I have been repeatedly applied to by Dublin Publishers to furnish them with a contraction of Locke's Essay, and have received liberal offers of pecuniary remuneration. Hitherto I have uniformly declined the undertaking, and have been only induced to enter upon the present work, by having ascertained that a spurious contraction, in a catechetical form, is in circulation under my name, sold by the booksellers as mine, and bought as such by the Students. Finding the defects of my own works sufficiently numerous, without being stigmatised with the errors of others, I have, in self defence, attempted these Lectures upon the Essay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume LI, the final volume, features 60 fascinating lectures on the wide range of knowledge the series covers-history, poetry, natural science, philosophy, biography, prose fiction, criticism and the essay, education, political science, drama, voyages and travel, and religion-that put this extraordinary survey of human knowledge in context. They are the collective capstone on a bookshelf reading course unparalleled in comprehensiveness and authority.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding I have read this Essay on Locke with both pleasure and profit. In the suggestions I have made I have confined myself entirely to verbal criticism, the subject matter I have not touched it. It is a wonder to me how a foreigner has been able to use my native English so well in the expression of abstruse ideas. Book Synopsis The Development of Anglican Moral Theology, 1680–1950 by : Peter H. Sedgwick
Download or read book The Development of Anglican Moral Theology, 1680–1950 written by Peter H. Sedgwick and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Development of Anglican Moral Theology is the successor volume to The Origins of Anglican Moral Theology. It describes how Anglican theologians interacted closely with the moral philosophers of their day while providing a pastoral resource in the fast-changing period between 1680-1950. The book shows how vibrant and intellectually rigorous the tradition was, and includes detailed studies of the sermons of Butler, Wesley and Newman, the writings of William Law and Coleridge, and the later work of Maurice, Gore, Scott Holland, Moberly, William Temple and Kirk. This is the first account of this lively tradition of moral theology.
