Book excerpt: This book offers new insights into the Memorial of Moses on Mount Nebo, one of the most renowned coenobitic monasteries in the Byzantine period in Arabia. Between 2012 and 2014, the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum carried out new archaeological investigations in the southern wing of the monastery and in the church. The excavation in the central nave unearthed an empty tomb adorned with alabaster marble, placed on the highest point of the mountain. Starting from the archaeological data, the author critically reflects on the architectural phases of the basilica, how the monastery was run and its daily life. Special attention is also given to pilgrimages to the monastic shrines beyond the River Jordan and their progressive abandonment.

Book excerpt: "Although much has been written about the Ark of the Covenant, few authors engage the wealth of information available that pertains to Egyptian material culture. [This] is the first book to explore the complex history of sacred ritual furniture in Egypt that predated the ark by hundreds of years. Within Egyptian culture, over four hundred examples of ritual furniture exist that shed light on the design and appearance of the ark. These examples form patterns that provide context for the Israelites' understanding of the ark at the time of its construction. That understanding would have been obvious to the Israelites of the time, but has since become obscured over the millennia. This groundbreaking book is the first to connect the Ark of the Covenant with the archaeology and chronology of ancient Egypt"--

Fully illustrated with compelling color and black-and-white photographs, the book takes us from Myanmar to Peru's and Egypt's unexplained “landing strips.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century philologist and Biblical critic William Robertson Smith famously concluded that the sacred status of holy places derives not from their intrinsic nature but from their social character. Building upon this insight, Mecca and Eden uses Islamic exegetical and legal texts to analyze the rituals and objects associated with the sanctuary at Mecca. Integrating Islamic examples into the comparative study of religion, Brannon Wheeler shows how the treatment of rituals, relics, and territory is related to the more general mythological depiction of the origins of Islamic civilization. Along the way, Wheeler considers the contrast between Mecca and Eden in Muslim rituals, the dispersal and collection of relics of the prophet Muhammad, their relationship to the sanctuary at Mecca, and long tombs associated with the gigantic size of certain prophets mentioned in the Quran. Mecca and Eden succeeds, as few books have done, in making Islamic sources available to the broader study of religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expression the “face of God” is a familiar one to Bible scholars and its meaning has long been a point of disagreement, especially in its use with the verb “to see”. While some scholars dismissed the expression as merely a metaphor with little significance, others have compared it to the ‘face’ of gods and goddesses of the ANE religious context, where worshippers sought an audience with their ‘divine’ king. Scrutinising previous scholarship and based on careful exegesis of several crucial passages in the Pentateuch, this publication presents the motif ”seeing the face of God” in an entirely new context of divine self-revelation.

Book excerpt: New York Times–bestselling author Garry Wills provides a provocative analysis of the theological and historical basis for the priesthood In a riveting and provocative tour de force from the author of What Jesus Meant, Pulitzer Prize winner Garry Wills poses the challenging question: Why did the priesthood develop in a religion that began without it and, indeed, was opposed to it? Why Priests? argues brilliantly and persuasively for a radical re-envisioning of the role of the church as the Body of Christ and for a new and better understanding of the very basis of Christian belief. As Wills emphasizes, the stakes for the writer and the church are high, for without the priesthood there would be no belief in an apostolic succession, the real presence in the Eucharist, the sacrificial interpretation of the Mass, and the ransom theory of redemption. This superb study of the origins of the priesthood stands as Wills’s towering achievement and will be of interest to all inquiring minds, believers and non-believers alike.

Book excerpt: Was the Universe created in 4004 BC? Was Jesus of Nazareth secretly married to Mary Magdalene? Were Jesus, Mary Magdalene, their son, and the Virgin Mary all laid to rest in a 'Lost Jesus Tomb?' Was the New Testament written by ignorant fishermen who lived long after Jesus and never knew Him? In this work, Dr. DuPraw provides a critical refutation of these and other absurd fictions recently published about Jesus Christ, often with the implication that they might be, or really are true. In separate chapters, the author summarizes scientific facts about the rise of the dinosaurs 230 million years ago, their sudden extinction 65 million years ago, and the appearance of Homo sapiens 195 thousand years ago; he describes how little is known about the origin of life on Earth or anywhere else; and he proposes a useful concept called 'adaptive modification of species' or 'intelligent evolution.'
