Excerpt: ...owing to his mental trouble which had manifested itself very markedly. Ludwig was filled with mortification and despondency over the tremendous ovation given to Frederick by the people of his own capital. The Crown Prince had covered himself with heroism and glory; he was a martial hero, a "man of Iron and War," excelling in physical courage and well equipped to awaken the enthusiasm of the emotional crowds. Poor Ludwig, who had ever shown a lack of courage, fled to his castle of Berg on the very morning of the big military banquet given in the conqueror's honor. He was torn with fear that Frederick, in the event of another war, would threaten the independence of Bavaria, and seize from him his crown. But in this direction his fears and jealousy of Frederick were unfounded, although the latter's manner was anything but cordial and full of an overbearing ungraciousness and arrogance. By this condescension of manner Ludwig read that he only looked upon him as half a king. His ever alert sensitiveness was deeply wounded, and after the first reviewing of his troops by the Crown Prince after the war, he never came into Munich to receive his royal visitor. Concerning this period Frederick wrote a diary, containing many interesting and also very personal details. It was published in 1881, but suppressed by the order of Bismarck. The great Franco-Prussian war of 1870--1871 did more to unite the disunited states of Germany jind to draw them together in a union at least of political friendship if not of national love. At least the great dislike between the North and the South externally gave way. All the miseries of Germany, the petty quarrels, the terrible wars, the awful bloodshed and sieges were due, as indeed are they not ever, in all...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Bavaria There have been innumerable scholarly and scientific histories written on Bavaria, in German, and several excellent works on various phases of her remarkable history, and of the vivid personalities which so invade her past, in English. The guide books which are to be found in all her more important towns and cities are very adequate, although of necessity much has to be left untold, owing to their size, and concentrated as they chiefly are on the one place in question. For instance Mr. Headlam's "Nuremberg," a truly significant and exquisite little work, and Miss Frances Gerard's Romance of Ludwig II." (although the latter does contain several interesting details of the unfortunate Monarch's Kingdom, apart from Munich and the curious castles which he built). There are various other works, too, dealing with the stories of Bayreuth, Oberammergau, Munich &c.;but a want has been expressed for a small work which would contain as it were, and concentrate into a small edition, outlines of all these various subjects and places. Book excerpt: "In 1949 Bavaria was the most industrially backward and politically conservative region of Germany, governed by the Christian Social union (CSU), a reactionary regional party. Between 1949 and 1969 Franz Josef Strauβ, the leader of the CSU's small liberal wing, became the party's leader and the most colorful and polarizing politician in Germany. Breaking with the agrarian traditions of Bavarian Catholic politics, Strauβ turned to industry and created policies and tactics that took advantage of Bavaria's and the CSU's circumstances as well as events in German, European, and NATO politics in ways that benefited his industrial clients, himself, and CSU, and Bavaria. By 1969 Strauβ and the CSU had made Bavaria the center of Germany's aerospace and defense industries, a center of scientific research, and solved its energy crisis. this transformed the CSU, making it the most successful Christian-Democratic party in postwar Europe; transformed Bavaria, modernizing its industry and reconciling Bavarian society with modernity; and transformed Germany, shifting its enter of gravity farther south than it had been in hundreds of years." -- BACK COVER.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating history of Isabeau of Bavaria is a tale of two queens. During her lifetime, Isabeau, the long-suffering wife of mad King Charles VI of France, was respected and revered. After her death, she was reviled as an incompetent regent, depraved adulteress, and betrayer of the throne. Asserting that there is no historical support for this posthumous reputation, Tracy Adams returns Isabeau to her rightful place in history. Adulteress and traitor—two charges long leveled against the queen—are the first subjects of Adam’s reinterpretation of medieval French history. Scholars have concluded that the myths of Isabeau’s scandalous past are just that: rumors that evolved after her death in the context of a political power struggle. Unfortunately, this has not prevented the lies from finding their way into respected studies on the period. Adams’s own work serves as a corrective, rehabilitating the reputation of the good queen and exploring the larger topic of memory and the creation of myth. Adams next challenges the general perception that the queen lacked political acumen. With her husband incapacitated by insanity, Isabeau was forced to rule a country ripped apart by feuding, power-hungry factions. Adams argues that Isabeau handled her role astutely in such a contentious environment, preserving the monarchy from the incursions of the king’s powerful male relatives. Taking issue with history’s harsh treatment of a woman who ruled under difficult circumstances, Adams convincingly recasts Isabeau as a respected and competent queen.

Book excerpt: Bavaria was a very important country during the early Middle Ages. Its territory included much of the modern German state but also reached across the Alps into what are now Austria and northern Italy.Bavaria thus occupied a strategic position between the rival kingdoms of the Franks and the Langobards. It was ruled by powerful dukes who had close political and personal relations with the Frankish rulers but who also vigorously resisted attempts to limit their own sovereignty.Bavaria's independence was ended in 788 by Charlemagne who deposed his cousin, Duke Tassilo.Charlemagne's son, the Emperor Louis the Pious, then established Bavaria as the first monarchy east of the river Rhine for his own son, Ludwig the German. This is the first full study of the entire evolution of Bavarian rule from the mid-sixth century into the early ninth century It explores the changing strategies adopted by its dukes and then its first king to establish their authority and maintain their autonomy in face of evolving challenges to their rule.An Epilogue continues the story into the early tenth century. Carl I. Hammer graduated from Amherst College (B.A.) and the University of Toronto (Ph.D.) and also studied at the universities of Munich, Chicago and Oxford. After a career in international business with Westinghouse and Daimler-Benz, he is now retired. He has published two other scholarly books on early-medieval Bavaria and numerous articles in academic journals in N. America and Europe. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Book excerpt: Schloss is the German word for castle or palace. This book visits twenty-five beautiful schlosser (the plural of schloss) in Bavaria and tells the colourful stories of historical royal characters connected with them. The history of Bavaria is closely linked with the glamourous Wittelsbach royal family, who produced such well-known celebrities as Mad King Ludwig II. This book tells their enthralling story. It also discovers other Bavarian dynasties - which got fabulously rich from inventing the postal service; specialised in being elected as church princes; or whose smart marriage policy brought them numerous thrones... Bavaria is a beautiful part of Germany and a real joy to visit. In the days of the monarchy, Bavaria was a kaleidoscope of sovereign territories ruled by dukes, princes, and bishops. From Franconia in the north to the Alps in the south, the Bavarian countryside teems with their fascinating castles and palaces. The stories include the prince who sold his country and its people to Prussia; the princess who was expected to marry an emperor until he saw her little sister; the king of Bavaria who reigned the longest but who hardly ever appears in the history books; and the duke who has been called the Bavarian Henry VIII. The fairy-tale castles built by Ludwig II are visited by tourists from around the world, but other schlosser rarely see an English speaker. This book might encourage you to get off the beaten track and see these wonderful places yourself. Schloss in Bavaria is the author's fourth book about The Fascinating Royal History of German Castles. With over 100 illustrations and 14 family trees; it should appeal to anyone who likes history, sightseeing, or is interested in people's personal stories. The author's first three books, called Schloss, Schloss II, and Schloss III, are also available on Amazon.
