Book excerpt: When she comes into view, I'm awestruck. In this moment, sitting at a grand piano, she's never looked more alive. My name is Melody Peters and I'm dead. Gosh, that sounds dramatic doesn't it - except I guess you don't get more dramatic than dead. I have been awhile now. I've gotten used to it. I'm well past the acceptance stage. I died when I was sixteen. A car crash. A drunk driver, I think. I'd been on my way home from boarding school with my best friend Abby. But then I'd died. I don't think I was ready to die. I had too many things left to do. Fuck, I hadn't even written a bucket list yet. The one thing I had done? I'd fallen in love. His name was Zach. Zach Mulligan. He wasn't my first boyfriend. Hell, he wasn't even the first boy my big brother caught trying to climb out my bedroom window. Although, he was only the second. I wasn't a complete slag. But he was the first and only boy I ever fell in love with. A Secret Melody is a Rules Series Bonus Story from USA Today Bestselling Author, Hanleigh Bradley. "I really loved Melody and Zach’s story. Book Synopsis Arabic as a Secret Song by : Leïla Sebbar
Download or read book Arabic as a Secret Song written by Leïla Sebbar and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The celebrated and highly versatile writer Leïla Sebbar was born in French colonial Algeria but has lived nearly her entire adult life in France, where she is recognized as a major voice on the penetrating effects of colonialism in contemporary society. The dramatic contrast between her past and present is the subject of the nine autobiographical essays collected in this volume. Written between 1978 and 2006, they trace a journey that began in Aflou, Algeria, where her father ran a schoolhouse, and continued to France, where Sebbar traveled, alone, as a graduate student before eventually realizing her powerful creative vision. The pieces collected in this book capture an array of experiences, sensations, and sentiments surrounding the French colonial presence in Algeria and offer an intimate and prismatic reflection on Sebbar’s bicultural upbringing as the child of an Algerian father and French mother. Sebbar paints an unflinching portrait of her original disconnection from her father’s Arabic language and culture, depicting her struggle to revive a cultural heritage that her family had deliberately obscured and to convey the vibrant yet muted Arabic of her father and of Algeria. Looking back from numerous vantage points throughout her life, she presents the complicated and divisive dynamics of being raised "between two shores"--the colonized and the colonizer. Book Synopsis Writing and Renunciation in Medieval Japan by : Rajyashree Pandey
Download or read book Writing and Renunciation in Medieval Japan written by Rajyashree Pandey and published by U of M Center For Japanese Studies. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph-length study in English of Kamo no Chomei, one of the most important literary figures of medieval Japan. Drawing upon a wide range of writings in a variety of genres from the Heian and Kamakura periods, Pandey focuses on the terms kyogen kigo (wild words and fancy phrases), shoji soku nehan (samsara is nirvana), hoben (expedient means), and suki (single-minded devotion to an art). She shows how these terms deployed by writers in an attempt to reconcile literary and artistic activities with a commitment to Buddhism. By locating Chomei within this broad context, the book offers an original reading of his texts, while at the same time casting a light upon intellectual preoccupations that were central to the times. Writing and Renunciation in Medieval Japan is an important contribution to a growing body of work that challenges the rigid distinction between the religious and literary—a distinction that would have made little sense to medieval writers, many of whom were poets as well as priests—and sheds light on the particular ways in which a religio-aesthetic tradition came to be articulated in medieval Japan. Through an examination of records left by Chomei's contemporaries, the book also traces the life of Chomei, particularly his activities as a court poet and the circumstances that led to his taking the tonsure.
