Download or read book The Malcontent written by John Marston and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1999-07-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malcontent, usually recognized as John Marston's masterpiece, is one of the most original and complex plays of the Elizabethan theatre. Complex in genre, structure and language, it poses interesting problems for theatre history and textual transmission. The aim of this edition is to offer answers to the various questions raised by the play (derived from the thirty-six copies now extant), to establish a reliable text, to date the play and relate it to the aesthetic cross-currents flowing at the turn of the seventeenth century. It also seeks to place The Malcontent within the theatrical traditions both of boy-players and of Shakespeare's company, which stole the play from the boys and adapted to their own theatre.
Book Synopsis The Disguised Ruler in Shakespeare and his Contemporaries by : Kevin A. Quarmby
Download or read book The Disguised Ruler in Shakespeare and his Contemporaries written by Kevin A. Quarmby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early seventeenth century, the London stage often portrayed a ruler covertly spying on his subjects. Traditionally deemed 'Jacobean disguised ruler plays', these works include Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, Marston's The Malcontent and The Fawn, Middleton's The Phoenix, and Sharpham's The Fleer. Commonly dated to the arrival of James I, these plays are typically viewed as synchronic commentaries on the Jacobean regime. Kevin A. Quarmby demonstrates that the disguised ruler motif actually evolved in the 1580s. It emerged from medieval folklore and balladry, Tudor Chronicle history and European tragicomedy. Familiar on the Elizabethan stage, these incognito rulers initially offered light-hearted, romantic entertainment, only to suffer a sinister transformation as England awaited its ageing queen's demise. The disguised royal had become a dangerously voyeuristic political entity by the time James assumed the throne. Traditional critical perspectives also disregard contemporary theatrical competition. Market demands shaped the repertories. Rivalry among playing companies guaranteed the motif's ongoing vitality. The disguised ruler's presence in a play reassured audiences; it also facilitated a subversive exploration of contemporary social and political issues. Gradually, the disguised ruler's dramatic currency faded, but the figure remained vibrant as an object of parody until the playhouses closed in the 1640s.

Book Synopsis Constructing Monsters in Shakespeare's Drama and Early Modern Culture by : Mark Thornton Burnett
Download or read book Constructing Monsters in Shakespeare's Drama and Early Modern Culture written by Mark Thornton Burnett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-10-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructing 'Monsters' in Shakespearean Drama and Early Modern Culture argues for the crucial place of the 'monster' in the early modern imagination. Burnett traces the metaphorical significance of 'monstrous' forms across a range of early modern exhibition spaces - fairground displays, 'cabinets of curiosity' and court entertainments - to contend that the 'monster' finds its most intriguing manifestation in the investments and practices of contemporary theatre. The study's new readings of Shakespeare, Marlowe and Jonson make a powerful case for the drama's contribution to debates about the 'extraordinary body'.
Book Synopsis The Selected Plays of John Ford by : John Ford
Download or read book The Selected Plays of John Ford written by John Ford and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1986-08-29 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection contains the three finest plays of the Stuart dramatist John Ford. The Broken Heart is a classical tragedy of suffering; 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, Ford's best-known play and one still frequently performed, is a tragic story of limitless ambition and social rivalry expressed in sexual terms; Perkin Warbeck is the last great successor to the history plays of Shakespeare. Together they exemplify the unique tone of Ford's drama, in which passion and gravity are united by a playwright with a poetic sense of theatre. This is the only one-volume selection of Ford's plays now available. The texts are modernised and equipped with notes explaining unfamiliar language and historical references. A general introduction gives a brief biography and bibliography; individual introductions deal with the sources and stage history of each play. Longer notes at the back of the book discuss points of staging and interpretation, and there is a full textual apparatus which makes this edition useful for the scholar as well as the student.
