Book Synopsis A Ship Called Grace by : Douglas Berry

Book excerpt: This is a story of conflict and adventure, pitting the secular triad of money, lust, and power against the religious trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. It is a religious/historical novel that concerns the slave trade in the Eighteen-thirties with the building of a slave ship in a small, coastal village in Nova Scotia, Canada. It includes a Methodist religious revival; a stormy sea voyage by a youth in a small sailing craft, an African trek capturing slaves, a slave ship caught in the doldrums in the South Atlantic, and, later, shipwrecked in a hurricane off of the coast of Haiti, a Voodoo ceremony; the attempted destruction of the new ship; and―of course―a love story. The new ship, named Grace, is owned by a New England sea captain and his nephew, who believe they live in a state of grace in which their sins have been forgiven before they are committed (Rom. 8: 1). The youth goes to Africa with the captain after being saved in the Methodist camp meeting, and is confronted with justifying his newly found faith with the injustices he finds in the slave trade.

Book Synopsis Elizabethan Naval Administration by : C.S. Knighton
Download or read book Elizabethan Naval Administration written by C.S. Knighton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first general selection from the substantial body of surviving documents about Elizabeth’s navy. It is a companion to The Navy of Edward VI and Mary I (Vol.157 in the NRS Series), where the apparatus serving both volumes was printed, and it complements the other NRS volumes that deal specifically with the Spanish Armada. This collection concentrates (though not exclusively so) on the early years of Elizabeth’s reign when there was no formal war. From 1558-1585 the navy was involved in a number of small-scale campaigns, pursuit of pirates and occasional shows of force. The documents selected emphasize the financial and administrative processes that supported these operations, such as mustering, victualing, demobilisation, and ship maintenance and repair. The fleet varied in size from about 30 to 45 ships during the period and a vast amount of maintenance and repair was required. The main component of the volume is the massively detailed Navy Treasurer's account for 1562-3 which is followed by and collated with the corresponding Exchequer Account. The documents illustrate just how efficiently the dockyards functioned. They were one of the great early Elizabethan achievements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1967, these two volumes combine the traditions of the annalistic style with the exacting requirements of modern scholarship to provide scholars of the fifteenth century with what remains, forty years after its first publication, the most exhaustive account of the reign of Edward IV. Again, and again her intensive researches allow the author to throw new light on obscure points, or to put some casual reference in chronicles or letters into its true relation.
