phase AC input voltage into an isolated DC output voltage with a reduced number of switches. In the thesis, a new family of reduced switch front-end converter topologies is proposed, an example converter from this new family is selected for further study and a modified version of this topology is studied as well. In addition to these front-end converters, two new three-phase AC-DC single-stage converters are proposed and their properties and characteristics are compared. For each new converter that is investigated in detail, its modes of operation are explained, its steady-state characteristics are determined by mathematical analysis, and the results of the analysis are used to develop a design procedure that can be used to select key components. The design procedure of each new converter is demonstrated with an example that was used in the implementation of an experimental prototype that confirmed the feasibility of the converter. The thesis concludes by presenting that have been reached as a result of the work that was performed, stating its main contributions to the power electronics literature and suggesting future research that can be done based on the thesis work.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AC-DC power factor correction (PFC) single-stage converters are attractive because of their cost and their simplicity. In these converters, both PFC and power conversion are done at the same time using a single converter that regulates the output. Since they have only a single controller, these converters operate with an intermediate transformer primary-side DC bus voltage that is unregulated and is dependent on the converters' operating conditions and component values. This means that the DC bus voltage can vary significantly as line and load conditions are changed. Such a variable DC bus voltage makes it difficult to optimally design the converter transformer as well as the DC bus capacitor. One previously proposed single-stage AC-DC converter, the Single-Stage Buck-Boost Direct Energy Transfer (SSBBDET) converter has a clamping mechanism that can clamp the DC bus voltage to a pre-set limit. The clamping mechanism, however, superimposes a low frequency 120 Hz AC component on the output DC voltage so that some means must be taken to reduce this component. These means, however, make the converter transient slow and sluggish. The main objective of this thesis is to minimize the 120 Hz output ripple component and to improve the dynamic response of the SSBBDET converter by using a new control scheme. In the thesis, the operation of the SSBBDET converter is reviewed and the proposed control method is introduced and explained in detail. Key design considerations for the design of the converter controller are discussed and the converter's ability to operate with fixed DC bus voltage, low output ripple and fast dynamic response is confirmed with experimental results obtained from a prototype converter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of single-phase line-interfaced power converters in electrical power systems is rapidly growing due to the changing nature and power quality requirements of electrical loads. Most applications require these single-phase line-interfaced power converters to be compact and efficient, and depending on application meet additional performance, cost, and reliability targets. This thesis presents innovative system architectures, circuit topologies, design methodologies, and control strategies for highly compact and efficient single-phase ac-dc and ac-ac line-interfaced power converters. First, a comprehensive design methodology for step-down isolated two-stage ac-dc converters is presented which compares various designs and operating modes and selects the optimal design based on overall volume and efficiency. Additionally, a new control strategy is presented for a compact front-end soft-switched power-factor correction (PFC) stage to ensure compliance with strict electromagnetic interference (EMI) regulations. A 1-kW universal-input to 28 V-output isolated ac-dc prototype converter is built to showcase performance benefits of proposed design and control strategies. This prototype achieves a high-power-density of 84W/in3 and maintains greater than 93% efficiency across a wide output power range. Next, the functionality of the proposed ac-dc converter is further enhanced by incorporating a new droop control strategy for parallel operation of multiple similar ac-dc converter modules. The proposed control strategy uses the input current of the secondary dc-dc stage of two-stage ac-dc converters in conjunction with variable droop resistance to achieve near-perfect parallel operation. A multi-module ac-dc conversion system is built to validate the proposed droop control strategy. The parallel modules achieve a current distribution error of less than 2% near their maximum output power. Multiple ac-ac conversion applications are also addressed in this thesis. For highly cost-sensitive applications, two compact and efficient single-stage ac-ac converters are presented which utilize a comprehensive design methodology centered around minimizing the total cost of components. Moreover, innovative control strategies are presented for both ac-ac converters to enable output voltage regulation under input voltage and output load fluctuations. Both single-stage ac-ac prototype converters, utilizing the proposed design and control strategies, are built and tested. The 600-W 480 Vrms to 264 Vrms prototypes achieve power densities exceeding 40W/in3 while maintaining conversion efficiencies of greater than 96% across majority of the output load. Finally, a much more feature-rich ac-dc-ac converter is also proposed for advanced ac-ac conversion applications, such as data center online uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). The proposed transformer-less two-stage ac-ac converter is based on a new circuit topology which can operate at high switching frequencies (up to several MHz) and utilize 50% lower dc-bus capacitance than conventional split-dc-bus topologies. A 1-k VA 120 Vrms prototype ac-dc-ac converter is built and extensively tested to showcase performance improvements. This prototype achieves high peak conversion efficiency of greater than 95% and high power density of 26.4W/in3 while utilizing long-life but relatively bulky film dc-bus capacitors.

Book excerpt: This thesis proposes a three-level DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter and its extension to single-phase, single-stage, three-level AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The AC-to-DC converter integrates a three-level boost converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and a three-level half-bridge DC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter. The steady-state operation of the DC-to-DC converter and AC-to-DC converter with capacitive output filter are studied with phase-shifted gating scheme. The three-level topology reduces the voltage rating of the switches to half of the input voltage. Soft-switching is achieved for switches at different load and input voltage conditions. Boost section of the AC-to-DC converter achieves automatic power factor correction (PFC). At reduced load and higher input voltage conditions, the line current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) increases with phase-shifted gating scheme. The THD has been reduced by using a complementary PWM gating control in the AC-to-DC converter.
