Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the World This short history OF the world is meant to be read straight forwardly almost as a novel is read. It gives in the most general way an account of our present knowledge of history, shorn of elabora tions and complications. It has been amply illustrated and every thing has been done to make it vivid and clear. From it the reader should be able to get that general View of history which is so neces sary a framework for the study of a particular period or the history of a particular country. It may be found useful as a preparatory excursion before the reading of the author's much fuller and more explicit Outline of History is undertaken. But its especial end is to meet the needs of the busy general reader, too driven to study the maps and time charts of that Outline in detail, Who Wishes to refresh and repair his faded or fragmentary conceptions of the great adventure of mankind. It is not an abstract or condensation of that former work. Within its aim the Outline admits of no further. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Larned's History of the World, Vol. 1 TO do so is to Obtain the real teaching of History, - to find its meanings, -to draw its les sons, - to enjoy it with the deepest interest it can awaken in our minds. Not to do so is either to miss everything in it worth reading or else to get no more than the entertainment that the gossip of a newspaper may give. Events that are dealt with like unstrung beads, - broken, that is, from the relations that thread them, and thrown in mere handfuls together, - may have some fragmentary, anecdotal interest in themselves, but they are not History. Not a little, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Italy (476-1900) This volume is a mere sketch in outline; it makes no pretence to original investigation, or even to an extended examination of the voluminous literature which deals with every part of its subject. It is an attempt to give a correct impression of Italian history as a whole, and employs details only here and there, and then merely for the sake of giving greater clearness to the general outline. So brief a narrative is mainly a work of selection; and perhaps no two persons would agree upon what to put in and what to leave out. I have laid emphasis upon the matters of greatest general interest, the Papacy, the Renaissance, and the Risorgimento; and my special object has been to put in high relief those achieve ments which make Italy so charming and so interest ing to the world, and to give what space was possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World History The scope, character, and purpose of this textbook perhaps require some clarification here. It covers the entire historic field, together with a chapter on prehistoric times; it presents a survey of human progress, rather than a chronological outline of events; it is intended for that large body of students who, for various reasons, do not take more than one year of history in the high school. They ought to gain from such a course, however brief, some conception of social development and some realization Of man's upward march from the Stone Age until the present time. Nothing but general or universal history will give them that conception, that realization. And only a history of the world will enable them to appreciate the contributions made by peoples widely separated in space and time to what is steadily becoming the common civilization of mankind. About two thirds of the book are devoted to the last three centuries. This period furnishes the immediate historical background Of the life of to-day: it is therefore the period ordinarily most interesting and profitable to the student. The chapters dealing with it are reproduced, with some abbrevia tion, from my Modern European History. The other chapters are based on my Early European History, but they contain much that is new, both in the text and also by way of maps and illustrations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before has such a serious subject been written about with such elegance, wit and humor. Jihad: A Short History is entertaining popular history in strict chronological order enlivened throughout with wordplay, comedy, graphic detail and vivid anecdotes on leading figures. It describes Islam’s 1,000-year assault on the rest of humanity, leading up to the concluding chapter where military jihad has been abandoned in favor of hijra, migration. It synthesizes in a single readable comprehensive volume the records of the contemporary chroniclers and the works of later historians, which mostly treat some tiny aspect of this enormous subject. None of them led the author to question the main thrust of his narrative. An understanding of the constant invasions of Christian Europe by the forces of Islam over a thousand years is vital to properly make sense of the world in which we now live. The centerpiece of Jihad: A Short History, both figuratively and literally, is the defining 1453 siege and fall of Constantinople, which is described in detail and at length in order to convey the horror of such assaults. Few westerners know of the catastrophic Battle of Mohács, one of the greatest military encounters in the history of central Europe; or of the Battle of Didgori, in which a staggering 200,000 men perished in a single day of fighting; and that the Muslims twice reached Vienna and in 1543 besieged and plundered Nice. Jihad: A Short History concisely tells of these forgotten events, and of many more epic confrontations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Great World War AT first sight this short history may seem a superfluous addition to the literature of the War. Several exhaustive histories, written by competent authorities, have appeared in numerous parts and volumes, and there are many smaller works dealing with special phases of the war. But there are thousands of people who have not had the time or the opportunity to read these works, many of Whom will, perhaps, be glad to have the record of the whole war in a handy form at a moderate price. It may also appeal to repatriated prisoners of war who were only able to follow the course of events through enemy versions, and would like to devote a few hours to reading the complete story. Lastly, there is no doubt that the history and lessons of the Great War will be taught in the schools and colleges of the British Empire, and it is hoped teachers may find this book useful either as a class-book for their pupils or a foundation for their own teaching. Book excerpt: Every human is born with multifarious potential. Why, then, do parents, schools and employers insist that we restrict our many talents and interests; that we 'specialise' in just one? We've been sold a myth, that to 'specialise' is the only way to pursue truth, identity, or even a livelihood. Yet specialisation is nothing but an outdated system that fosters ignorance, exploitation and disillusionment and thwarts creativity, opportunity and progress. Following a series of exchanges with the world’s greatest historians, futurists, philosophers and scientists, Waqas Ahmed has weaved together a narrative of history and a vision for the future that seeks to disrupt this prevailing system of unwarranted ‘hyper-specialisation.’ In The Polymath, Waqas shows us that there is another way of thinking and being. Through an approach that is both philosophical and practical, he sets out a cognitive journey towards reclaiming your innate polymathic state. Going further, he proposes nothing less than a cultural revolution in our education and professional structures, whereby everyone is encouraged to express themselves in multiple ways and fulfil their many-sided potential. Not only does this enhance individual fulfilment, but in doing so, facilitates a conscious and creative society that is both highly motivated and well equipped to address the complexity of 21st century challenges.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Germany The mighty Teutonic Or German race in Europe did not begin to play its part in history until the decline of the Roman Empire; but we must all of us feel the warm est interest in it when it does begin, for it represents not only the central history of Europe in the Middle Ages, but also the rise of our own forefathers in their home and birthplace of Germany. To understand something of these ancestors, we must go back to the Origin of Races in the earliest known history of the World. The Caucasian Race was divided into three branches: Caucasian I., The Aryan, or Indo European; II. T he Semitic; III., Race The Hamitic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English People, Vol. 1 The story of how the Short History of the English People came to be written would be the story of Mr. Green's life, from the time when his boyish interest was first awakened by the world beyond himself until his work was done. So closely are the work and the worker bound together that nu less the biography be fully written no real account of the growth of the book can indeed be given. But in issuing a Revised Edition of the History, a slight sketch of the his torical progress of the writer's mind, and of the gradual way in which the plan of his work grew up, may not seem out of place.
